The ENFP Analyst - A Different Perspective

  • The ENFP is often portrayed as a somewhat hyperactive social butterfly - in reality, such ENFPs are more the exception than the norm.
The Extraverted Thinking of the ENFP tends to be underestimated, and as such the highly analytical nature of this personality type tends to pass under the pop psychology radar. As a result of this, people of this type tend to receive 'judging' results such as INFJ and ESTJ from personality tests as much as their actual type.

    About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

I’d just like to add! That when you said ENFPs can come across as an INFJ and other types despite the fact that they are technically ENFP. It’s probably why our empathy levels are so high because we look at the morality of individuals first and their actions after so we can see ourselves in every person in some sort of way. Which in a way makes us pschoanalytical and extremely adaptable. We see ourselves in other people, easily connecting why people would act or behave in certain ways. ENFPs can chameleon at times to be other types because they relate to all types at least at one time in their life and never forget it.

@@LaniBeanzYES. I often wonder if this trope is just rampant by people who aren't under the surface sort of people. They take people at face value in which you see an enfp being cheerful and bright and idealistic and that's that. We aren't the best at articulating our ideas when emotions are high and are better writing our thoughts down or needing to think for a bit before speaking, but we are thinking very deeply and complexly!! Perceiving strong ideas and concepts and reaching profound conclusions!! Sometimes I often have to catch myself allowing myself to be the 'dumb' person in a group just to keep peace and not be overwhelming with all the thoughts and ideas I really have going on underneath. Enfps are ambiverts/introverts where they have this bubbly exterior as a means of, 'lets get this conversation with a stranger over pleasantly, so I can go back to what thoughts I was doing on my own!'
If you aren't an under the surface sort of person and think an enfp is just an airhead social butterfly, that's all an enfp is going to show you! The deeper sides to themselves are kept safe and given to those they trust with their deep thoughts, which is why Enfps "collect introverts" cause ENFPs are just more socially capable introverts, and find deeper connections with deeper introverted personalities who also like under the surface sort of relationships!

very true!!!! im enfp.....sometimes i lose touch with feeling. mostly im all about gathering info, ideas, creating and organizing those ideas and info, analyzing and organizing in categories, searching patterns and creating connections and building my own structure.....in extreme details, with rational application...so much so that i can sit in library with books and computer for 8-10 hours or i can talk for hours discussing ideas without getting tired. It energizes me relaxes me greatly. sometimes when there is noone to discuss, i talk to myself and have a long conversation until i relax. :) I never felt im an extrovert but i am quite gregarious when i'm in a group. I love crowds and i like to be very active and initiating within a group. Still I like my own times for endless mental exploration where i learn and analyze so that later i can go and help others with that knowledge. My hobby is to give advice and mostly people reach upto me in my lonely tower to get my advice. i have my own philosophy, sayings and theories for everything. i have hundreds of friends still im mostly alone in my tower. in another word, im everywhere. lolz. i consider myself an ambivert in true sense coz while interacting with others, i become quite flamboyant, and extroverted and at other times when i am alone, i fit in the description of an introvert. but thats my researching mode, i still need to get my message out. Your video is extremely accurate.

I'm happy go lucky, when necessary, but I analyze all day long--to a fault sometimes, way more than I "Feel" like being jolly lol. It's almost like I'm jolly around people (in fact, most people's descriptions of me would be happy go lucky honestly), but when I'm by myself, all I do is either contemplate about things, analyzing them in my head, or research videos, and writings, to then analyze. I feel more at ease, doing the latter, than being happy go lucky, but I thoroughly enjoy both. Wow, thank you very much for laying that out. I have tested as an ENFP many times over. Other sources were able to get me into the ballpark to understand myself. But now, I think I found my place on the field. I was very suspicious about the social butterfly and spontaneous stuff. I understand why others may think I am spontaneous. My thoughts may seem spontaneous (ideas just happen, and I express them), but I don't do anything until I perform long analysis, internal deliberation, and somewhat detailed planning, allowing room for improvisation. Yes, I start many projects, but I don't leave them because of boredom. I put them on hold because I have determined that something is an immediate priority based on holistic considerations. But the projects do get completed. I have ten or more books open at once. I just know that certain days I will not truly absorb the information because my interest shifted that day, week, or month. But the books get finished -- with understanding. This video nailed it.

