Want to see how we rigged our rope swing off our highline? We also had a nifty way of hauling people back up without them being attached to the haul line. This is high risk and only super experienced riggers should do this only AFTER they have jumped with someone who knows what they are doing. I'm hoping that showing you how to rig a rope swing will overwhelm you with how much detail goes into a safe rig and that someone doesn't see a jump video and think they can clip 2 dynamic ropes to a highline and start jumping off cliffs. Please be careful and don't try everything you see on CZcams!

ok
Can you do more videos on setting up legit swings..??
Sketchiest part of the whole video was kicking that bag off the edge lol
But it was for safety ;) haha
Yeah i feel it to because the 2 guys not strapped in
It was the most dangerous moment I saw too
All the other stuff looked crazy but you guys know what you’re doing so risk was all mitigated.
During the bag drop seemed the part that could have turned into a PSA
No shit
Yah if the rope stretched around one of there ankles it could have pulled them off :/
I'm so glad you did your best to discourage rope jumping. But, showing those guys push the bag off without being tied off was not good.
Shut the hell up sometimes
The bag drop looked like the least safe part lol
at 4:00 there is big "mould effect" thing going on. This is interesting data for the discussion between ElectroBoom and Steve Mould
Nice video. To fill out your safety comments and importance of inspection, in a much less dangerous situation I saw a failure happen because of not thinking everything through. A rope had been rigged across a lake, about 200 feet. One end was on top of an almost cliff that dropped about 30-40 feet then flattened out to the water's edge. The lake water was above your head a few feet from shore. A pulley was rigged on the rope with a bar to hang from made a nice, fun ride to splash into the lake. The rope was inspected every few rides, and the knots and rope around the trees. The knots holding the bar triangle onto the pulley was inspected each time. But, nobody thought to check the bar. The bar was a piece of pipe with a rope run through it that was knotted into a triangle and securely tied to the pull slide. After maybe 10 or so rides, with progressively fancier dive stunts off the bar, a girl grabbed onto the bar, ran off into space, and ... the rope threaded through the bar broke. I watched her fall into space, and frantically run and flail her ams in the air until her feet hit the side of the almost cliff near the bottom. That and her frantic arm movements propelled her out into the water in a crazy flop crash with a splash at the end. She was a bit bruised, and very shook up, but ok. Just one of those lessons to make sure you think of how everything works when you put it together.
How do you test that people have enough strength to hold onto the bar? I presume you've seen the "fat people fail videos" of their hands slipping off. Now I'm scared to try, and I'm skinny. :) Come to think of it, I'd use opposing grips, that much safer.
@@markus717 Hmm. Like buying a yacht, if you have to ask... ;-)
In this case, I did gymnastics for a long time as an adult. The guy who rigged it was a college gymnast. We were all young, and in great shape. Nobody slipped off because their hands gave out. And I was a lot stronger than most there.
Practical advice, do pullups somewhere. Graduate to weighted pullups and hangs, but care for your shoulders. Lift smooth, not bouncy-bounce with anything over 15-20 lbs. 15 years ago, I banged out pullup sets of 12-14 reps with 70 lbs on a chain belt and had fun. Now? I had to back off to max 20 lbs because my rotator cuffs hurt too much and we'll see if I get back to where I was, ever. (That was precipitated by adding butterfly stroke to my swimming for a good sprint in the water. Problem is, I didn't have the shoulder girdle flexibility I used to have, and you need great flexibility for butterfly. Yeah, I knew, but ignored it. We do that.)
Deadlift without grips (I never use grips) is good for hand strength. But these days I max out at a few pounds over my body weight. I'm not going for heavy lift, I want good overall and a balanced front-back musculature.
Getting strong hands and arms for functional fitness---It's practice. A couple, maybe 3 times a week, and sometimes work with a friend to max out so you have trouble holding a fork at dinner. Have fun with it. Don't sweat any one or two workouts if they're not great. And never do high skill, must-succeed moves after heavy calisthenics, unless something forces you into it. In gymnastics it was always, heavy stretching and light calisthenics to warm up about 30 minutes. Basic tumbling for 20-30 minutes, then get to skills we were working on for an hour. Last 30-45 minutes was calisthenics to the max.
