In December 2023, I was part of a team delivering supplies to IDF soldiers at military bases along the Gaza Border. I have military contacts and photos of military equipment I was specially ordered by IDF brass not to share online and I know more than most civilians about the subject. When you look at the technology they utilize, it makes it even harder to understand how Hamas breached their border using some tractors and motorcycles. Even if Israel intelligence didn't see this coming, I don't understand how Hamas was able to physically ingress so far into Israel.
Units that were supposed to be on the border with gaza were sent elsewhere. There was very little fighting power there at the time @daneast
The problem is that they had information on movement of many people in the border but the IDF did not do anything believing that nothing will happen. After the war is ended there will be trials to find the people that did not do their job to inform on time.

Israeli Military has it's regular serviceman soldiers in "mandatory" service
They serve close to 3 years (men) and Officers who serve for longer as a full time job
In addition the IDF has over 400k reserveists, these reservist are former serviceman, they have their normal jobs and life's but they do train usually twice per year

Here are some more unstated reasons for the IDF's success.
1. Everyone who is conscripted starts off as a private. No one begins as an officer. All the generals started as privates.
2. One can only move up in rank based solely on merit. All soldiers are taught to think independently to solve situational challenges and think "outside the box".
3. Rank is secondary. All officers are encouraged to listen to subordinates for other ideas. The old concept of "4 heads are better than one".
4. Because the IDF conscripts from the entire eligible population, it has the ability to discern the various skills and talents of their recruits and place them in those forces that best match their intelligence and skill sets.
5. Officers always lead first in a fight. That's why their officer casualty rate is higher than other armies.
6. They have to win because they have no other choice.
The officers run first because this is Israeli combat theory since the days of the Bible. If you want to learn how to fight like an Israeli, open a Bible. Everything is inside. For example, a humanitarian corridor. Why do Israelis leave an opening for the enemy to escape? So that he would have another option than to fight to the death. Another interesting thing, when Israel starts a war, they prefer to take the enemy soldiers captive. But when the enemy starts a war, they take prisoners just to extract information. It's all Bible. Not the Christian Bible. Real Bible
Enlisted personnel do move up rank based solely on time spent in the military. And in fact officers move up rank the same way up to major.
Curiously... in Brazil it is impossible for privates to rank up to officers...
I mean... they can become officers... but they don't do so by "ranking up".

As in, they need to get in by standardized testing(and have a undergraduate degree), like everyone else.
It wasn't always like that, but our Supreme Court ruled that these "rank ups"(from "agent"[in the case of police] or "soldier", to "officer") are unconstitutional(because the entry in these careers is standardized testing)

They planned and executed this deception for years and persuaded Israel to withdraw the bulk of their forces and rely solely on technology to secure the fence. The engine on the front won't do much against modern apfsds (kinetic energy munition). In that sense, one can even say that it's a faulty design, as the armor is actually reduced compared to the other western MBTs. However, it is very effective against heat projectiles, including all sorts of rockets, which is very convenient for Israelis as they will be facing lots of RPGs but not any modern western MBTs on the field. It really is designed to be used by Israel and Israel only.
Firstly Merkava has a batle kit design to be attached in the bottom front part if it goes to Battle against modern tanks, upper front has same resilience as other western MBTs.
The turret is design so the tank can basically hide exposing it and not much more with many degrees of elevation and depression meaning that the add-on kit is not really that necessary

a correction: there are women serving in the armored corps. It's still very new though. On oct 7, armored units led by women managed to protect one of the kibbutzs, hitting dozens of the invaders, while having to learn to operate an armored vehicle they've never used before without any guidance

Also, there were hunderds, if not thousands videos from terorrists that praised their killings and kidnapping.
While it completely makes sense that there were few occasions of soldiers tragically shooting by mistake the people (just like in any other conflict, shooting accidently on your side is unfortunately more common than we think), to claim that most of the Israelis killed were by terrorists is simply lacking any factual basis.
Having said all of that, the truth is a great value for me, so you can post here the sources claiming what you wrote so I can see and judge them myself.

They haven't fought a war since 2006 in south Lebanon, which they lost. Even Operation Cast Lead in 2014 in Gaza wasn't a clear victory. They're a conscript army, many of those serving don't want to be there. Most of the military are reservists who lack regular training and experience. They rely heavily on technology to reduce casualties, more so than Americans, and are extremely sensitive to any casualties they do receive.

Israel cannot do that, they can defend themselves very well for their size. That's efficiency, not effectiveness. Not even counting just sheer presence and global reach, there's not a place in the world where a military force can start up a single fighter plane without the US military knowing of it in one way or another lmao.
You mistake power for effectiveness. The US military is more powerful, no doubt. But effectiveness is where power meets wisdom and guidance to fulfill a need. If a military is able to accomplish its goals (for the IDF, protect the country of Israel and its people) with minimal casualties, time and damage to the growth and prosperity of the country, then the military is effective.
Just this month, Israel was able to take control of the city of Khan-Yunis- which hamas had spent almost 20 years fortifying, building battle plans for, digging under, and booby trapping every building- in less than two months, completely dismantling four full battalions operating inside (about 4 thousand terrorists either dead, neutralized or captured), with less than 20 casualties to the IDF. Let that sink in.
This is unheard of, and by a long way.
I will say the iron Dome defense system is futuristic as hell.
Hopefully the Iron beam system will be in use soon becase it will be revolutionary in being able to destroy incomming rocket, drones and even aircraft They will increase the power of that beam staedily once it is in use and it will remove the need for rocket based defense systems over time.

no, Iron Beam won't remove the need for rocket based defence systems... for example, it's a defence system against short range (e.g. Qassam, Katjusha and Grad rockets) and slow moving threats (especially drones), but it surely can't replace the missile defence systems David's Sling and Arrows3.
Also, the laser isn't really effective in clouds, therefore they still need Iron Dome on rainy days.
So, Iron Beam will be a very useful addition and improvement, but not replacement, for the existing missile-based defence systems.
Hopefully they will have some Iron Beam systems operational before any major escalation from Hizbullah.

The real reason the IDF is so effective is the spirit of the IDF soldiers - the strive to success and tenacity to the mission is the primary value of the IDF soldier. There is not such thing as "we can't do it", instead they say "there must be some way to do it, we just have to figure out how". This spirit runs deep in the IDF, from the front line soldier aiming to advance in the battlefield, to the soldier at the headquarters planning the next technological development. It's about moving forward where most others would give up.
