    I’m 66 and have been cycling constantly for the past 8 years as I don’t own a car and buses where I Iive are very few and far between . So all my shopping ,carrying a backpack with up to 35lbs of shopping in it, appointments and getting out are done on my hybrid Norco bike . This past year my back and hip have been bad and for the past 4 months I’ve only been managing to get out 2 times a week. I’d love an e-bike ,but on a simple state pension it’s going to take a bit of saving .E- bikes are not cheating , having one for me would keep me being able to be independent and get around ,they are great for those of us that are losing the ability to ride a normal bike . No I don’t want a motorbike ,I want to continue cycling as long as I can.

      I'm 69 and after I came back from riding the Carreterra Austral I bought a TSDZ2 motor for 320€ and fitted it to my bike so that i can continue to include cycling in my lifestyle. Up and down using meat power was ok in Chile, but here at home my shopping trip involves a 500 metre climb over 10km, so I reckon it's not "cheating". If I go off to do another road trip I will probably take the motor off, though.

    I used to commute between Cardiff and Bridgend on a Cube ebike with a Bosch 500 system. Had to recharge in work. Even with minimum help it could only manage 65km with 800m of climb. (22miles/36km each way). Constant speed about 25kph was normal. The climbs ate the battery.
    Really pleased these road ebikes are doing so much better.

    With the ebikemotion system you can configure the motor to switch on or off according to heart rate threshold instead of target speed so which was used here because if overall heart rate was managed the motor wouldn't be used as often which would increase range. Was looking at X35 options last year, on an Orbea, Bianchi and Ribble and with one booster they were giving ranges of ~140 km and to get anywhere near ~250 km you'd need two external batteries.

    You caught my attention because you are riding a Cannondale with a Bosch. I have a friend who is looking at an electric bike. I spotted a Cannondale at a somewhat local retailer (MEC.ca) with a Bosch middrive and with a range claim of 240km and a front derailleur. With an extender battery, the skies the limit. I don't think electric bikes are cheating as I meet a women on this beautiful rail trail on Vancouver Island and she justified her use of an an electric bike because without it she wouldn't have been there. Her reasoning was good enough for me. When I get old I will consider it. I think the electric bikes with thumb throttles are dangerous but those that use a torsion sensor are fine.

    What I like about eBikes is allowing older folks maybe with dodgy joints the opportunity to keep riding longer distances and to not fear hills or strong headwinds in group rides. At lowest power settings that 50 watts or so is a benefit at the margins that can make the difference between having fun and a tough slog. For me I am riding longer distances, for the most rides are 50% longer than what I did in younger days and at higher speeds 27 to 33 kmph versus 22-25, mostly at the lowest 50 watt setting. Way more fun than I've had in years on a bike. You don’t need an expensive bike either - a 250 watt hub motor conversion kit and 200 watt hour battery can be had for 500 or so. Just convert your old bike.

For the odd occasion I plan to go further I’d love an extender but not good value. I wonder why retailers don’t offer a rental scheme for the extender.. I used ones from Light Bicycle in 38mm depth size which is the max I would go for the lacing to work. The front wheel could be whatever spoke count you like, 24h or 28h would be fine. The model I went with is the WR38 which is also a super wide rim at 25mm and makes a 28mm tires measure out to 30mm for a super comfy ride at low PSI

    I was one of the first people to ride an ebike in a long-distance Audax event (the first Mile Failte 8 years ago) I was a lot heavier and less fit, and it was a lot hillier, so I could only manage 100k or so on a similar battery capacity and had a stop twice during the day to recharge. Nor did it help that I'd finished building the bike only a few days before, and it was only my second such ride that required night navigation (I got lost the first time too). But I did it.
    When calculating range for such events it's better to think in terms of feet climbed rather than miles ridden. Say your ebike weighs 5kg more than an unassisted setup: you would you would need to use one watt hour of battery capacity for every 100 feet of climbing just to break even. So, climbing say 10000 feet in 300k and using 500 watt hours of battery is much like riding without 25kg of baggage. I't still work, but the help comes when you need it most.

