- Turn your amps to 11! Or in this case, maybe just 7 because that’s how many Things we’ve got for you about your favorite fake metal band, Spinal Tap. The Rob Reiner, mockumentary inventing all timer has been influencing comedy on the big screen and TV since the rockers first got lost backstage in 1984. Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and a revolving door of combustible drummers left their mark on music as well, so without further ado, here are 7 Things You Didn’t Know About Spinal Tap… probably.
From just who actually owns the Spinal Tap IP and why the band made seemingly random appearances for years, to who could actually make the stacked cast of veteran improvisers laugh, the production of This Is Spinal Tap was a rush job in the end. Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean continued to refine the art form of the mockumentary but everything from The Office and Parks and Rec, to metal comedies like Tenacious D and even The Foo Fighters Studio 666, one thing everybody knows is Spinal Tap is one of the best of all time.
This episode was written and edited by Tom Jorgensen.

Really should have been 11 things you didn't know.
But this one goes to 11.
😂🤣😂
11/11
With 111 likes. Lol
AAAAHAHAHAAA!!
The in-character DVD commentary is arguably funnier than the movie. Netflix needs to start putting commentaries as audio options!
Or you could go buy the movie?.....or pirate it 🙈🙉🙊
It's like getting a whole extra movie.
I'd say it's equally funny. Like a two-part harmony.
It’s so good!!
Buy the blu ray! Physical media is the way to go.
This list should go to 11!
"He died, he choked on vomit.
But it wasn't his vomit.
Really don't know who's vomit it was."
Oh man I loved that movie.
You can't really dust for vomit
@@dontbefatuousjeffrey2494 the police said it was one of things that was best left unsolved, you know
When I was in high school I loaned my VHS copy of This Is Spinal Tap (recorded off of HBO) to my sister, telling her how hilarious it was. She called me a couple of days later and told me I must have given her the wrong tape. This one had a documentary about some rock band on it.
Despite being a first-time director at that time. Rob Reiner really knows what he was doing
Give the drummer a sequel docu. He'll be around for a long time. I can feel it.
I'm friends with Ric Parnel, he'll be thrilled to hear you say that!
@@PatriotRebel can you tell him I absolutely love his work.
@@campbellmanderson943 Unfortunatly Ric passed away and went to the Great Gig in the Sky back in May.
How could you have a Spinal Tap list video that DOESN"T go up to 11 ?!?!?!
even if they had skipped 8-10... might have been funnier than some of the other gags they did
I love when they were chatting to Metallica on the Metallica Documentary at Freddies concert and they say "Where did you get the idea for a totally black album Mr Metallica representative"
So many quirks the movie leaves you with. I have never been able to cross my arms unselfconsciously again in my life
The black thumbnail is genius! 😂😂😂
Cinematographer Smokler NOT getting the humour probably made the filming even more realistic, and in turn, much funnier.
Wait, my brother didn't tell me that he was a Spinal Tap member. GODDAMN CHUCK!
Which is odd, considering how he always wanted to prove he was better than you...
Fun fact: while shank hall exists in Milwaukee today, it didn't when the movie came out. From what I'm told the current shank hall got its name from the movie.
Yep: shankhall.com/faq.php They actually write it on their damn website.
@@ragzaugustus gone by it many times, but never thought to check the site
@@ragzaugustus That is hilarious.
*#8 ─ Remember the Rutles.¹*
_"Selling the mockumentary to audiences before that was a thing was tough"_
··•✺•··
¹ ─ aka _"All You Need Is Cash"_ from 1978. Though it started as a mid-70s sketch by Eric Idle and Neil Innes, it became a beloved television film. _Spinal Tap's_ experiences mirror that of _The Rutles_ in a number of ways (q.v., releasing music and actually touring for decades).
I wanna see a Spinal Tap reunion concert that starts when them all getting pushed out in wheelchairs, and by the end, they're all dead in ridiculous ways. ROCK AND ROOOOOOOLLLL!!!!!
They did do a concert. I saw it. It was done acoustically. They also did the songs from A Mighty Wind. Then they did a Q and A session. It was great.
My friends and I saw this in the theater and the soundtrack was the first vinyl album I ever bought. We LOVED it and I still do.
Listen, we'd love to stand around and chat, but we've gotta sit in the lobby and wait for the limo. RIP Howard.
Marty DiBergi = Martin Scorsese(Marty) + Brian De Palma(Di) + Steven Spielberg(Berg)
These were Rob Reiner's favorite directors.
Also it rhymes with Fellini.
It'll probably change, but I love that the Smell the Glove cover is the thumbnail
On BBC videos on their news Channel the volume goes up to 11.
Real Spinal Tap fans from the 1970s know that Smell the Glove was a slap in the face of their earlier work.
Stevie Stiletto's Smell the Sock would be more of a kick to the face.
Did they try to sell out or something?
Most blokes when they write a list, they'll be going to 7.
But when you're on 7 and you need that extra push, where can you go?
Ok. I'll bite.
Is it one after ten?
Dammit! There were 11 "likes" on this comment before I hit the button. 😂
The thumbnail is too perfect.
