The fact that the lady of the dunes was identified via her son’s DNA test is depressing as hell. Imagine having your mother randomly disappear and your father never talking about her again. You just think she abandoned your family, not knowing what happened to her.
I hope the guy has some peace knowing where his mom went, even if they’ll never truly know what happened.

To me what’s crazy about people who die, like the boy and the box and the girl on the dunes, is that people never gave up to solve the mystery. Bless those people who didn’t give up, kept going back to those mysterious cases and worked hard to find an answer
Well obviously plenty of people gave up, or they wouldn't be considered "unsolved", but I suppose you meant "different people kept trying to solve the mystery". Just semantics... 👍

The best part about the Somerton Man/Charles Webb story, that you didn't mention, was the love story between Professor Derek Abbott (who was searching for the answer to Charles Webb's identity) and Rachel Egan, who was originally suspected of being the Somerton Man's daughter. The two met while Abbott was researching the case, tried to match Rachel's DNA to the Somerton Man and the two slowly fell in love. In the end, Rachel's DNA didn't match, but even despite that, the two had found each other, married and now have three children together 💜
Y'all should search them up, it's the sweetest story.

I feel so bad for the guy who did the ancestry test to find his biological mother, only to learn she had been brutally murdered years ago. And she had in fact attempted to reach him in 1972, but he was in hospital for 18 days recovering from an overdose. At 64 he learned all of this, poor guy, and he was expecting good news when people got in contact with him regarding his DNA.
And all because of some bluebeard or serial killer with a thing for killing spouses / family.
Perhaps this poor woman somehow suspected he killed his family and he killer her so she wouldn't go to the police.
Shame he didn't get much jail time. Well, there's always Hell.
Ryan and Shane are literally the two People who carried Buzzfeed. Ryan Narrating and Shane just saying quips is iconic to anyone who has watched Their Unsolved series and it literally makes you rewatch it again. Sad that the two won’t be doing it anymore

He drowned by accident as his mother wasnt looking after him or she accidently drowned him. Then she panicked and hid the body in the box. His sister has already come out with everything this video failed to mention it…. Same with earnhart. There is a pic of the aircrafts gear leg stuck in the reef just before it drops off. The plane is down there just very hard to find…

Exactly. I believe because of their show, it renewed some sort of interest into the cases, which led to them being solved, or at least, partially solved, today.
They covered very popular whodunnits, using research done by people who were actually trying to solve it. It's just entertainment

They are great, the show was great and true crime stuff does help solve cases sometimes but I think most credit is owed to the people that had already been investigating these cases for DECADES and never gave up. The show renewed public interest, yes, but really the only direct connection to solving anything was the treasure hunt case where the guy was a former buzzfeed employee.
@@nqk_0662 It kicked up dust for younger audiences maybe, and gained popularity for some of these cases but also many of these were cold cases that were already being worked on. I don't think their videos had any impact on the likelihood of these cases being solved

They made stuff that you can rewatch every year, they're amazing, no doubting that.

Off the back of this video, I'm actually out. I can't deal with them. It sounds like an extra fact of the current story and then suddenly the people have changed. Give each item a breather dammit! Not watching any SV2 for a while, will see if there's any change in a few months.

It’s insane to me how even after several decades, cold cases can suddenly be solved by strangers with a passion to figure out the truth, it’s incredible and admirable what they do. There really is a strong chance in figuring out long forgotten things so long as you have enough hope and determination.
They have also pretty much solved the case of Elisa Lam, the creepy elevator girl who was found in the water tank of the Cecil Hotel. She cold-Turkeyed her bipolar meds and became paranoid that someone was following her. She climbed up the fire escape, hid in the water tank, couldn’t get back out, and drowned.
That was already solved. It was the internet that hyped it up to be something else.
Everyone knows that, that's not the part that's confusing or debated, that's has been information we've had for forever, it is HOW she got into the tank, she physically couldn't get in there even if she was on meds or not. You can't just chalk that up to an accident or a suicide.

