pretty shitty to not have a paid ad tag. I would actually buy sponsored stuff if they paid into programs like the IMI.
worst ref is the one who does not do his job which is to enforce the rules ,all the rules, all the time, to the letter
no matter how long it takes to play the game 2hours or 22 hours
Auger 'retiring' is the most transparent firing in the history of the world. He was fired, yet allowed to remain some dignity with the NHL publicly stating that he simply quit. It's a common business practice.
i fucking cheered when he got the boot
He wanted to spend more time with his family but his family appealed.
@@i.p.knightly149 he probably grounded his kid on a dumb call
@@kevinmorrice He built a penalty box in his house.

I always say, I trust WWE referees more than I trust NHL referees.
When WWE refs miss less calls than a group of 4 officials, there's something wrong lol
Yo when I saw the Ref actually Noticing KO with the Brass Knuckles v. Paul at the Royal Rumble, it blew my mind.
Its all fake so it doesnt matter
By today's NHL Officiating standards, Auger is just a regular NHL ref.
A French Canadian ref for sure... 😂
Somebody didn't watch hockey in the 80s and 90s.
Since sports betting got big all refs have been sus af.
@@OrganicGreens It's insane how "in your face" the fucking betting is nowadays. Non-stop ads, getting the announcers and intermission personnel to parrot the slogans and shit constantly. Giving the odds every five seconds for over under whatever the fuck.
It is poisoning the whole damn league.
Bulls**t.
I was at that Canucks game. The officiating was brutal the whole game but the Burrows penalties were so obviously targeted it was an embarrassment for the league. We were all stunned.
The worst part was next week Ron Maclean trying to defend Auger. He got sent to purgatory for the hatchet job he did to Burrows blaming him for the Augers calls on Burrows.
@@donziperk Maclean was such a referee homer that he would treat them all like gods.
I was a d coach for a high school JV team. I had multiple players complaining about a ref being drunk and smelling like booze. He also was interfering in plays and was doing odd things on the ice. Head ref was near our box, I politely told him that the boys smell alcohol on that ref. I was immediately kicked out of the game and got a 3 game suspension. While the drunk ref was allowed to continue. I was approached by a man I've seen at our rink once in awhile, he questioned my claim, I found out he was the president of USA Hockey, he followed that ref every game, and about 2 weeks he got him and discharged him.
Cool story bro
It’s insane how the only people in the arena that are being paid to do a job (the refs) are the one with no accountability. I coached both my boys their entire minor hockey careers and have seen some disgusting stuff from refs. Here in Alberta there has never been a successful appeal against a refs call. That tells you something right there. They believe themselves to be omnipotent.
Tim Peel needs a video.
I was at the Nashville - Vancouver game and it was crazy
Was that the infamous James Neal embellishment call?
The 7 minute pp when Gaustad got injured and bieksa chirped him and got tossed?
Yeah I came here thinking it was going to be Timmy P, I had completely forgotten about Auger up until now. But I do remember seeing all those clips when they happened.
As a referee Kerry Fraser was maybe worst but at least he was not gross and despicable as Auger.
Kerry Fraser was a 100% asshole!! I will NEVER forgive him for 1993!
But his hair was perfect.
Fraser's unintentional (one hopes) failure to call an obvious high sticking major and automatic game misconduct on Wayne Gretzky in a tied game six between the LA Kings and the Toronto Maple Leafs still represents the worst most impactful refereeing decision of all time.
Stephane Auger is the most corrupt official by far. I remember the Burrows incident quite well. So unprofessional. I would understand not giving Burrows the benefit of the doubt, but what he did should have gotten Auger suspended for the remainder of the year.
I would imagine his commentary is abysmal.
@@TheCandyman75 You know, "Werewolves of London" started playing in my head as soon as I read that.....
@@mikemyros4142 Same! 😄
I don't know about that I'd say Don Koharski is pretty up there
Eat your donuts Koharski!, haha
At least he is remembered as a joke now.
I Agree Koharski is the Worst Ref!
Nez, Koharski is at the doughnut shop :)
You're right. Koharski pushes Auger down to at least 4th.
Been a hockey fan since 1967. Koharski , Dave (quick eyes) Newell)and Bruce Hood from the old days when men were men are the worst ever. Worst linesman in my mind are Leon Stickle and Kevin Collins
Kerry Fraser for sure
Anyone over the age of 45 would agree…he wasn’t bad but what a douche….