Do some skills and testing workouts, pullups, climbing wall, etc. Develop confidence. Trust me, I know what it's like to be really scared of something. If that's where you're at, best to be with a coach who knows what can go wrong, and will spot you, make sure it's safe.
In a mountaineering situation, I would never have thought of using a bar. Hmm. But if I did, I'd have a separate safety harness, just like you have for slackline.
here from steve moulds video
he mentioned how the rope rose up when you chucked the bag of stones off the cliff when explaining why the same thing happens to bead chains
That would be hard pass from me
I'll stick to climbing the rock, not jumping from it, lol.
Pro tip: Climb the rock and paraglide from it... ;-)
BrazBlue damn right rock climbing > all other sports period. Get triggered.
I'll stick to being the king of my local school yard swing set. All those guys over there think I'm the boss cuz I can slack chain it going so high, then I really wow them when I shoot myself 10-15' off those suckers. If anyone shows them this video, my legacy is dead. Not bragging but I can even reverse leg pump to get myself going, but sometimes I like to mix it up and have someone push me & run underneath...That's when we're really putting on a show.
This video was kind of cool I guess, if you're into weak types of adventures. lol
This is sick guys!! I pray 1 day we don't see a video of this failing. Be safe & best of luck!!
Dang, that’s jumping to hell
Agreed. I mean I bet rope jumping is a blast, but all that effort, gear, risk mitigation and attention doesn't seem worth it tbh. Not regularly anyway.
From an arborists perspective, you folks are champions. Thanks for the Rush. Cheers
If at 3:50 your foot would stuck in the rope you would be in a baaaad spot
Yep, thats why they should've always been with a safety line
@@mickey321qw yea the safety line wouldn’t worked, you would have lost your leg from that fall and probably more
@@nicocombs4990 The safety line would have hopefully stopped you from going over the edge with the bag, with or without your legs attached.
"Don't die" haha words to live by literally. Super epic video! Thank you!
I love this channel and just subscribed yesterday. I climbed for many years and always felt redundancy was paramount to safety and staying alive.
The interesting thing I noticed after awhile were the places in the "system" where we would overlook this for one reason or another and justify it to ourselves accordingly. When climbing , we would be using 1 rope....and 1 harness. Now granted , if these 2 things couldn't be trusted...we probably wouldn't have or shouldn't have been on them. This brings me to my point as there is always some "blind spot" and we do what we can to minimize this possibility. Always be vigilant , aware and never too comfortable with everything. This channel is probably the best channel I've ever seen in regards to covering the full spectrum of Lined Altitude Sports. They always present it with the advice of making sure you go with someone experienced first and learn from them.
Lastly , Sports , like life, are fun as heck but a bit dangerous at times so use your intellect as often as possible.
Ps , so did I ever back up my rope and harness when climbing? Harness yes , rope...no.
Pss , Can't wait to read
The Bolting Bible
I really like how you feel responsible about your content and your viewers!
Very interesting video! I can't believe you guys actually do that! I can't look out the window of tall buildings so there is virtually no chance of me "trying this at home." But I found this super interesting and technical. It actually seems relatively safe if you know what you are doing. Great video!
lol why are they not wearing a harness when kicking that bag of rocks off the edge... unbelievably stupid
That's right if their leg gets entangled it's game over!
Please tell me how a harness would help if your leg got stuck. I wouldn't want to live through that. And most personal anchors can't handle that force anyways. Those guys should have been further back, not wearing harnesses.
@@HowNOT2 gotta agree with you there, should have used something other than their bodies to push the bag off
@@HowNOT2 So you're saying personal anchors cant handle the weight of a bag of rocks? If that's the case I would be worried about trying to use one to anchor myself.
@@DJcyberslash I think he was trying to say is that the personal harness wouldn't stand a chance in case you got stuck to the bag's rope while it's at the peak of it's force/speed. The harness would break or your leg would be shredded to pieces...
I didnt have a bloody clue what you where talking about. But it sounded very, informative, expert, thorough and safe. So nice one.