The words you chose to use to describe Eliza's case are very insensitive. Give some respect to the deceased.
The Somerton/"Tamam Shud" Man case always bothered me since it was widely believed he took his own life, especially since nobody knew who he was let alone claimed his body. Knowing now that Mr. Webb almost certainly did take his life after years of loneliness just breaks my heart even more. Like with little baby Joseph though, at least he can now have a name on his gravestone. I hope he's at peace now and free of the anguish he suffered here on Earth. Poor fellow.

What's the relevance behind "Tamam Shud" however? Mister Webb went through lengths to remove the tags from his clothing, leaving behind no wallet, keys or other personal belongings save for a cryptic, Persian sentence hidden in his clothing.

For people that want more unsolved supernatural and true crime actually Shane and Ryan is making a similar show call Ghost Files for supernatural and Mystery Files for true crime in their new channel Watcher. But Mystery Files is not out yet, it'll be out in May. Hope this help.
The fact that Joseph Zarelli was identified really makes me cry of happiness. I remember finding out and just bursting into tears which is stupid because I didn't know him, but I was just so happy for this boy that he can rest with his own identity again.

Me too. This case has stuck with me and haunted me for years. It's one of the saddest child murders in the history of the US.
I hope the investigators continue to look into the case. Even if the perpetrator is deceased, he/she needs to live in infamy.

I have to say we are so lucky to live in a time period where we are finally getting answers to these long unsolved cases. Cases I never thought could be solved finally getting solved in my lifetime is amazing. The boy in the box always bothered me and although we do not have an identity of the killer we are very close to answers and finally can give the poor boy a name.
Crazy to think how far we have come in such little time. 48 years for the lady of the dunes, and yet 3 years after hearing about it , we know Ruth's identity. 10 years for Fenns treasure, 65 for poor Joseph, and yet so soon after hearing about it, our technology finally lets us put these old mysteries to rest.

When I heard Joseph's name I broke out in tears. After so long we finally know who he is. His family knows who he is, that he existed. I've been following this case since I was 16 and to hear his name now 7 years later is almost surreal
I’m glad they were finally able to identify Joseph after so long. Now if only we could know what led to him being dumped in the box, but knowing the boy has a name is a small comfort

@@Nobody_Cares_my_love I remember recently watching a The Lore Lodge video “discovering” the killer, I put quotations because he states that it is very likely, that despite the damming evidence, public documents and a statement from a women named M, that these suspects are not the killers and he stated that he did not want to slander these peoples names despite them being dead. He also said that until the police states something, these are just accusations/theories. Regardless watch that video as it’s a pretty good watch.

It's oddly comforting how someone re-drew the Boy In The Box's infamous profile sketch to resemble a happy, living child, so that he's no longer the ghastly dead face that people have pondered for decades.
Ryan’s crucial error was thinking Fenn would want to be able to live close to and physically monitor the treasure hunt. In all likelihood he would have several ways of monitoring the box and the area around it without physically being there, and Fenn also seemingly had deeper emotional connections to specific places in Wyoming than to New Mexico.
And this point’s just my personal opinion but Wyoming has a way stronger “Indiana Jones-esque multi-millionaire treasure hunt Wild West action-adventure” vibe than New Mexico does

How they found out about the identity of "the lady of the dunes" is truly fascinating. So, the son on Stephen King, was watching the summer classic movie "Jaw" and in one of the opening scenes there was a lady seen in the background of the actual movie. And he just happened to have noticed that. He was pretty sure that the lady was the victim because it matched her face drawings released by the police and she was also wearing the same bandana which was found near her dead body. It's so horrifying to think that the movie Jaw actually contains a murder victim's last seen footage ever...

