To the one that said that there was no love involved in the King's-Hong Lim's relationship, I think there was. Only that the King loved the other and the other just felt affection towards the King. That's why he fell inlove with the queen, not because he was enslaved because during the movie you can see clearly that Hong Lim truly cared for the King.
Amazing film. I think Hong Lim's and the Queen love is real not of 'lust' because Hong Lim has never experienced "Real" love with a woman before so he doesn't know what love is. He also risked his own life to get revenge on the King and even confessed he love the queen. If that's not love what is love?
I personally think his whole rage came from the fact that; A: He was castrated B: He thought the King killed his friends and the Queen (so his friends were just as important) Like you said, he had never been with a woman before, therefore the sex got addictive (if you notice they kept having sexual intercourse even when ordered not to, this symbolises the strength of his lust, there was no romance between the two). Lust and Love are two very similar feelings. In the end when he realises the King never killed the Queen (which may also mean that his friends are alive also) he turns his head away from the Queen and dies looking at the King... I think that's a big hint.
i know all start when the king ask hiim to comfort the queen but I hate when gay to straight -_- well , just wanna say . i am fujiyoshi btw .. when I watch the ending , i hope that chief will die but if the king die then chief too . AND IT IS HAPPENED
riaa dilo yes. regret that he didn't fully understand the king even though being with him for 10 years, regret to have said he didn't love him for even once. But the head turning and the tears say it all that he realised he actually loves him.
riaa dilo if it was the intention of the director like you said, there wouldn't be the last scene of HL memorizing about the past when he said he would live with the king for life, and the scene where he and the king riding horses like the dream that never came true of the king. And remember earlier, when HL realised he had feelings for the queen, he hugged the king and cried when sleeping with him. I thought that HL loved the queen but the entire 10 minutes ending scene changed it for me. It was clearly that HL loved the king more.
There is no unbiased reading/interpretation of a movie like this one. Just like there is no universal love. Different people love differently, according to their personalities, circumstances and limitations. You have your own bias, I have mine. I think they both loved Hong Lim and that Hong Lim, too, loved them both. I understand your point, but I am afraid we will have to agree to disagree - and leave it at that.
It's interesting how the songs are used... Gasiri (I think) fits the character of the King much better - while Ssanghwajeom corresponds pretty nicely with the affair between Hong Lim and Queen.
The songs' name is Gashiri. I suppose it is an old korean folk song. I have been desperately seraching for the song alone, but no luck. Once i find i will post back info.
I do not find the fact that the song is sung by a woman that important. As far as I know, the lyrical subject in Ssanghwajeom is also supposed to be female. King might not be able to understand romantic love *for a woman*, but he knows romantic love *as such*. If I remember correctly, there is a scene later, where King plays that song, alone - at a time when he already more or less understands, that he¨s losing his lover. In that scene, he seems to be a lot more aware of what the song is about.
Hong Lim may very well be the frozen flower, but that doesn't make King's love and loneliness any less true or less real. While it turns out to be a rather selfish kind of love towards the end, it's still genuine enough. And up to a certain point rather forgiving, too. Both songs in a way correspond with both relationships - all the central protagonists are in one way or another very lonely people and both relationships reek of scandal. But ultimately, not-being-able-to-let-go is King's theme.
I love this song. the great song for a romantic film. the song talk About the feelling of women when she has a leaving lover. In Sung 's so talent. Miss him so much.
@mistymountain007 hi! Did you find the song somewhere? I just saw the movie and i like it a lot! I'm impressed and touched by this song but neighter can i find it anywhere! Hope you did... wishing you the best!
I liked this movie. To me it shows why we have to address pedophilia as a crime; and not let people who are wealthy and powerful get away with it. Hong is conflicted because the king took advantage of his innocence as a boy. Intimacy should be between consenting adults.

then how could we explain his last glimpse at the king before he died? When he realizes the king didn't kill the queen for real?
