The more I listen to Greg it makes me think the man is a good soul.
Meet him before he is such a nice guy
I agree I always thot he was an asshole...but as I've watched these videos of him seems like type of guy I could listen/talk to for hrs#Hammer valentine
It's refreshing to see an old wrestler that isn't carrying 50+ years of old grudges. So many of them hold onto that shit.
Back in the day his character was underhanded yet very skilled. I never really appreciated him then.
But man, Iâd love to have this man as my neighbor now.
It's funny how different some of them really are than I thought they were based on their wrestling personae.
These shoot interviews have made me a huge fan of Gregâs. Good dude.
Exactly I can watch him talk all day about wrestling.
Nothing but respect for the Hammer
Greg needs to narrate an old west documentary!
Sure when?
I hadn't thought about that but you're right. He could be doing voice-over work. There are a lot of other wrestlers who could be doing so, as well.
@The Bored AF Guitarist Elliot has narrated many times and is great, add Greg to the mix? Best Western movie or Western documentary ever, right there, yeah.
They could have almost passed him off as John Wayne's or Geronimo's older brother. He kinda looks a little like both.
' I never let him go behind me again "
Wise decision mate
Rear attack đ
That's what she said
Lol, I wonder how many people who thumbed up your comment know of the sharpie incident and therefore actually fully got it.
If I had a nickel....
I feel heâd be great in a Tarantino movie.
Oh shit! Hell yea!
Just the quiet, no-nonsense hit man.
Seriously, he's like a cross between Vincent Vega and Bill's brother, amazing call!!
âI still got thisâ, he said, holding up a fist the size of my head!đł
Michael Madison could play him
Greg really follows the code of wrestling. I'm sure other wrestlers appreciated that.
Never really gave Greg the attention growing up but these shoot have me going back and rewatching his matches. Dude came from the relatively early days of modern wrestling and has a bunch of tales he can tell about the old territory days
I was 13 at Ice World in N.J. I yelled at him as he walked to the ring. He turned and stepped at me. He scared the piss out of me. Great wrestler !!
I would see both Steiner brothers at the gym, along with several other wrestlers when I lived in Atlanta.
Rick was great. He would chat, spot you without asking (even if you said you were good), and was always very friendly.
Scott was an a-hole. He would stare people down, went out of his way to be rude, and he was constantly in trouble with the law. My lifting buddy and I were both cops, which they didn't know, and we would hear stories about Scott regularly.
Lex Luger was probably the nicest wrestler I met, though. Such a shame what happened to him.
@@jdunnatl Yeah I like Luger, what a nice guy. It's so funny too cause his character The Narcissist is the polar opposite of Luger.
Cool story man. That's another mark of a great wrestler and cool and I love that. How they deal with kids. They know how to work the crowd and Greg, clearly knows how to work a crowd and studies them and changes things on the fly if need be. I've seen him a few times irl too and he's mostly always a good sport and good with the crowd. He might not stick around long afterwards, but he acknowledges the fans, waves, signs autos etc. and when you see him talking to people he's all smiles. Well, as much as Greg smiles anyway, lol.
@@MrBilld75 My ex-girlfriend's whole family loved wrestling, and she apparently didn't believe me when I would talk about some of the conversations I'd had with Luger.
It's not that he and I were friends at all, he just loved people. He would talk about life, his kids, and wrestling sometimes with people. Very open and sincere about mistakes and things he took for granted. Really interesting to listen to.
I saw him at a buffet one day and my girlfriend sarcastically said, "Why don't you say 'hi' to your friend."
Then he came up and said hello, calling me by name - which honestly really shocked me.
We shook hands and I politely said hello, and then after he left, my girlfriend said with a straight dead face, "I'll never doubt you again."
Priceless! đđ€Ł
@@jdunnatl Hehehe, that's awesome!
I never realized what a cool guy Valentine is. Seems like the guy never rips on anyone.
I hated him as a kid. Thought he was boring on the mic....But here I am 40 years later binging these videos thinking âI was so wrong as a little kid. This guy is awesome!!
@@michaelberry1382 I like to listen to his interviews and respect him as a person, but i still think he was a boring wrestler. He didn't have any charisma.