Good work guys, the redundancy of redundancy in equipment just shows how cautious and meticulous you guys approach this. Cheers from Portugal
it felt safe enough. We have even better systems now that make every redundancy have full efficiency so we need less of them. Hope to put out a video about all that this fall... get it :)
That’s some next level rope swing shit! I was just telling my 7 year old today about our rope swing when I was a kid... 70’ pepper tree. 1” rope, climb cliff next to tree w rope in hand... jump on and hope tree or rope did not snap as it sometimes would... typically with 2-3 people on board.... I hope your channel blows up as it should! Subd...
This was incredible. Thank you for your wealth of knowledge!
Thanks. See our newest rope jump video just put out this week.
Such a relief to see you set out how ridiculously rigorous you have to be to maximise the safety margin. Well done. I wish everyone climbed like this, letalone did this crazy shit! Thanks for the amazing work you put into these.
James Madelin thanks. We try to be careful... after all I am jumping off a cliff! :)
Hey man, if us canyoneers want to be sketch, let us be sketch
"mould effect" at 4:00. awesome
That was awesome! Thanks for making the effort bringing it to youtube to give me those pins and needles in my hands and feet and the idea to now go out and do the same :)
Think I'll try it thanks.
OMG, wow, crazy, good job guys! Great video.
Awesome video. When I was in Yosemite last year I saw from people high lining from the valley. Always wanted to try something like that but I’ve got a lot of learning to do before I could ever try.
Great walk thru! Folks really need to think every detail through. Take your time, don't rush, check and recheck, don't be macho!
Everyone’s attitude was so much better after they jumped... love it man! Totally jealous! I’m watching this with my 2 year old and she’s loving it also...
Excellent video.
This is amazing and scares the hell out me at the same time!
How does this not have millions of views?!?! What a way to spend the day with some friends!
That was awesome.......you definitely know your shit...... And you made it fun. Serious and fun. Thank you for all the highlights and SAFETY messages. 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Great video, very informative, keep up the insane work. :)
That literally got my heart pumping watching that. Insane but awesome, yall got massive balls
Fantastic Channel!! Absolutely awesome.
Amazing to watch!
Great informative vid on a taboo topic. And, nice gear wall. Welcome to the gear head club.
That looks like a lot of work. I'm just gonna clip a climbing rope to a highline and hope for the best..
What could possibly go wrong?
Your garage is like my local rock climbing/mountaineering store. That’s so much money on that wall behind you 😳
@Got_nuffin_on_me Of course lol
Meanwhile I'm having sweaty hands for the entire 18 minutes.
i could not agree more. my hands are still wet
@@stephenparker9188 that's kinda gay
I was more worried the bag was going to mess something up, more than when the humans flew off 😁
Good job.
7:17 - The classic "Do as I say, NOT as I do"!
Misapplication of the saying.
OMG! Freaks me out just watching it. Glad you were/are safe. Don’t worry I won’t try rope jumping. Lol
Well, you did it. You convinced me to go out and jump off a cliff now. Your right. I have no idea what I would be doing. So instead of messing with those pesky ropes, I'll leave them at the house.
Sick video really enjoyed it
Wow, a very, very good video.. thanks!!!
awesome video and job. thanks
holy moly even the bag of stones scene made my hands like i just came from a swim through the sea with heavy rain when coming out on to the beach :O
Crazy! 🤯 stay safe and have fun, I won’t be trying this. 😂
well done
These guys really know what they are doing. It seems a lot of thought has to go into building highlines.
You guys are crazzy
"OOOooooOHHHH"
"ohohOHOHHHOHOOOOHHHohohohOHOHohohhohhhh"
"oooOOOOHHHOOOHHHHOHOOOOOOOOO"
"OH OHOOH OOOH OH OHH OoOoOHH!"
Nice video .Watching from NEPAL .
I think this was my favorite video yet, and answered where the opening montage clip came from. Don’t worry, I’d never try this, I appreciate you all doing it for me.
That was sick dude i wish i had the guts for that
Suddenly... I want to try this.
that is awesome, that said i would be too scary to do that
This is nuts
I don’t think I’ve seen a video that has given me more anxiety than some black mirror episodes, but this did it
Wild man... wild...