@khusydimgus Jaws was filmed in Martha's vineyard which is about 100 miles away from Provincetown. It was the 1970's and blue jeans and bandanas were an incredibly popular look. There's no evidence showing that they were wearing the exact same bandana (it is only ever described as blue). They've also established that the scene the extra is seen in was filmed May 25 two months before her body was found. Is it possible? Yes. Is it far fetch? Yes. Stephen Kings son had just been reading a cold case solving book and has said that might have impacted his thought process (the footage shows a brunette with popular clothing and nothing identifiable it's a stretch to say she looks like Ruth). It's better to go at these hypothetical situations as a possibility and not as a true fact. Especially when it involves the death of someone who still has living family that have openly talked about how much they miss her.
I hope Ryan and Shane do a series like this again on Watcher. With how popular they are, it can really help unsolved cases gain more traction and possible solving.

Ryan and Shane are truly legendary. But not just for their ghost hunting or unsolved cases. Puppet History is GENUINELY one of THE BEST shows on the internet. Over there you take an ever winding look at YET ANOTHER CHAPTER in the heavy, heavy book we call history.
There's also something about a genie, the devil made an appearance at some point, couple a demons, but I'm sure that won't interest people as much as the history.

The Lady of the Dunes case is really interesting. There’s a whole theory that she was an extra in Jaws. The scene was filmed not too far from where she was murdered, and the clothes she was wearing seem to be the clothes that were found at the crime scene. I’m still waiting to see if they’ll ever be able to confirm this as true or not

The zodiac killer is always “being solved” but never actually worked.
The Somerton Man case, out of all these sad cases, is possibly the most tragic to me because of what it implied happened. This seemed like such a mysterious, twisty and turny spy-novel-esque story with weird co-incidences.
But it was Occam's razor all along; a sad man went to a beach alone to end his life, and didn't want is family or anyone else to know who he was and thus what happened to him. Was he abusive to his wife? Did he cheat? Was he just maudlin and depressed, with PTSD from the war? We will never know.
Who tf are you to say he killed himself? What arr you? A psychic? Were you there? No cause of death has been given so tone it down
I’m wondering why he ripped paper out of someone else’s book. How did he know he had the book? Was it planned to remove paper from the book? Did someone else put the paper there? Hell, this is a stretch, but did the person who owned the book kill him? I don’t know.
Why would he carefully remove all tags from his clothes though? And what was the actual cause of death?

We're seriously living in the best possible time period for forensic technology, and I'm so excited to see how far such technology advances in my lifetime. The Somerton Man case blew my mind the most. I have nothing but hope for the future of forensics.
What people can do with forensic genealogy is amazing, and it's still so incredibly new.
My family has a cold case where my mom's sister was murdered in the 70's in Detroit. It's obvious who did it but the PD didn't have the funds back then to do the forensic tests. Wish I could make enough noise to draw attention to it. I've looked online and there are no digitalized records but my mom kept all the paper documentation. Since it's still a cold case the PD should have her clothes in evidence. They found DNA that wasn't hers but it didn't hold up in court.

Unsolved True Crime is a series I constantly go back to rewatch! I wish they rebranded it and brought it to Watcher! I mean they just started a new ghost hunting series on Watcher so it isn't unlikely that they'll do another True Crime series :)
Words can't express how much I appreciate Ryan and Shane. They've given us so many hours of entertainment for free, and they've been a huge part of changing the landscape for content creators. They've gotten me through some hard times and I'm sure the same is true for many others.

Somerton Man story is really sad. Imagine dying and nobody even knowing you did. His family must've been concerned about him yeah, but I guess they weren't that concerned when the news about him found dead appeared on the newspapers.
I grew up in Somerton. Would walk by that part of the beach all the time. Pretty eerie

They found the identity of the Golden State Killer a serial r@pist and killer. They used his DNA to locate a distant family member then nailed it to him. Crazy how they did it and hopefully they can locate victims of cold cases.

