How Not to Rope Jump - Extreme Rope Jumping off Highlines!

  • Not sure why youtube insists on promoting our oldest video about rope jumping still??? We have two others that are way way better! • How NOT to Rope Jump. ... and • The Insanity Rope Swin...
    Want to see how we rigged our rope swing off our highline? We also had a nifty way of hauling people back up without them being attached to the haul line. This is high risk and only super experienced riggers should do this only AFTER they have jumped with someone who knows what they are doing. I'm hoping that showing you how to rig a rope swing will overwhelm you with how much detail goes into a safe rig and that someone doesn't see a jump video and think they can clip 2 dynamic ropes to a highline and start jumping off cliffs. Please be careful and don't try everything you see on CZcams!

    Nice video. To fill out your safety comments and importance of inspection, in a much less dangerous situation I saw a failure happen because of not thinking everything through. A rope had been rigged across a lake, about 200 feet. One end was on top of an almost cliff that dropped about 30-40 feet then flattened out to the water's edge. The lake water was above your head a few feet from shore. A pulley was rigged on the rope with a bar to hang from made a nice, fun ride to splash into the lake. The rope was inspected every few rides, and the knots and rope around the trees. The knots holding the bar triangle onto the pulley was inspected each time. But, nobody thought to check the bar. The bar was a piece of pipe with a rope run through it that was knotted into a triangle and securely tied to the pull slide. After maybe 10 or so rides, with progressively fancier dive stunts off the bar, a girl grabbed onto the bar, ran off into space, and ... the rope threaded through the bar broke. I watched her fall into space, and frantically run and flail her ams in the air until her feet hit the side of the almost cliff near the bottom. That and her frantic arm movements propelled her out into the water in a crazy flop crash with a splash at the end. She was a bit bruised, and very shook up, but ok. Just one of those lessons to make sure you think of how everything works when you put it together.

    • @markus717
      @markus717 Před rokem

      How do you test that people have enough strength to hold onto the bar? I presume you've seen the "fat people fail videos" of their hands slipping off. Now I'm scared to try, and I'm skinny. :) Come to think of it, I'd use opposing grips, that much safer.

    • @BriPHan
      @BriPHan Před rokem +2

      @@markus717 Hmm. Like buying a yacht, if you have to ask... ;-)
      In this case, I did gymnastics for a long time as an adult. The guy who rigged it was a college gymnast. We were all young, and in great shape. Nobody slipped off because their hands gave out. And I was a lot stronger than most there.
      Practical advice, do pullups somewhere. Graduate to weighted pullups and hangs, but care for your shoulders. Lift smooth, not bouncy-bounce with anything over 15-20 lbs. 15 years ago, I banged out pullup sets of 12-14 reps with 70 lbs on a chain belt and had fun. Now? I had to back off to max 20 lbs because my rotator cuffs hurt too much and we'll see if I get back to where I was, ever. (That was precipitated by adding butterfly stroke to my swimming for a good sprint in the water. Problem is, I didn't have the shoulder girdle flexibility I used to have, and you need great flexibility for butterfly. Yeah, I knew, but ignored it. We do that.)
      Deadlift without grips (I never use grips) is good for hand strength. But these days I max out at a few pounds over my body weight. I'm not going for heavy lift, I want good overall and a balanced front-back musculature.
      Getting strong hands and arms for functional fitness---It's practice. A couple, maybe 3 times a week, and sometimes work with a friend to max out so you have trouble holding a fork at dinner. Have fun with it. Don't sweat any one or two workouts if they're not great. And never do high skill, must-succeed moves after heavy calisthenics, unless something forces you into it. In gymnastics it was always, heavy stretching and light calisthenics to warm up about 30 minutes. Basic tumbling for 20-30 minutes, then get to skills we were working on for an hour. Last 30-45 minutes was calisthenics to the max.
      Do some skills and testing workouts, pullups, climbing wall, etc. Develop confidence. Trust me, I know what it's like to be really scared of something. If that's where you're at, best to be with a coach who knows what can go wrong, and will spot you, make sure it's safe.
      In a mountaineering situation, I would never have thought of using a bar. Hmm. But if I did, I'd have a separate safety harness, just like you have for slackline.

If anyone shows them this video, my legacy is dead. Not bragging but I can even reverse leg pump to get myself going, but sometimes I like to mix it up and have someone push me & run underneath...That's when we're really putting on a show.

    I love this channel and just subscribed yesterday. I climbed for many years and always felt redundancy was paramount to safety and staying alive.
    The interesting thing I noticed after awhile were the places in the "system" where we would overlook this for one reason or another and justify it to ourselves accordingly. When climbing , we would be using 1 rope....and 1 harness. Now granted , if these 2 things couldn't be trusted...we probably wouldn't have or shouldn't have been on them. This brings me to my point as there is always some "blind spot" and we do what we can to minimize this possibility. Always be vigilant , aware and never too comfortable with everything. This channel is probably the best channel I've ever seen in regards to covering the full spectrum of Lined Altitude Sports. They always present it with the advice of making sure you go with someone experienced first and learn from them.
    Lastly , Sports , like life, are fun as heck but a bit dangerous at times so use your intellect as often as possible.
    Ps , so did I ever back up my rope and harness when climbing? Harness yes , rope...no.
    Pss , Can't wait to read

    For tidy rope management you might want to consider adopting some sailing ship rope coiling techniques, like a figure 8 flake or something.
    Some might work better with climbing ropes than others, I'm sure the thin-ness compared to hauling rope on a tallship will make the behavior very different, but it might be way better than the messy piles I'm seeing here.

    I'm curious how long you use the climbing ropes. (Ie do you use the same ropes for multiple jumps? retire after one event? etc) Dynamic ropes are fall rated, and there's not a full shock load applied in a rope swing set up.

    I bet some dope photos could be taken at that spot early in the morning with mist and the sunrise. Would be so cool at the perfect angle

    Yes, it seems like they guys testing the bag should at least be on a personal anchor.

    Wish you would have showed people coming back. Curious how you do it.
    Edit: Posted this prior to finishing the video. I see that you explained it further. Still would be nice to see it in action.

      Because you've watched too many pirate movies where the foot get caught in anchor rope and pulls the pirate off the ship ;)

    I don't know why i watched this whole video. Bc i was completely lost after 5 secs of you explaining what u did n how. The jumping n other part was cool. But unless ur a climber this sounds like a dr trying to explain how he's gonna do surgery lol. This would be fun as hell to try.