@@Neuroheads Gretzky & Quebec are the two examples I remember

Fraser refuse 2 goals against the Quebec Nordiques 9 both playoff games ). 1986-1987 versus the Montreal Canadiens (Alain Coté got his goal refuse for goalie interference) and 1994-1995 against New York Rangers. Both goals could made the game won for Quebec.

How did I know this would be mostly french Canadians? Because they're in my family and unbelievably stubborn and touchy about everything regardless of their actual level of skill or expertise on pretty much any topic. 😂
Shane Doan story is a perfect example.
As a habs fan nobody did a worst job than chris lee
One can't help but think that Auger was fixing games for bookmakers.
Kerry Fraser and Bill McCreary were the worst for my money. Fraser seemed to think the fans paid to see him perform, calling trifling penalties while allowing flagrant offenses to go unpunished, while nobody could lose complete control of a game the way McCreary consistently did.
It's rather interesting that Auger only had the Doan controversy up until the Burrows incident (and there were quite a few years there) and he has a half dozen afterwards. Either he suffered a severe deterioration in skill for some reason or the Burrows incident put every fan and every player on notice to watch this guy
Koharski
Kerry Fraser was a total goof
LOL $2500 fine for a millionaire hockey player is like one of us watching this video being fined $25 dollars or heck $2.50! Oh no I am sure Burrows really felt that fine. 🤣
To me that felt like they felt like they "needed" to do it since he made very clear comments about the ref (and the NHL similar to other leagues don't want people to talk about bad ref calls), but would not put it higher because they knew he was 100% right.
While they didn't have the balls to confirm that the calls where batshit crazy, it might be the closest you would have come to such a statement at the time.
I think the blackouts are a form of false advertisement. The games are advertised all week, game time comes, game is blacked out.... WTF.... Pay $200 a month for cable, and black out the f'in games, such a pile of crap...
Here in Germany I feel like we have alot of bad refs as well. Just 2 days ago I was actually angry since they did not call a blindside check, did not call a very obvious holding of a stick, but later called a high stick but overlooked that the player who got the penalty was being held at the same time. It was a high stick, but you also need to call the 2 minutes holding at the same time.
And as it often is the case, that powerplay decided the game in the end.
While the NHL clearly is faster and has higher skill level in comparison, it feels like the league and players improve every year while refs stay at the same level, which means it feels it is getting worse and worse. But what do I know, I am just a fan...
For those of you old enough to remember the Bobby Orr days, this was by far one of the most egregious calls in NHL History.
czcams.com/video/JqJN8AIc8ck/video.html
Wally Harris ejecting Bobby Orr for protesting an obvious non call. Wally Harris was in my opinion the worst ref in NHL history. He didn't even try to be subtle about calling games one sided.
This game was one of the reasons they stopped selling bottled beer at games....
“Harris IS A BUM!!!”. Heard that many times at the Aud in Buffalo.
that referee should have been suspended indefinitely after that Nashville game
Donut Don Koharski 🍩
I said that too
Anytime Bruce hood reffed a hBs game at the forum in Montreal..painful how obvious his bias for the Canadiens were
Wes McCauley don't even get me started on
I gotta hear it!!!!
I kind of want to get you started now to hear this
Obvious to any Toronto fan.... obvious to any other hockey fan who has watched their team play the Leaf's when he officiates.
You ( Leafs ) have McCauley, we ( Habs ) have Chris Lee. 😅
He was forced to retire because the players were starting to hit him, and the next step was getting stabbed with the skate😂😂
My first thought when I saw the title was Tim Peel.
He recently made an unhinged Tweet
Auger, Peel, Kerry Fraser, Wes McCauley and Chris Lee are probably the worst refs on most people's list. The order depends if you're a fan of a team one of them targeted lol. I bet there were really bad refs before most games were televised. Clearly something happened the night Maurice Richard punched a linesman and a riot broke out.
@@wastefellow2569 What did he say?
@@fastjeff6, deleted
Anyone given the chance to appeal their "retirement" obviously didn't quit his job. 100% fired.
The worst thing about hockey games, or any other sport, is bad officiating. All calls should be assessed by the League in question and officials should be disciplined accordingly. The league should have the power to overturn a bad call during the game so that the officials don't ruin the game. That is my opinion and I truly believe that it would be a lot better for everyone to have officials accountable for their actions.
i remember being at a wings and I wanna say sharks game and a ref got hit and like spun around when he jumped over a puck but the players were there and took his legs out on accident. landed pretty awkwardly.