    As is mentioned at the end of this, ~80% of drag comes from the rider. That in mind, saving probably 0.002% by having a profiled seat-post rather than a good old 27.2 mm alu post is nothing but stupid, considering the wealth of things you can no longer clamp on it. T'other thing that annoys me, not just with this bike but with virtually every eBike, is that the manufacturers feel free to take over one of your bottle cages. When I was doing Audax, and even now that I'm not, I liked to ride with plain water up front and sports drink in the back bottle. Not that I've motorized one of my bikes, a 4-hour stint at 30°C in summer without that back bottle is begging for cramp.

      A smaller frame has a shorter head tube and is therefore lower at the front (than in this case the XL). We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. czcams.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!

Partial charges don't count as a cycle so if you charge at 75% consistently, it would take 3 charges to equal one cycle. Unless you plan to keep the bike for 10 years plus or do tens of thousands of kms per year, I think the battery will last longer than you plan to keep it.

    That's amazing for an e-bike, but what I really want to know is how did you get back? Did you ride 300km again??

    Did I understood it right that the motor was off when ur speed is above 25kmh? Then no wonder the battery lasted so long, probably it was used only in hills, no flats or down.

    Should have used aero bars since wind resistance is a watt killer.

      @Wooly Chewbakker they minimize frontal area. You wouldn't ride in drops with aero bars.

      @Wooly Chewbakker your missing the point I mean triathlon clip on aero bars no aero drop bars. I don't care about your video. Think triathlon setup, I know it's more aerodynamic and rider drag causes most watts lost.

    Thank you for the range test. A 25km/h assist threshold is a joke. I understand 45km/h max. assist (still a bit insufficient in some cases), but 25km/h… Disgusting.

    • @waynosfotos
      @waynosfotos Před 3 lety +3

      They appear to be going back to hub motors due to the chain alignment problems with standard two by systems. Many of the mid drives have a wider bottom bracket, focus redesigned a rear hub with DT swiss to fit the mid drive and maintain alignment, but then makes it proprietary.

    I think if legislation lifted the speed limit on e-bikes to 30 kmph, they would be flying off the shelves like hot cakes. Amator cyclists would have a normal road bike and an e-bike in their sheds.

  • @foodsafety5875
    @foodsafety5875 Před 3 lety +1

    This is pure misinformation! You cannot do 300km with one charge of such a rather small battery. The only way is to have it at such a low level that litterally do not feel any help at all especially in the uphills. Ebiking means that you cycle without standing up, without seawting at at all or feel tired. That was not e-biking!

    • @timcorso6337
      @timcorso6337 Před 3 lety +2

      Not sure I understand you. Were you watching the same video as me? He clearly stated that he would need, and then used two batteries to complete the distance. Also I don't recognise your definition of "e-biking". Riding an electrically assisted ebike is by definition e-biking no matter if you're sweating, standing on the peddles or doing crazy jumps. May be you're being ironic? Sorry if I missed that..

    • @foodsafety5875
      @foodsafety5875 Před 3 lety +2

      @@timcorso6337 How else can I say it? There is no ebike on the world that does 300km with just a two full charge butteries. It is even worse when the bike of the video has such a small (capacity-wise) batteries. Even with 4 batteries you cannot do 300km! (unless you are 50kg and give the lowest e-assistance which is useless).

    • @foodsafety5875
      @foodsafety5875 Před 2 lety

      @Wooly Chewbakker Thank you for the response. We need to agree first that there is not only one ebiking. Normally the ebiking should assist you in achieving speed always >25km/h with the minimum effort (no standing-up cycling in the hills, no effort, no tiredness, etc.). I did not see this in the video. I have an ebike with 840Wh and it barely does 30km. How on earth you can do 300km with these two much smaller batteries. It is practically impossible unless your muscles undertake most of the work but this is not ebiking.

    • @foodsafety5875
      @foodsafety5875 Před 2 lety

      @Wooly Chewbakker These are not ebikes and the settings that you have described are a joke. This is not the purpose of an ebike! This is why the number that you and the video creator do not make any sense at all and certainly is misinformation to the readers. It is as if you have bought a Ferrari and you drive it at 50km/h and then make a statement about its amazing fuel consumption and how far you can go with one tank.