Christopher Guest's laugh during "Shit Sandwich" was genuine. The actors didn't know that was even coming so he nearly lost it when the line was delivered. Too good!
You really couldn't come up with four more things so that this would go to 11?
When I heard about a documentary called "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" if I wasn't already aware Anvil was a real band I would have assumed it was some kind of spiritual remake of Spinal Tap.
This Is Spinal Tap - the most groundbreaking comedy of all time
"A Mighty Wind" is kind of a pseudo-sequel to "This Is Spinal Tap", following the band The Folksmen (also portrayed by Guest, McKean, and Shearer) who were Spinal Tap's opening act when they did their tour.
I love that movie so much. Prefer it oeven over Best in Show. The music is phenomenal.
But that movie wasn't funny. At all.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 I disagree. Humor is like ice cream: it comes in many different flavors. You're the type of person who only likes chocolate. That's fine, chocolate is good, I like chocolate too! But I like other flavors also.
It baffles me how many people don't know about the sequel "The Return of Spinal Tap" that came out in 1992. The Folksmen, appear in the film, years before they made the film "A Mighty Wind". You can check it out here while the link lasts; czcams.com/video/6-yrllux-2w/video.html&ab_channel=TheRetroForge
I was about halfway thru "A Mighty Wind" when the epiphany hit me like a ton of bricks: "This is a Spinal Tap sequel!.... done in Folk music genre!" I just about fell off my couch
It's a crime how underrated Spinal tap is
Underrated? When have you ever heard somebody rating it lower than it deserves? Do you even know what underrated means?
@@reidflemingworldstoughestm1394 it's not taked about or watched by people nowadays.
And those who have heard of it aren't rushing to see it.
- UNDERRATED
@@jonLK47 Exactly. Trouble is, that isn't underrated. Underappreciated or unknown would work very well, or the way you just described it, but not underrated. You can tell it isn't underrated because it doesn't involve a rating.
This one goes to 11!
One of the best movies of all time
The year 1984 brought us not one - but two incredibly memorable cult-classic, masterpiece comedies:
1) This is Spinal Tap
2) The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension
_"What's that watermelon doing there?"_
Somebody's thumbnail game is on fucking point.
I did actual watch this in theaters with a pack of young-toughs sitting ahead of me upset the movie was delivering irony and sarcasm they didn’t grok… thinking it was a documentary. Good times.
I remember a rumor that was about them auditioning a new drummer for the sequel.
What's strange is that their "bizarre gardening accident" came 10 years before Jeff Porcaro died. I think his had to do with coke more than pesticide, but he was out spraying when he got sick.
Coke isn't dose sensitive for OD. btw Can happen any time at any amount.
Rumoured to be based on the band Saxon. They also had a folk band, with the film a mighty wind. Best of all they often used The Folksmen as a warm-up band, to a bemused Tap audience who only wanted to hear heavy metal music. Often extending the warm-up act saying Tap had been delayed ;-)
Heh heh.
The black thumbnail is greatly appreciated.
This Is Spinal Tap!!!
Another fact, they have legitimately released a few albums under the Spinal Tap name.
Australian band You Am I did concerts playing Spinal Tap songs with Taps consent.
It is a real band.
Fun fact: Clint Gage wasn't really upset. It was satire. In fact, Clint Gage isn't even his real name. He's really an actor named Rollo Tomasi who loves to improv as his Clint Gage narrator character.
Classic flick! Missed so much while laughing hysterically in a Madison theater, that we needed about 5 more viewings before we actually heard all the great lines!!
Did you notice Some Kind of Monster" was just as funny?
SMELL THE GLOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
do one on Bad News next from The Comic Strip presents
Thanks for including the Shark Sandwich scene...not quoted nearly as often as many of the other movie scenes but just as funny.
When you said "The Office" it feels slightly hurtful to show the US version when Ricky Gervais basically "invented" the idea with the UK one...
Thankfully I feel people are getting more exposure to British television in this day and age, but it shouldn't be forgotten that Ricky and Stephen were both credited as creators and produced the US version as well.¹ So it's not like it was stolen. They just took their idea to the US and retooled it for American audiences. As a result, made $140 million. 💰
··•✺•··
¹ ─ I'm pretty sure they wrote an episode or two as well.
Don’t get me wrong, Office UK looks way more my style, but it has 14 episodes and the US version has 201... not really a mystery why it’s talked about more.
@@expendableindigo9639 It's talked about more because it's an American show. Like everything in America that's shoved down our face holes.

These go to eleven
I thought this series was over !
Funniest movie I ever saw.
Spinal Tap, Repo Man, Life of Brian, And Borat. Pardon me, Bow Rat.
Say bow-rat again
The beginning of mockumentaries Lol... American Zombie is also among my favorites.
Overall, I think it’s the funniest movie ever.
Try The Rocker. It's got Rainn Wilson. Very funny movie. Great extras
Guest is a freaking genius, love all his films. Wish he would make another...
This movie was amazing Christopher Guest , Harry Sheer and Michael Mickean are always so one of most talented comedians.
One of the best things in life.
Spinal Taps A Chord.
I saw ST live on that '92 tour in D.C. So fun.