I'd like to add a positive note and name my favorite ref whom usually was very level headed and unbiased IMO: Don Van Massenhoven aka the ref with the mustache. I think the NHL lost a very important referee when he retired. Nowadays I'd say Eric Furlatt does a tremendous job, especially when he works on Canadiens games because he shows absolutely no sign of bias whatsoever. Very good ref.
I think the game is much faster than it ever was and it's very difficult for refs to see everything. IMO they should add one more ref, a retired veteran, who would watch the game just like we do on a screen and make the calls with some "electronic whistle" button or something, kinda like they already do when there's a goal and the puck somehow got out of the net without anyone noticing and the play continues. This or they add sensors to sticks, the puck, skates and helmets to keep track of player movement. But I'd rather have a more human aspect to it even if it meant more mistakes would be made.
DvM, as I recall, was standing behind the goal and a pass from behind the net went off his skate to a Canucks forward, Naslund I think, in the slot, who one-timed it for a goal. We called him Don Van Kickenpassen after that one.
@@brucemcintyre6088 So just one goal and you are bitter about it.
At the AHL level I’d say Terry Koharski. As an Ontario Reign fan I hated it when he refereed our games. The typical “Ref you suck” chant would change to “Koharski you suck or Koharski Sucks”
Koharski was terrible.
Nope its Kerry Fraser.
Yep, best hair among NHL refs though.
I agree with you. The funny thing is that I remember that in a poll of players one year he was rated as the best. Go figure.
Written 4/1/2024 Stephane Auger, a name that once stirred considerable controversy in the NHL, remains a figure of intrigue and discussion long after his departure from the league. Auger's career as an NHL referee was marked by incidents that sparked debates on officiating integrity, player-referee dynamics, and the pressures faced by officials in professional sports.....
Don't forget Don "Donut" Koharski...
2 years ago he commented on a play reviewing an offside live in a Montreal's game. I called to my girlfriend "that's clearly not an offside, Tatar never touched the puck before the other guy came out and at one point every player's skates are outside of the zone" he went on air and said "that is CLEARLY an offside, there's no way this goal will count. We have the perfect exemple of a goal that will be overturned by Toronto". Turns out I was right and he looked dumb. I know it was not his job to call offsides in the NHL but come on...
As an Ottawa Senators fan, Dean Morton on the ice guaranteed blown calls and inconsistent reffing every single game. Although not as notable as Auger who actively went above and beyond in the shit department, it was brutal just watching incompetency every single night
I’m not a sens fan, but Dean Morton was atrocious. St Pierre needs to go next. I have no idea how he has a job. Wes McCauley used to be my favorite but I feel like with the fame he’s gotten, he’s fallen in performance
not mentioning your sponsor outright is straightup illegal
2:10 - 3:38 is an ad. You're welcome.
Dan Marouelli belongs in this conversation
Agreed
You should go over the Tim Peele incident. Also, Wes McCauley and his history of horrible blown calls and phantom calls.
Or how about Justin St. Pierre? Here are a few quotes from NHL players when polled by The Athletic about the worst refs a few years back:
"St. Pierre may be the most arrogant human being I’ve ever seen. It’s honestly like he hates the players. He treats everybody like shit." - a Central Division player.
“[St. Pierre] is the worst. Bar none. Bar. None.” - a Metro Division player.
“I hate picking [St. Pierre] because he’ll probably be happy if he wins it.” - a Metro Division player.
As much as I could disagree with a referee's actions, I could never bring myself to wish injury to someone, especially a referee. His "Firing" is as far as it goes for me. He's gone, so the problem is solved.
I bet Stéphane Auger and Angel Hernandez are besties.
As an ice hockey player, I was asked to referee a number of matches, after 2 matches I called it a day because I wouldn't do anything right according to the people on the side. I tried to whistle as honestly and as well as possible, but apparently people don't know. on the side it is always better to have deep respect for the referees in all sports
Officials in all sports have a pretty thankless job so I try to be as understanding as possible. But this is blatant targeting and incompetence. Dudes an ass and the league was right to give him the cold shoulder
Bruce for sure, too. He let too many obvious penalties go when the Islanders were Playing The Rangers on The Night Before Christmas 🤶 Eve on 12/23/1978. One penalty inparticular Involving The Late Mike Bossy, who had Wayne Thomas beat, but he got tripped from behind. Hood didn't call a penalty or penalty shot. But both Trots, who was having the biggest night of his career, got revenge against Bruce Hood when he scored his 2nd goal of the night (5 total along with 3 points) on a breakaway, and Boss got his revenge by getting in between 2 Rangers and scoring his 2nd goal of the night. When then they did that, the message was you're not going to make them pay, we will.
