This is “borrowed valor”, not stolen valor. 😂
It does stink a bit. But he did serve in the military, in Afghanistan, and was involved in combat at least once. That’s a heck of a lot more than I ever did for my country.
This isn’t a lying problem as much as it is exaggerating and bragging problem. It’s also a stupidity problem, if the Congressman thought no one would ever check his record.
Before piling on, I’m going to wait for the soldiers he served with to step forward in his defense or to contradict his story.
There’s one more angle. Was he awarded the bronze star for something routine because of his family military connections? For example, was the bronze star awarded because he was on a FOB that was mortared, and did the other soldiers all receive bronze stars? If they didn’t, that would seem to indicate favoritism. That’s a question we should be asking. But perhaps he did something heroic during a mortar attack, which is why we want other soldiers to testify either on his behalf or against him.

    Stolen valor.
My Dad was a WWII tank gunner and then a recon car commander. But that was all he ever told me about the war outside of a couple of funny stories. I asked him why he never joined the local VFW, and he said, "Who the Hell would want to relive the God damned war?" Dad was also a life-long Democrat. After he died I found an old cigar box in the back of the bottom drawer in his dresser. It was full of ribbons and medals. Among them I found a Bronze Star, and a Silver Star. Yet these Republicans have the nerve to wear awards they never earned, years after they left the service. It makes me want to gag.

Its a tradition going back to the days of Sen. "Tail gunner" Joe McCarthy wrote up his own DFC when serving with the Marine corps in WWII
      from Wikipedia
"He later falsely claimed participation in 32 aerial missions in order to qualify for a Distinguished Flying Cross and multiple awards of the Air Medal, which the Marine Corps chain of command decided to approve in 1952 because of his political influence. McCarthy also publicized a letter of commendation which he claimed had been signed by his commanding officer and Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, then Chief of Naval Operations. However, his commander revealed that McCarthy had written this letter himself, probably while preparing award citations and commendation letters as an additional duty, and that he had signed his commander's name, after which Nimitz signed it during the process of just signing numerous other such letters.A "war wound"-a badly broken leg-that McCarthy made the subject of varying stories involving airplane crashes or anti-aircraft fire had in fact happened aboard ship during a raucous celebration for sailors crossing the equator for the first time. Because of McCarthy's various lies about his military heroism, his "Tail-Gunner Joe" nickname was sarcastically used as a term of mockery by his critics.

My Dad fought from the the sands of North Africa to the occupation of Germany. He never spoke much about it to my mother but I always had an interest in history. When I was about 15 we were watching the movie The Longest Day. There's a scene when they come through the hedgerow to an open field where there was all these dead Germans on the side of the road. Suddenly he said"That's kinda the way it looked. We had control of the air and as they were trying to move columns to the front our planes mowed them down. Stolen Valor is a Federal Felony Offense. Lying about receiving an award is included. I did admin in an actual Infantry unit where we also had soldiers with MOS's (Jobs) other than infantry and they could not be awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. As far as being awarded the Bronze Star. I worked as a civilian contractor over there after I got out, that just happened to work in the Mayors cells at several bases in theater and many commands used the Bronze Star as a campaign medal (an award that anyone who served in theater regardless of the job they do receives) and awarded it to every member of their command. This ends up making the award meaningless and undermines it's value for the soldiers of previous wars/conflicts and this one, who actually did something worthy to be awarded it. Awards are worth a certain amount of promotion points and these commands wanted reward their soldiers by giving them an advantage over other commands and really all they did is raise the amount of points required to get promoted for everyone.

Peace: the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 that you are referring to was thrown out by the Supreme Court. Here is the actual Stolen Valor act, it's pretty short because of the First Amendment: "Stolen Valor Act of 2013 - Amends the federal criminal code to rewrite provisions relating to fraudulent claims about military service to subject to a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both an individual who, with intent to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit, fraudulently holds himself or herself out to be a recipient of:

Basically though it is incredibly difficult to access those sorts of records, unless you have permission from that individual or are next of kin. Someone who is maybe in a relationship short of marriage with someone who is committing stolen valor is going to have a tough time verifying whether someone is actually even a veteran.

    • @Lupinthe3rd.
      @Lupinthe3rd. Před 28 dny +3

Yes except he lies about a second bronze star. Not an easy oversight most service members don't come close to a write up . Its not like when Col. David Hackworth had an audit of his own service record and found he had only one dfc not 3 and 10 silver stars not nine and not entitled to wear the ranger tab. I know sounds insane guy had been decorated over 90 times over three wars.
      Hackworth before his death
I had served in the 8th Ranger Company; later I served in the 27th Raiders of the 25th Infantry Division. On the Raiders' tenth mission, the regimental commander awarded every trooper the Ranger Tab. When all this fell out after the Boorda story, I immediately had my records audited. And they reflected that I was awarded the Ranger Tab. It was on my official records; it's not something I claimed falsely.
Let me tell you how the regulation reads now. To rate a Ranger Tab, you had to have been awarded the Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) while a member of the 8th Ranger Company. But I got my CIB with Company G, 27th Infantry Regiment. Thus, the 1951 award of the tab did not meet the 1980s criteria. I take all the blame.
All the guys in the 27th Raiders got the Ranger Tab, but they were not Rangers. When the Boorda story exploded, people were looking for chinks in my armor. So I'm a defrocked Ranger. As it turned out, though, in the Army's vetting of my record, they found I had ten Silver Stars, not nine.
This guy was no David Hackworth