This is one of the greatest movie-docs-mocks ever!I love you Nigel and David
Mick Fleetwood once tried out to be their drummer. True story.
The fact he didn't make the cut is probably why he's alive today.
Spinal Tap isn't a real band?
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
Well, they're a real band NOW. They are really playing.
They're going to release a sequel soon! I wonder how they'll pull it off since Rock isn't in the spotlight anymore?
This movie came out when I was really young and until I was a teen, I thought it was a real band lol.
They are now, tho.
That movie still makes me laugh my pants off
I'm 41 years old and I just found out because of this video that Spinal Tap isn't a real band. I always wondered how they got away with making a mockumentary without being sued by the band. I can't believe it took me this long to finally get it.
Sharp overly fast speaking over music in a voice I'm not endeared to is quite difficult. I tried, I really did. I did like the mocu-experimentation. Maybe better next time.
11 11 11 11 !
That WAS a good factoid. The sign of the cross.....but in brahnn
Favorite moment was Billy Crystal cameo! "Mime is money!!"
Where is CLINT? He has always done, and always will be the voice of 7 Things You Didn't Know. What is with CZcams Channels and just swapping out personalities for unknowns?
Do one about Airplane!
Loved the editing and writing of the video. Just kinda suits the film
Movies like “Bow Rat” 😂
All this was recorded in dubly 😂
Missed the great joke of making it a top 8 list. Why 8? Because we take it a step further.
ah yes. Bow-Rat. Such a classic.
I was talking to my dad one day about Spinal Tap. Sadly, I forget how the whole conversation went, but he was sure they were a real band as he saw their music videos on MTV. He probably heard them on the radio too. I'm sure plenty of people thought the same thing.
It just makes it all the more hilarious 😂 spinal tap was on MTV as a gag but people probably took it seriously 🤣 the film is a masterpiece! I can see why congress had to register it lol it's right up there with George Orwell causing a public panic 😆
They are now, tho.
The Stonehenge scene on their gig. Nothing beats that. As a cultural significance I truly believe that “This is spinal tap” rivals 2001 A space odyssey, The Godfather and The French Connection
The gospel according to Spinal Tap. Rock and religion riding in the same cart😂
Has forensic science finally reached the point where one can dust vomit for prints?
Finally been missing 7 things
Spinal Tap is a real band. Yes the "documentary" was about a fictional band made up of actors. But they were kinda cool and people started digging their music. So they toured. Several times. If they went on tour they're a band. A comedy band to be sure but a band nonetheless.
1:46
I've heard of "charging an arm and a leg." What does it mean to charge heads, though? Sounds far more expensive! 😜
technically because Spinal Tap has put out published recorded music, and done live shows, they are an actual band. similar to GWAR and Gorillaz, it's played for theatrics...but no one looks at Gorillaz and says "yep, a 2 dimensional character is really playing music rn. no orchestra or members of the Clash....it's just a total coincidence that the singer sounds EXACTLY like the dude from Blur" and no one sees a GWAR live show and thinks "they really just killed Donald Trump, and fed Joe Bidden to a space worm"...like it's an understood thing that these projects are taking the rock n roll tropes and elevating them theatrically to a point of high camp...even art in the truest sense.
however, it is important to make the distinction that there is a difference between Spinal Tap the manufactured fake band for the mockumentary "This Is: Spinal Tap" and the REAL band Spinal Tap which was a marketing ply (strictly to sell the film, and retain IP rights) that has gotten....a little out of hand with how extreme the marketing push has gone. hey, William Castle could make a gimmick work, and lets not forget the storied history of The Monkees.
This needs to be 1 louder
So what happened to this series? It’s been 11 months since this video, and it’s still the most recent X Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know entry.
1:15 Are we all just going to ignore how he mispronounced Borat as Bow-rat? 👀
see, this is where I get confused thinking Michael McKean is dead, when in fact, his character is dead on Better Call Saul.
Cinefix, you should do one on Repo Man. Kids today, they need to know about Repo Man.
The sequel is coming!
I miss Clint’s narration!
Clicked the video, heard it wasn't Clint, clicked away.
Bo-Rat
Spinal Tap maybe one of the movie that i tried so hard to like based on hype opinion on the internet but somehow i endup feeling "that's okay". But after saw this viedo i might give another shot.
At this point in history, much like Citizen Kane, its genius is watered down by ironically how genius it was. SO much of the satirical style has seeped into every genre, and so much of the band's 'antics' have been rendered commonplace by the actual antics of bands and our increasing knowledge of said antics.
Difference between seeing an airplane take off from the airport today and seeing the exact same thing 150 years ago.
I was in the same boat but it's one of my favorites now. There's a lot of buried treasure in this one. Every scene has intention.
What about the Hogwarts reference at the end of the movie. A place where pale boys go to school
Turn it up to 11
TRES Cool/Heavy
"Bowrat"?!?!?!?!
Wait, how did he just pronounce Borat?
Like one of them necks of red would say it.
The hosts are the definition of "you are not funny."
Like most things these day's ☹️
I'll be honest, I know it was a fake documentary. I didn't know there was no such band.