I like the title great video I subbed
wow now that I know the systems and redundancies I just need to do the math on forces. Thanks :D
Wow, your amazing.
see my instagram for last weekend's stunt :) instagram.com/hownottohighline/
I would love to do a rope swing, but I don’t think I’d ever be comfortable setting it up.
Holy shit bro. Insane
If I could go with you guys I'd do this in a heartbeat, but seeing that I'm not iij n this video, I'll stick to climbing and jumping from my giant trees and rope swings 😆
For tidy rope management you might want to consider adopting some sailing ship rope coiling techniques, like a figure 8 flake or something.
Some might work better with climbing ropes than others, I'm sure the thin-ness compared to hauling rope on a tallship will make the behavior very different, but it might be way better than the messy piles I'm seeing here.
Or use the ranger parachute cord method.
incredible
WTFH!!!!!!!! AMAZING!!!!!!
You are crazy! XD jaja, thanks for the vídeo
You guys are your rope work is seriously cool. Are there vids about knots and the rigging things you are talking about?
why in gods name would you not have the guys kicking that bag over clipped in and secure?!?!. all it takes is one tangle grabbing his giant boot and taking him over with it.... so not smart...
There is nothing to secure us behind that rope. If secured and your foot gets stuck you will wish you were dead. Ropes don't jump backwards. We make it sound like a bigger deal so it is entertaining :).
@@HowNOT2 "Wish you were dead" != "dead", but you know more about this than I do.
Yeah, totally. That was pretty farking stupid. Much better ways to push the bag off than what was shown on vid.
Sirmellowman they didn’t have the push rock bag man tied into anything ?
Shit
probably should have just tossed the rope overboard first, so it wasn't flipping all over the place while the bag was falling
I do actually want to try this once, the feeling of trowing yourself out from a hige place with only death beneath you, hoping the robes wil save you.
the first time to jump off is bound to be a once in a lifetime experience no matter what happens.
Lmao my hands look like i just washed them and didn’t dry them
I love the ocean:)
Sooo, is Johnny Sins now a climber? Dope
cool video
Wow there is a lot more to this than I thought. Caught absolutely everything will be trying this next weekend. NO!
What does Yosemite think about this? Do the rangers condone line jumping?
I'm definitely going to rope jump.
Thanks for the instruction! I'm gonna make a mini one in my backyard and throw my cat off it. Ain't landing on NO legs Whiskers!
I got an adrenaline rush just watching that. Awesome, no way in hell I'd jump, but awesome.
You blokes have rocks in your heads !!! But hey,, Great video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
And between thier legs hahaha
I'm curious how long you use the climbing ropes. (Ie do you use the same ropes for multiple jumps? retire after one event? etc) Dynamic ropes are fall rated, and there's not a full shock load applied in a rope swing set up.
I bet some dope photos could be taken at that spot early in the morning with mist and the sunrise. Would be so cool at the perfect angle
you can see a sweet one on @slackinhigh posted sept 20, 2017
Man few of those looked like yall were close to the far wall. Also scared about those flips lol
I WANT TO DO THAT!!!!!
Yes, it seems like they guys testing the bag should at least be on a personal anchor.
Wish you would have showed people coming back. Curious how you do it.
Edit: Posted this prior to finishing the video. I see that you explained it further. Still would be nice to see it in action.
You guys are insane.
Steve mould says hi
Why was I more nervous for the bag test than the actual jump? 😂😂
Because you've watched too many pirate movies where the foot get caught in anchor rope and pulls the pirate off the ship ;)
I have jumped out of aircraft in the past. But I have no idea how you guys do what you do. I am slightly scared when I watch.
I don't know why i watched this whole video. Bc i was completely lost after 5 secs of you explaining what u did n how. The jumping n other part was cool. But unless ur a climber this sounds like a dr trying to explain how he's gonna do surgery lol. This would be fun as hell to try.
i wanna do that clif jumping thing
As a climber, one who often free solos, I think you guys are fucking nuts, in the best way. Nuttiness backed up by competency. Love it.
Dont worry...ill never do that!... have fun
So he's going to try this now ?
Ya did a good job overwhelming me
