Welcome to my review of Weihenstephaner's Heffweissbier Dunkel! In this video, we take a closer look at one of Germany's most iconic beers, and explore the history and tradition behind the Weihenstephan Brewery.
As the oldest brewery in the world, dating back to 1040, Weihenstephaner has a long and storied history. Located on the grounds of the Weihenstephan Abbey in Bavaria, the brewery is known for producing a range of traditional German beers, including wheat beers, lagers, and bocks.
The Heffweissbier Dunkel is a particularly special beer from Weihenstephaner. Made with a combination of barley malt, wheat malt, and hops, and fermented with a special yeast strain, this dark wheat beer is known for its rich, malty flavour and aromas of banana, clove, and toasted bread.
Join me as I take a sip of history and explore the world of Weihenstephaner's Heffweissbier Dunkel. Cheers!

They certainly do a good job throughout their range! Always a hard one to ignore when I see it. Cheers!

Traditionally, when pouring a Hefeweizen from the bottle, a few centilitres of the beer are not poured directly but used to loosen the brewer's yeast at the bottom by turning the bottle vertically back and forth between the hands so that it can also be tipped into the glass. This increases and improves the aroma content. This is how every type of Bavarian wheat beer produced by bottle fermentation is handled.

That is interesting, thank you! In the UK, traditionally we have always favoured clear beers, and as a result we habitually leave the end of the bottles and try to keep the yeast out of the glass when a beer is bottle conditioned. I will give this a try next time, thank you!

@@TheCrumbyBeard The only wheat beers that do not contain yeast in the bottle are the Kristallweizen and non-Bavarian types/varieties. There is Schöfferhofer Weizen, which is a wannabe Bavarian wheat beer from Frankfurt, and Berliner Weisse. The latter is a story in itself and is probably the only original wheat beer that is not of Bavarian origin or inspired by it. It tastes completely different and has a strong bitter note, which is why it is often drunk with a "shot", i.e. with raspberry or sweet woodruff syrup. It's hard to believe, but we Germans also drink mixed beer drinks.

@@DJKLProductions that’s fascinating, thank you! We are starting to see a lot of flavoured weissbier and similar styles in the UK right now, it’s proving very popular indeed! I filmed another weissbier video yesterday so sadly did not pour properly so may explain why I struggled with some taste and aroma. I may need to re-do that one!

@@TheCrumbyBeard I know that as a beer enthusiast you are anxious to do everything correctly, but don’t force yourself. It certainly won't be your last glass of wheat beer. Otherwise, how would you know about the tradition? I mean, even within Germany, many are not familiar with the "correct" way of pouring (Bavarian) wheat beer.

That is very true. I may edit this information in to the video so others can learn along with me. I really appreciate the information you've given - every day is a school day!