We're walking meta-interpreters; interpreters of interpretations between everything. I feel like that might be the best way to simply put ENFPs.
For example, you're probably an ENFP who is on a youtube voyage rn trying to get different explanations of yourself. You are then taking all of those, connecting the points between explanations, events, people, feelings, behaviors and ideas. Things are making more and more sense, you can really feel the synapses connecting in your brain. You use people's frameworks of ENFP to understand other other's frameworks of ENFP. This is meta interpretation, interpretations of interpretations based on interpretations, your own analysis, and your self image of everything.
People who are more linear and organized in their thinking, their brain is like a tree. ENFPs and other similar types have a brain like a spider web. In a web, every idea is connected to every other idea. This makes us phenomenal at making connections between ideas, and also immensely incomprehensibly imaginative. Tree brains, all 'branches' are connected, but only by the other branches, and not directly to each other. This makes them much more organized and concrete in their thinking, but with fewer connections between each idea.
    yeah.

You absolutely nailed it! Thanks for the more thoughtful, in depth description of the ENFP. I have taken multiple tests and ENFP is always my outcome yet I can't relate to the stereotype of constant novelty/thrill seeking and need for new exciting experiences. I consider myself very grounded and at times a homebody yet there is also a strong desire to connect with a certain few core friends and family. It's a balancing act.. I can go out roller skating or dancing with friends, be the life of the party and thoroughly enjoy it but then a part of me can't wait to be alone, watch videos like this, write down my thoughts and process the pattern and connection of it all. Some people have laughed when I said I was part introvert but those who really know me understand both people and time in solitude recharge the batteries. Regardless of what function is dominant there is always a need for a bigger purpose and to figure out how it plays in the grand scheme. A teacher once described it as meaning making intelligence. I myself have been struggling to understand my type because of the stereotypes. I do feel at home with ENFP, but there is also a lot of things that I don't agree on. Like for example that ENFPs love everyone and are always kind. Or that we are master procrastinators and never get anything done. Or that we are these extroverted unicorns who feel a lot and have no logic.
For me these are not true and it has been confusing me. I'm highly empathetic, but my logic is strong and more often than not logic is the one I base my decisions on. I recognize my feelings and why I feel in certain way, but I can use my logic to make decisions that are best for me and for my surroundings. Just because I'm empathetic doesn't make me an idiot.
I usually see the bigger picture and sometimes struggle to have solid opinion in subjects that have too many sides on them. Like for example politics are really hard for me because I feel like I can see the bigger picture, but every side has valid points and understandable reasons for those opinions. These questions of course only give me hardships when they don't touch on things that I have strong values on.
I also struggle with this idea that ENFPs are clumsy, unsystematic and procrastinate all the time, because even though sometimes my trail of thought might seem weird for others and my actions might seem unsystematic, almost everything I do and act upon has logic and plans behind them. I use calendars, planners, spreadsheets and notes to plan my life because I can't get things done if I don't plan them first. I'm also usually the leader and the coordinator in group projects because I can see in which order and timeframe things have to be done. I'm good at planning what others need to do and making sure that they do their tasks in time. I've also found that people seem to like me as a leader because I'm ready to help them when they need help. Once again even though I'm empathetic, I still make sure everyone does their part and that every project is handled like it should.
I'm also not this social butterfly, even tho I do enjoy social working. I still need a lot of me time and for example prefer to live alone. I'm more than okey with being alone for weeks, but I also enjoy being with people. I enjoy talking and expressing my thoughts and feelings through talking, but I also like writing and thinking by myself. When I speak, I usually do it with confidence but also humility to show that people are welcome to challenge my opinions and that they are not supreme to other opinions. I really love to be challenged and it also kinda gives me a permission to show my confident and hard side which is usually hidden beneath my always laughing soft side.
I sometimes get frustrated because I've seen many people claim to be ENFP, but they have no logic at all. They don't seem to be able to see the bigger picture and just act upon feelings. Then they get angry at others because they are not acting empathetic enough as if that's a proof that they are not empathetic. The more time I spend in ENFP groups the more I wonder if I'm mistyped. I think I'll look at ENTP side next to see if that maybe fits me better.
Anyway, thanks for the video! It was really eye-opening! 😊
In the end, I'm still not sure if I'm ENFP or not. I need more information about the functions and how they mix together.