I appreciate The Hammerâs work sooo much more now than I ever did as a kid. Itâs hard to go back and watch some of the guys like Hogan and Warrior now, but Greg Valentine was always a solid worker.
I got drunk with him one time he was funny
@Paul Blackman Major respect for Arn too!
As we get older and understand more we appreciate the substance over the flash. Kids appreciate the flash.
The heart and soul of the WWF was always down in the mud for me. Lots of guys who worked hard and never made it to the Hollywood level. At a certain point it just felt as if everything had to be main event, only more outrageous than the one last week. I think it was either the UW or Undertaker who made me lose interest in wrestling during that development. It just got too scripted and silly. Remember the urn the manager used to have with him for early UT matches? I mean, we know down here that he's not actually undead, right?
Anyways, I liked the old stuff better. When Adonis did his gay shtick, for example, it lasted for about ten seconds until the makeup came off and then the guy just looked mean. That's the way I liked it. Wrestlers in sparkly costumes is fine as long as someone tears them. Stuntmen in sparkly costumes pretending to be wrestlers wasn't really my thing.
I feel like Valentine is experiencing a resurgence in popularity lately. These shoot clips are getting a ton of views, he was in Piper's documentary, and he and Beefcake are gonna be on the lost treasures show too. Good to see. I always thought he was one of the best...and he did it a long time.
A VERY long time indeed. I grew up watching him and last saw him wrestling at a local event on the independent circuit only maybe a decade ago, if that.
These old school wrestlers like Greg tell stories that are gold. Guys as these are assets and they should write their stories in form of books to be preserved for ever.
steiners were so great early then they tried to break them up and turn scott into a steroid freak that act was tired
Greg is an icon. I first started watching him about 40 years ago on WWE TV when he was managed by the late, great 'Grand Wizard of Wrestling'.
I couldn't imagine getting punched by those huge hands. He is such a class act. These interviews of him are fantastic.
"I gave him my back and he abused it" Unfortunate wording there.
Ahhhhh skeet skeet
I thought somebody would say something đđ
đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
well know what he meant -- that's just where your mind is at that you needed to point that out
I have to say Greg Valentine is absolutely the most class act in this industry.
That Cuban link is đ„
I loved "The Hammer." One of my all time favorite wrestlers. Loved him and Tito's feud. Still have Greg's and Beefcake's wrestling figures.
I had those two figures for years, as well as Hillbilly Jim and Hogan. Used to love playing with them, even as a teenager. I also had the ring. Man, if i only kept them all these years. Those thick chunky figures were amazing to slam around.
Greg and ric flair were good when together or wrestling each other .Always had great matches
The Hammer is very interesting to listen too. Very technical and also how things play out in the ring
Greg is a great guy I met him once what a gentleman.
Same here, met him at the airport in Las Vegas while waiting on a flight to Seattle. Powerfully built but very nice. He took pictures with us, signed autographs and spoke with us for maybe 15 minutes when he didnât have to.
I absolutely fucking love this man he's so goddamn straight forward no bullshit
Valentine is one of the most stand up men that came from wrestling.
Greg Valentine was like the Chris Jericho of his era had high praise of people he wrestle and got along with as well.
Every wrestler you ever hear talk about the Steiner brothers the number one thing they say is Rick is a really nice guy
Jacques Rougeau and Vordell Walker think differently
I remember Greg Valentine's classic feud with Chief Jay Strongbow. Dunno why but I liked Valentine a lot in his heel days with the figure four. Rooting for the heel!
Greg was a great heel.
I could listen to The Hammer talk all day.
Thank you Greg for all the GREAT childhood memories!
I met Greg The Hammer Valentine at a convention. Unfortunately, being young and before his time, I wasn't familiar with his character and his matches. But I'm glad I showed some support by paying for a signed Autograph. Great guy, I he looked intimidating. I was like, "Don't hurt me, please!" But he's an amazing person.
One of the all time greats! Itâs good to se him doing well.
The Hammer has got to be one of the coolest wrestlers ever.
Saw Greg many times in the late 70's - early 80's at the County Hall in Charleston SC. My Dad was a huge fan of his. No frills, straight wrestling. Legit. These interviews of his confirm he's a good man also.
My lord back then Scotty was freakish strong and could throw around 250-300 lb guy like they were nothing. Go back and watch some of his early WCW stuff.
