As an ex-racing cyclist, I can affirm that the majority of drivers NEVER look for cyclists. YOU didn't get taught about cyclist on your twelve lessons before passing a very limited test of basic competence.
I have had drivers see me, and still pull out, halfway, into my path. Going at 30 mph, it is difficult to stop in 4 metres.

I have always ridden, with lights on, day and night. When Sweden made it a law to have sidelights on, in bad weather, I copied it in Britain. I was always shouted at, "Your lights are on, mate". Imagine what it was like, when Sweden passed a law making it compulsory to have dipped headlights instead of sidelights. Britain has always been decades behind Europe on car safety, and cycles. Even today, drivers don't obey the Construction and Use Regulations, amended October 1980.

She was arrested, but later released without charge when it was established that he was; drunk, wearing all grey, on a black bike with no lights, and the angle of the bend was such that he was hidden by the A Pillar.