Yes! Yes! Yes! This is exactly how I feel and I don't know how to describe it better than what you did. I am an ENFP but I also have attention deficit disorder and I have the hyperactive part of that. So it does make me seem very social butterfly like. But actually I am not that way on the inside. I do that to make others feel warm and welcome. I want people to feel happy around me because that makes me feel happy. But I actually don't always want to hang out with people or even talk to them. I like being by myself and I think I am good company. Many of the things that you said resonated with me and I think I need to watch this video over again. Anyway it was an accurate description of how I feel. Especially when it comes to my core beliefs .Excellent! Thank you! I might actually use this video to help with the people understand me better.

Sir, thank you so much for this. Your linking Ne to Te is paradigm shattering for me. It’s what I’ve always observed in myself but didn’t quite understand as I thought this was disregarding where Fi falls in the stack. Really great stuff. I always see enfps as these incessant organizers and categorizers of more subtle and numinous data. I often find a lot of stereotypically ENFP types to be really annoying, and it might be because they are not enfps at all. An enfp is very serious about putting concepts into buckets so he can make use of them lol

This is the second enfp video I've seen of yours, immediately following the first so back to back, and during both, you've completely changed the way I view my own self worth in a positive way. I never knew why I thought the way I do, and having been called annoying told I talked to much, shut up, too many questions, all of the things you might say if you want to snuff out the creativity and highly instinctive wonderment of a child and turn their naturally optimistic view of the world into a very cold and uncomfortable one.. And it's taken me till 31 years old to find, learn, and understand that I shouldn't have had to been subjected to that treatment. And all these years later I find myself drawn to uncovering all things ideas and concepts related to existential philosophy. I knew for sure I saw the world very analytically, always pondering the deeper questions, deeper than the ones other people would consider deep. You've made me very happy and broke open the lock I guess I put on myself many years ago in an attempt to fit in and seem normal. Thank you.

First of all, thank you for this wonderful video! Your description of ENFPs is one of the most accurate ones I have heard.
I feel like the happy-go-lucky novelty seeker stereotype describes an ENFP in a particularly good mood, but most of the time, your description is far more relatable. I'm still processing it, and will probably watch the video again, but I really enjoyed it.
Your points about Si were very interesting, especially the part about having designated times for certain important tasks. I literally punched the air when you said that because it's the part of my personality that has always confused me and made me question if I was an ENFP. I don't actively seek novel sensory experiences. I am very comfortable eating the same thing every day if I like it and know that it's good for me, for example. I also like to go to certain bars and cafes that have a special meaning to me. And when I was living abroad, part of me wanted to go and explore every part of the city, another kept wanting to go back and explore the same place that I had found particularly compelling. But I do get very excited by new information, and the way my mind perceives and works with information is very much the Ne-Te you described.
I work in theatre, and even before I had learned about personality typology, I always used to think about how you need to be able to hear the same words and do the same things over and over again without going crazy in order to stage a play, make a film, paint, or do anything artistic really. In that sense, it seems Si plays a pretty big role in enabling creativity.
I think an ENFP with a strong Fi objective can be very organized, analytical, focused, and disciplined, even reclusive. I really enjoy strategizing and planning routines to maximize productivity, but I do have trouble actually sticking to the same one for more than a week without it negatively affecting my mood. When that happens, I know to switch it up.
I was wondering if you could explain how Fe manifests in ENFPs. I know that in Socionics it is the Demonstrative function and is supposedly very strong, but I am really interested in what you have to say. :)

    • @CognitivePersonalityTheory
      @CognitivePersonalityTheory  Pƙed 4 lety +11

Thank you so much! Heh, yes, the Si-side of the ENFP tends to go overlooked - this is partially owing to what I consider to be a misunderstanding of the important role the oppositional function plays within the psyche.
I'm really not a huge fan of this whole 'assigning a function in x position a specific role/archetype' thing but to answer your question regarding Fe in an ENFP - this function is the sub-authority and thus pushes forward an agenda in an albeit unconscious and more secondary manner, but it is also a function the ENFP dips into from the position of Te in order to more effectively communicate their plans to others and ensure a cohesive social atmosphere :)

    • @ruthlessruth4197
      @ruthlessruth4197 Pƙed 3 lety +1

That’s very true! I love to create routines for myself! If it’s something like, the place where I put each of my work tools when I get home, so I know where they are in the morning and don’t have to stand at the door for ten minutes mentally wondering if I’ve forgotten anything- a routine like this can remain unchanged for a long time and it won’t “bore” me.
But if it’s like a route I take, accessories I wear, my hair, foods, etc.
I like to get familiar with something first by making it into a routine (depth exploration), and then change it up suddenly when I get the feeling for something new (breadth exploration).