I really hope Ryan and Shane know about all these solved cases! It's crazy how close they got to the treasure, they just happened to pick the wrong state out of 2
these cases being solved is so insane to me, but even more insane that id never heard they were solved. the chokehold the sommerton man had on me was insane, i had loved that case (idk how to say it without sounding odd 😭). like, these cases specifically were all the ones that had such an impact on me with the strangeness surrounding it, and having an answer is so. wow. i had heard forest's treasure was found, but that was before the pictures and person who discovered it was revealed. idk man, this is just so incredible to see how years and years of mysteries are amazingly being solved in recent times
Holy shit, I had no idea they finally identified the Lady of the Dunes! That is insane, I’d heard about her years ago, read about all the efforts that’d been undertaken in finding out who she is- never thought we’d know! This is incredible!
It’s insane how I was hoping for Shane and Ryan to create a video looking back about all the cases that turned up solved. I hope they can react on your video.
PS. I remember their bit/acting after the treasure hunt where they dressed up real fancy for the recap show. Imagine, they worked hard and end up a part time colleague was able to find it

They gotta be careful, a lot of people will sue for defamation like jon bonet brother, he killed that girl for sure but he sues everyone who accuses him and there’s many more, especially if you actually accuse the wrong person on a platform that huge.

As someone from Provincetown, Mass, the fact that one of the biggest and most notorious murders in our town has been solved, is incredible to us.
I miss Unsolved so much. And yes I know that they have a new show on their own channel where they hunt for ghosts, but I really miss their true crime episodes. I go back and binge them all the time.

Another one that was "solved" was the Dyatlov Pass incident. Ironically, Shane and Ryan joked about Disney movies in that episode and it was a Disney movie that helped solve this case.

The Somerton Man was one of the nation's greatest mysteries, as the Cold War was in swing and Australia and Britain were conducting nuclear tests in South Australia, as well as missile tests, so there were a lot of spies about and so much of the evidence suggested he was trying to hide his identity. The fact that it just turned out to be a very lonely man should be a warning to everyone to not let their imaginations get carried away. I am so glad he got his name back. Rest in place, mate.

it's incredibly depressing that Joseph's entire life could've gone by in the time that it took to discover his identity. i hope whatever happened to him wasn't painful or violent, but at this point, we probably won't find out.
In the Buzzfeed video, they said that he died from blunt force trauma to the head and was beaten to death.

I'm so glad these unsolved cases are being solved and that more cases get the shine of light and finally be put to rest. I always liked Shane and Ryan's way of delivering the cases, it was clear and easy to follow. I watched their Unsolved playlist a bunch of times already and will surely rewatch it again.

Lady of the Dunes case always kept me up at night. It's so crazy how someone goes missing and nobody blinks an eye.
It blindsided me when the boy in the box case was solved. I was so overcome with relief and emotion, having grown up knowing about this case. I just pray we don’t have to wait so long for Summer Well’s case to be solved. Please everyone, look up little Summer Moon Utah Wells. She is an angel of a little girl who has vanished and has not be seen since. Super suspicious stuff within the family. Summer needs justice for whatever happened, and if she’s somewhere alive (please god), I pray she is rescued.

Years of watching these… I thank Ryan and Shane for all of it, back to the first one I watched. Interesting seeing people begin to put some pieces together/trying to. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if they’ve helped these cases and bring them to light once again.

I almost jumped when I saw the thumbnail, I religiously followed buzzfeed unsolved true crime, adored Ryan and Shane and almost remember every case even today.
Plus seeing a video about this from this guy who always manages to captivate the viewer in stories/topics they don't even know about or were interested in is insane.

the saddest part of all these cases is that the moment they were solved people lost interest in them, the unidentified people may have gotten their names back but they will most likely always be known as their aliases
This is a breakthrough and a relief for most people especially the grieving loved ones. May other cold cases be solved appropriately. Rest in peace to these people, it's very sad but very reassuring that they found peace after decades.