He looks like a frenchman.
When I was coaching there was a ref who was notorious in the league. My dad was the head coach and he wasn't generally rude to the refs, but he stuck up for his players. I guess the ref didn't like the comments about his blatant one sided officiating (calling a trip on a player who wasn't on the ice, getting a call deficit of like 1-4, missing a blatant head shot right in front of him resulting in a concussion) and gave my dad hit "warning" before the team was even on the ice. Needless to say, he got kicked out for a comment by one of the other coaches, not even his own. Never had a problem with any other ref. Some of these guys let that miniscule amount of power go to their head.
Refs just following the script
I know who Jim Schoenfeld would pick
Ottawa used to give Auger a box of Joe Louis and a six pack of Pepsi to influence his reffing..
This guy was an embarrassment to the league. A total clown.
If you sued coderre for his chocolate bars, he' be flipping like a pancake.
He loved lots of pepper on his frogs.
After the NSH VCR fiasco and the fallout I watched the papers closely for the next year and a half. I think that was the last time Auger worked on the West Coast. He may have had another game or two scheduled after the Vancouver game before going back east, but never crossed the Rockies again to work an NHL game. It was almost a full year before he was even assigned to work a Canucks game again when they went east. Not mentioned in this video was that after the league said 'nothing to see here' following the Burrows alllegations, the Canucks released video they had sent to the NHL from cameras at the arena to show that there clearly was a conversation. Burrows would have been the zen master of all time had he quickly written down what happened after the warmup, tossed it into an envelope and given it to a reporter with the instructions to open it only after the game.
Game 7 in 2013 Blackhawks Vs Red Wings. Hawks climbed back into the series after going down 3 games to 1 and scored a beautiful goal with under 3 minutes left in the 3rd of game 7. It looked like it would be the game winning goal until it was called back because Brandon Saad got dumped into the bench and went to grab the Red Wings players jersey to brace for the fall (or he swung at him from his back) the referee literally called the penalty as the puck was entering the net and sure enough it was called back. It was a minor penalty for both teams and they are taught to wait to make the call if it’s behind the play & during a scoring chance. Instead he put his arm up as the shot was being taken and the Hawks were robbed. Luckily Seabrook called game in OT and the rest is history. Still the worst call I’ve ever seen.
That poor wife and 3 kids.
And here I thought this was a video on Chris Lee
THE one referee is Don "have another doughnut" Koharski.
What a joke! A commercial cloaked in an interesting story. You deserve a penalty for misleading. Game misconduct.
I was hoping you'd spend 11 minutes dumping on Don Koharski because I absolutely hated that guy back when I was watched a lot more hockey than I do now.
I question every ref, officiating flyers game 😂😂😂Lol
Damn, this should be a series. Every team has a story about being screwed in playoffs.
If you're a Leafs fan you got to believe it's Kerry Frazer
That Oshie hit though...
That's what real hating is all about! How come players have 5 cars? He'll hate on a player until he's broke, alone and has nothing like him.
I've never watched hockey before, besides fight compilations, so I'm just going to assume this guy is the Angel Hernandez of the hockey world before I watch this lol
Kevin Pollock, I’ll never forget 2017
Why would four frenchmen refereeing a game in Montreal be any worst than four english ones!!! It's effing insulting!
Auger is bad and in the HOF of bad refs along with Kerry Fraser, Tim Peele, Paul Stewart and Chris Lee.
One bad call that deserves more attention is from Andy Van Hellemond in the 1994 or 1995 Quebec Nordiques vs NY Rangers playoffs. The Nordiques were in possession of the puck for long enough time and scored a goal. Van Hellemond waived the goal off and gave a penalty. My memory is fading but I think the worst thing was that the penalty was given to NY but I could be wrong. Someone who reads this and knows more can enlighten me please.
Chill
I think I remember what you're talking about. It was Mats Sundin who had the puck. I do remember a horrible, horrible call made on Sundin, involving a goal, in the later Nordiques years. But IMO Van Hellemond was a pretty good ref compared to others. Just very strict sometimes, and he didn't seem like a guy who makes compromises heh.
Doan was always a crybaby whiner.
@@prman9984 He was lol. Can't believe they names this dude Captain Canada at some point.