Having said that you could tell with Scotty in the early days it.was a mix of adrenaline, being competitive by nature, and then combine that with knowing you are being seen on national television and it led to some hairy situations with whoever they wrestled especially the job guys.
You forgot one all the steroids he was on gave him Roid rage
@@edmahonejr.9364 that's probably trueđ. I remember early in not only the Steiners careers, but early in Benoit's career where they beat the $hit out of Benoit. It may have taken place in japan, I'm not certain because it's been so long ago since I watched it, but I watched it here on youtube. Good match, and my goodness Benoit was tough as nails and the match was good, but he took an a$$ whipping at the hands of the Steiners. I cant even remember who Benoits tag team partner was, but I'm gonna look it up later on.
@@edmahonejr.9364 big poppa pump is all natural buddy.
The more I watch these videos of Valentine the more I appreciate him and what he's done for the business. One of the greatest heels and part of one of the greatest tag team of heels I wrestling history. I could listen to him talk all day. Such a good cool dude who never talks bad about anyone even if they deserve harsh criticism. You are a gem Mr. Valentine
The hammer made you believe the magic back in the day
@Mothman, Greg's Dad was an awesome worker too in his day.
Putting it mildly! Saw him live back in early '70s in little arena in Charleston, SC. From a another time, for sure.
What a good guy - I expected a cynical old coot because he sold being a horrible dude so well in his promos. Of all the shoot interviews I've watched - he might be the dude I would most like to hang out with. Thoughtful and classy - a gentleman.
There are horror stories out there of him being miserable and unfriendly at conventions. But he really seems to be in a better place now.
@@nearvanaman He was drugged out, hopefully hes clean now
Yeah no doubt ! Thing i learned about wrestling is even going way back is , most heels are the coolest most down to earth folks , and the babyfaces are the biggest pricks in real life LOL ! Not always the case obviously . But yeah Greg is a class act ! Thats whats up !
Excellent interview series. Hammer is a great story teller. These guys led quite the lives back in the day.
This interview segment was less than 4 minutes, but we all know, it takes the Hammer 15 minutes to get going.
The more the interviewer pounded on him, the more he liked it.
They donât call him Greg The Gas tank for nothing.
Takes him a hour and a half to watch 60 minutes.
Gorilla Monsoon always said that, take 10/15 minutes to get going
The Hammer doesn't even break a sweat until the fifteen minute mark!
I bet this guy could STILL pick a big dude up and slam him two feet through concrete if he wanted to. That hammer was no joke. Great guy.
Greg is the best.thanks for being youđ
The Hammer was one of my favorites from back in the day
one of my all time favorites. I love listening to him talk about those days. He seems to have a great mind for the business.
Greg is a class guy.
Most classy guy ever! Greg Valentine was the marathon man for sure, could go for hours if he wanted to!
"I still got this, and I could punch him out." Brilliant.
Thank you to hammer for spending time in Portland Oregon.
Heels were at home in Portland
Valentine holding a tea cup makes me laugh.
Itâs actually a regular sized coffee cup. As itâs being held by his giant swollen meat mallets he calls hands, it does appear as a tea cup though.

đŻ% Can appreciate Greg & his response. Steiners were a newer breed. Scott was definitely stronger than Rick and was more athletic to. So definitely he was trying to be more innovative. Greg being so Old School, not used to free flying.
Greg "The Hammer" Valentine was so much of a good heel that I liked hating him when I was a kid. Cheers to you, The Hammer!
I love Greg Valentine.. definitely one of my favorite heel's from the 80's era of WWF
I wasn't a big fan of The Hammer when I watched wrestling as a kid, I think most of the matches I saw him in he was more of a named jobber. Since watching so many of these interviews and you can just tell he came up in the tough days of wrestling, so much respect for Greg. I would have loved to party with him back in the day, im sure he has stories for days!