    • @ruthlessruth4197
      @ruthlessruth4197 Pƙed 3 lety +2

Cognitive Personality Theory That also makes a lot of sense. I will use my Ne/Fi which is always focused on win-win ideas to benefit everyone. But my Te delivery sometimes comes out as sounding entirely task-based and devoid of empathy.
People sometimes really mis-read my intention because of this. I would like to be able to use Fe better in these situations.

I relate a lot to this. While most ENFP type descriptions is accurate to when I was a kid, this seems more like a matured ENFP.
Similar to the INTJ descriptions being wayyyy too focused on the thinking function, ENFP descriptions have been written with so much focus on the feeling function and socially extroverted aspect that I can’t recognize much of myself in it. There is also rarely a mention of a philosophical or organized side, which I have always had (compared to my messy ENTP brother).
Being less socially extroverted, more organized and more philosophically inclined than most ENFP descriptions, I thought I must be an INFJ, but it never felt right. Thank you for this video!

Sometimes it was hard to feel comfortable around other people and it scared me that I was no longer who I wanted to be. I am definetly still silly around friends and family, but I am much more analytical then modern typers would portray us as. So it refreshing to hear this version of ENFPs that is not brought up as often and makes me not feel as guilty for willing to challenge the status quo, follow more logic solutions for societal problems, and being overall an analytical person. This has made me feel that I really did not lose myself throughout it all, thank you!

Because that's what I am to me, 'normal' and 'logical' and yes funny enough the social butterfly, novelty seeking, adrenaline addicted personality I get thrown on me quite often or ................moody.........just because I am optimistic most of the time but I don't hide when I am affected by the world 'negatively' or feel thrown off. But people just don't get it. When they think I am impulsive many many processes have taken place inside of me before taking action. Thank you, this is by far the most nuanced description of the ENFP and their functions that I've ever seen. This is the first time I've heard ENFP's described as analytical. I've been torn between ENFP and ENTP. Because I value both detached, logical, critical, analysis, of both external (political, economic, etc.) and internal (philosophical, value, psychological.) systems and intensely enjoy philosophy even in its most pure form of analyzing existence and existential questions with no human relation. But I also feel like I have deep Fi like values and convictions and deeply value being true to myself and my principles.
I love how you said that there's no essential dichotomy between thinking and feeling. Obviously we humans are both thinking and feeling beings. And its nice to see an mbti analysis that reflects my own non-essentialist philosophy on life and especially humanity. You obviously have incredible insight on this issue.

I find in general the pop psychological culture that is so pervasive out there, feels so 'meh', and it doesn't help with learning more about ourselves.
I found your account of enfps truly wonderful. I really as I am sure others appreciate the effort and understanding that you have shared with us.
I find myself generally very introverted, I prefer to spend a significant time on my own than be with others. I just love to learn about human behaviour, the various cultural behaviours etc etc, and I am often pondering over the WHYS of behaviours of those around me. I have a real need to understand why people do the things they do.
I also find it very easy and enjoyable to talk to other people, if myself and my infj other half are in a new space that I am interested and excited to be in, it will be me that is at the forefront of asking people questions, gaining as much information as I can and figuring out a plan whereby my infj will take a more observational role. (We will work through things together ultimately).
I also find though that being out in the 'real world' too much can be very exhausting for me. It's like my output gets depleted very quickly when I have to pay attention too much outwards.

I love your point about extraverted intuition, when you said that it’s not extraverted in a people sense but in an ideas and system sense. This explains so much, because I certainly love the external world but not necessarily external social situations

I've just discovered your channel because I was trying to type my friend who I believed was an intp... Looking through your videos I found this one talking about my own type. I've always had everything you said in my mind while I was trying to understand and learn more about the functions. But the way you explained it made it even more clear and gave me a fresh look at it. I'm surely a new fan of your channel and I believe I'll be watching all your videos. I love the way you explain everything. Thank you!