There was some recent games where the cancuks have had stupid calls against them the 17 goal wild game had call on elias lindholm where it was "roughing" (it was most certainly not) but other games since then have gotten some attention among fans.
Yes that was the poster child call from that game. The score was the story but the reffing was the story behind the story.
When the Flyers were on HBO for their Winter Classic coverage there was a game in Montreal, where a Habs dman went down to try to take the puck from Jagr and completely missed and Jags just tripped over his body and they didn't call anything. Brayden Coburn asked him "why wasn't that a trip?" and the guy was like, "He was trying to go around him..." or something like that which made absolutely no sense. The Habs got a tick-tac call and Lavy even said, "If they score on this PP, it's going to be on you!" of course the Habs ended up scoring on the PP and Lavy lost it yelling "TYPICAL!! MONTREAL TYPICAL!!!"
Who was that guy?
The Joe West/ Angel Hernandez of the NHL. At least in hockey, you can "accidentally" get him back. They "get in the way of the play" a lot.
Why do leagues tolerate such poor refs?
NHL referring has been so inconsistent for year, it will never get fixed.
The problem is that it IS fixed.
I feel Trevor Hansen doesn’t get enough hate. All the playoff games with him I’ve seen with him have been rather atrocious

You haven’t watched a game in 40 years yet here you are watching videos and commenting in capitals. Who do you think is going to believe you?
Andy Van Hellemond & Bruce Hood (now that we are in the 2 ref system) but Kerry ‘the hair’ Fraser was amazing too, he hated wearing that lid! Where are all the good refs?
Burrows grabbed the Pred players stick then took a dive, that was a good call.

Best I've seen is Kelly Sutherland. Always calls a fair game and stays in the background.
I am from Montreal and watch my games in French but not on Saturdays (shown on TVA Sports). I switch to the English broadcast for those, because It's unwatchable.
Auger can barely put a sentence together and Patrick Lalime (Color guy), is just repeating the same 25 words in different order,,
"Ca, j'adore ca."
"J'adore ca, ca."
"Ca, ca, j'adore ."
"Ca, c'est ce que j'adore ca."
The entire team that works at TVA for the games are rejects from other channels that can barely speak French, eventhough it's their first language.
To be fair no one in Quebec speaks French. It's more of a bastardized Cajun.
It's gotten so bad when it comes to Refs/Umps saying a player said this or that, why don't they just put a microphone on every single official to record every encounter. That way there is an exact representation on what was actually said. Very similar to what almost every Police/Sheriff Depts now do. With all of the past "allegations" that the Officer said this or that or did this or that we now have video/audio proof of what actually went down. Sports can adopt that to protect both Players and Refs. They already "mic up" some players during games in every sport, do it for all of them already.
Referees caught intentionally swinging game outcomes should be heavily fined and fired. And if the evidence is too weak but its still sus, benched.
You're probably too young to remember Vern Buffy in the early '60's. Clueless.
Kerry Frazer. Terrible just a power tripper who used alot of hair spray .
The Nord VPN commercial is too long. I'm out.

Auger was a turd of a ref
I have a very long and extensive list of hated referees in the NHL ....it has been almost 30 years since the NHL has even had a "decent" ref! The NHL rule book ain't the greatest either!
my opinion 🦂
Lloyd " Flyers butt boy " Gilmour and his no call when Ed van Impe crosschecked Valeri Kharlomov into the middle of next week in the famous screw job against the Soviet team. That was the 2d worst call in history. The winner goes to Kerry " hairboy " Fraser for the no call when Gretzky highsticked Doug Gilmour for 40 stitches because the NHL was trying to market the game in the States and an all Canadian final would've been a financial disaster.
that is crazy, I always knew the games were rigged
All refs are terrible
Thanks for wasting my time with that NordVPN ad so I know never to buy their shit
when this happens the coach should remove their team to protest...its only 2 points
And still you don't name him?
Pretty cowardly!
Well... You're complaining about a bad ref.
Here in Germany we have an even more substantial problem. Especially in the second and third highest league we only have a few really good and fair refs.
The other ones... well. Let's just say they'll do everything to let their favourite team win.
Coaches can't complain.
If they do either way they might be banned from the following game and the rest of the season will get very hard because they don't need to fight one but two teams on the ice.
Up to that the calls are extremely inconsistent.
I've heard discussions about banning hip checks in total... not because they might be dangerous but because it's absolutely unpredictable if a ref will call an absolutely clean check or not.