I can understand how you see that . You only know what u saw . I started watching in 85 and he was still Somewhat I perceived to be a badass . But that was the WWF days . so everyone was toned down . THEN i watched more of his stuff from the 70s and early 80s ! Holy shit this guy was rough and tumble ! I first seen him in WWF , i had the LJN rubber figure as kid . Then I became a fan of NWA shortly after . And after that , i thought NWA was real WWF was fake . i rented a video that had Valentine VS. Piper Dog collar match ! WOW ! my 8 year old self flipped out ! couldnt nobody tell me wrestling was fake after that ! At least till i was older loL ! But damn it was believable then ! Piper actually lost most hearing in one ear after . Sorry to be long winded bro ! And yes he would and still be cool to party with in my book ! Peace bro
@@Brando-Lee3725 Ohhh man those LJN figures!! I had a bunch and the ring. Good times. I was very much a WWF baby growing up. Going back and watching some of the 70s and early 80s stuff it was a whole different world back in those days. The way they made their punches seem real ( im sure some were) is like a lost art these days.

Greg one of the down to earth okd style wreslter. I saw him in fresno back in tte 80s he was very nice to me and ny dad.
As far as i see, Mr Valentine aged well and time treated good on him.
I watched Greg back in the 70's and 80's. One bad SOB!
He had a good teacher.
I had his rubber doll in the 80s. He looks the same. Incredible
I've never met Scott, but I have met Rick, & he was a super nice guy!
I remember the Rechstieners putting on wrestling camps when I was a kid, they're still talked about in our home town kind of cool we all went to the same high school. GO WARRIORS!!!!
I met Him during the 80's at the Oakdale theater in Wallingford CT he was huge
Greg Valentine interviews are the best. He's open, honest and sincere, and even if he didn't like someone whether professionally or personally, he never had a cross word for them. The Hammer's a class act.
Greg is class act
If you get a chance watch A&E Biography. They had the road warriors, roddy piper and Steve Austin. Greg Valentine was on the one with roddy piper and had a lot of good things to say about him. It takes you back to the days when wrestling was awesome.
Hammer is awesome. Much love.
Greg Valentine, this great man could sell a coach load of Tarantulas to an Arachnophobic Club!
Such a worker in the Ring. Many matches, when you look back, were amazing because of this wrestler.
Much Respect!
Back in 2017 I wanna say, I... well, I was feet away from Greg Valentine, because he'd come down to visit Pensacola for our media convention, Pensacon, my first year volunteering for the event. Didn't speak to him; it was the day before and he seemed very introspective chilling in the lobby of the hotel that everyone was staying at. Didn't want to break his concentration.
That was also the year Ted DiBiase showed up IIRC. He became a pastor after his wrestling runs and gave a sermon on that Sunday; I couldn't go, but it probably would have been fascinating.
I also met and shared some friendly words (through the years) with Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Jake the Snake and even Ric Flair a bit. Looking forward to meeting more awesome classic wrestlers next year!
You do amazing videos, Title Match! I love seeing these clips. Keep up the great work!

I'm a lifelong fan of Scott Steiner. But he could be dangerous. And Hammer's comments are respected. This business we are watching, can have pitfalls.
Well said!
Facts well said
The older he gets, the hair stays exactly the same lol
His hair is too afraid to mess with him
Yeah it looks kind of weird actually. Maybe he should aim for the hair of a 43 year old man rather than a 24 year
Thats bc when you get big you gotta bring ppl up w you.
He hasn't changed in the last 40 years
Is it real?
I always loved watching the hammer in mid Atlantic back in the day. I remember watching him and ric flair as a tagteam they were badass.

Valentine/Flair vs. the Andersons were some of the best tag matches ever.

But in four years I was into it, I went to matches in the old (and tiny) County Hall in Charleston, SC and saw Johnny Valentine and rookie Ric Flair in a tag match, and the Andersons...but those four were working same side of the street in those days in Mid-Atlantic area (along with Super Destroyer, Wahoo, Blackjack Mulligan, Patera, Tim Woods, Paul Jones, Sonny king). But Greg showed up later, as did Flair feud with Anderson "cousins." Fun times.

Valentine's matches never did anything for me. But he seems like an honest, good guy.
You right Valentine matches are snooze fest
Yeah too bad he didn't do more flippy dives. His matches also didn't have enough false finishes. I honestly don't even know if he even worked his matches out with the other guy back stage first, I mean I can't recall a single match where Valentine did a synchronized spot with his opponent. So boring when guys don't outdo the main event in the third match. Also he didn't have a catch phrase which automatically rules him out as entertaining in the ring.