    Appreciate your videos a lot!
    They are extremely insightful.
Sometimes a little hard to understand, maybe it's because you talk very effectively (but that's a good thing!), packed with information and really shows the amount of work you put into your research/analysis etc.
I just have to pause or rewatch so I can fully soak up every sentence (lol).
    Very impressed!

This is me to a tee. Interestingly I 'score' exceptionally low on my Si but my Fi and Ne I feel like makes up for it. 'wow I'm in such a horrible mood, why? Oh because I didn't get enough sleep last night' as a basic example

As an ENFP, I really appreciate this! I perform a lot of analysis for my job, and have an advance degree in this area. I also apply this approach in my personal life. So thank you for providing this. It very much applies and resonates with me.

This is one of the nicest videos about enfps I’m glad I found this. I was finding a lot of videos on how distracted we are and emotional and flaky. But I am an enfp with adhd and I’m still more logical than many people due to lots of introspection and researching everything. I’m constantly learning and applying it. That’s the beauty of life in my opinion.

Thanks for that video, that helps a lot to see another ENFP description than the stereotypical one with super outgoing and rainbows and flowers everywhere. Honestly I still struggle figuring out whether I'm INFJ or ENFP. Especially because of the intuitive and feeling functions. I struggle observing my own way of thinking. Guess that will still take a long time.

I very much relate to what you are saying here as an ENFP. I’ve taken the test multiple times, disappointed to get the same result because it doesn’t describe me. Ha. I don’t personally relate to the majority of how this personality type is described, but what you say here very much resonates with my experience. Thank you !

Great description. I have spontaneous, can have a great conversation with anyone, and have the ability to bring a room together. Every other description says I should pick a career as an artist or a comedian. Not to negate my comedic material, but I hold 3 financial licenses, working in 3 others, and I am also half way through my MBA working as a financial examiner for a financial firm. Every other exam says we should avoid fields in engineering and finance. Interesting stuff

I really enjoyed this video! So much so that I wrote a long comment that got deleted and I am back to try to re-create what I said. Everything you said shows you have taken time to really think about the functions that an enfp has and how it could show up in the real world. As you mentioned extroversion does exclusively pertain to how people show up in social situations. Even though I do enjoy being around others and being involved in conversations I prefer having a small group of friends, having one on one conversations rather than group conversations and often I remove myself from the group totally just to sit on my own which makes others more uncomfortable (they think I am lonely but I am loving the space). I appreciate how you described Ne as a wide angle lens, that is a simple description that makes extroverted intuition easier to understand. Also, oddly, your statement about having an exercise schedule is so true for me. I feel like the best version of myself (mentally more than physically) when I regularly (daily) take the time to be active. I stick to a schedule to make sure I am taking appropriate supplements to my diet, I stick to a skincare routine and more etc. anyway I could go on and on but this video was very well done. Thanks for your hard work in putting this together!

Your take on the functions and types is refreshing and relatable,i can see myself more in the light of being an ambivert. The INFJ type of ENFP had me intrigued as i could just be that type of the personality.I love people, but i found i often love and need solitude to feel my best. I can truely be bright and expressive lots i i have the energy, exploration is energizing and liberating to me :)

Glad to see an objective, serious analysis of the ENFP type. So much of what you say is correct. But, like so many others, you limit Typology to four functions. In the case of ENFP, it is Ne, Fi, Te, Si. The reality os that all of us have Eight functions. In the case of ENFP, it is Ne, Fi, Te, Si, Ni, Fe, Ti, Se. The first four may be termed the Conscious functions, the last four the Subconscious functions. As described by Jung, we develop these functions with age and maturity, starting with Ne for the ENFP, INFJ and others. We develop these functions with life experience, but only access the subconscious functions within the stressors of a challenging life. Thus, some of us may never quite grow up. But for those of us who learn to access the four subconscious functions, a complete, wholistic life may be realized. This applies to all Types.

Hi! I don't limit the ENFP to four functions, nor do I limit the cognitive functions to eight. Rather, I place all functions on a spectrum, and it is this fluid spectrum that is the underlying emphasis of my videos :)
