DESPERADO remains one of my favourite albums of that era. It captured the heart and soul of the early American pioneers and spoke honestly about the people and their lives. I have not heard another album like it - it's honest, unpretentious and musically accurate. I would not be shocked if you told me they were actual songs written in the late 1800s.

The Eagles main problem for me is that they have been played to death. Their good songs are really good. Don Henley is one of the best vocalists of his day. I actually like Henley's solo stuff pretty well, especially The End of the Innocence. Glenn Frey's solo stuff, on the other hand, I despise.
Eagles are kind of an A.M. radio, bubble gum kind of vibe, but I don't hold them in the same disdain that I hold bands like Styx and REO Speedwagon.
As usual, Jason goes out on a ledge in picking Hotel California as their second worst. While I wouldn't say that Hotel is classic by any means, it's a pretty decent album and it holds together better than most of their albums.
Take It Easy was my first favorite song as a kid of five years old, and I still have a soft spot for it today.

Nice work guys. Joe, I see we hit agreement with your top 2. For me with all the rankings and my own selections, they are viewed through the lens of what was I doing, where did this album sit in my world on release, rather than an objective analysis. As I move into the more recent years I imagine my perspective will be more objective. Love it all. Cheers

    In order of preference:
On the Border ( largely because of Ol’ ‘55 , On the Border , Good Day in Hell , and Already Gone , and in spite of James Dean )
    Hotel California
    Desperado
    One of These Nights
    The Long Run
    The Eagles
    Long Road Out of Eden
Incidentally , I really liked your re - sequencing of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours . Here’s an idea , how about the perfect sequenced album from a group ‘s catalogue ? Take the best opening track from any of their albums n then the best second song from any of their albums etc. Take the Eagles for example :
    1 : Doolin’ Dalton
    2: Witchy Woman
    3 : In the City
    4 : Wasted Time
    Etc .
Obviously , this is easier to do with groups with smaller catalogues, like the Doors .
It might be a fun exercise ( or not )
    Thanks !

I've been listening to the Eagles since the late 70s and have always liked them. All the albums are pretty close to each other in quality except the debut and then Long Road Out of Eden, which I couldn't even listen to in its entirety. Every album, except Eden, has a few songs that I love and a couple more that I really liked. Unfortunately, all of them also had at least a couple of songs that I really didn't like. Frey was my favorite Eagles singer and I actually liked most of the songs that were mentioned as being awful.

    7. Long Road Out of Eden (too overproduced, too long, but has maybe 10 decent songs out of the 20)
    6. Eagles self Titled debut (good country rock debut, not so much the sound of a band really working together just jamming. Earlybird is only bad track)
    5. The Long Run (you can feel the wheels falling off. Disco Stranger, Teenage Jail and Greeks dont want no freaks are just silly however King of Hollywood is underrated. Rest of the album is good)
    4. On the Border (great balance of rock and country without over doing it. Can't think of one track that's skipable)
    3. Desperado (GREAT concept album that was underappreciated at the time of its release. Twenty One and Out of Control are the only tracks that just dont fit, the rest is great)
    2. One Of These Nights (stepping away from rock and go for a more RnB, soulful sound that works. I Wish You Peace is the only abysmal track)
    1. Hotel California (sure it's a bit overrated but it's the first real rock album I listened to and has a close place in my heart. Not a bad track on it)

Very interesting video. I collected that nearly all of y’all just don’t like the Eagles style of country rock/soft rock. This is fine, as I know that the Eagles are somewhat controversial in the classic rock community. As a huge Gen Z fan of Eagles, I have heard plenty criticism when looking for others opinions. One that is quite common is the idea of perfectionism. The records are too polished and too clean. Other is the failure of Eagles to produce a convincing rock sound. The later is a huge point of disagreement for me and the simplest way to see this is in their live shows. Seattle 1976, Capital Centre 1977, and Houston 1977 really showcase that Eagles could indeed rock.
The Eagles are my favorite band and On The Border is my favorite album, so my soul was just crushed when y’all put it so low. Of course, we all have our opinions and I enjoyed hearing some constructive criticism.

"Eagles albums ranked by two guys who hate the Eagles and one who only likes them a little." I for one love them but some albums are better than others. Everyone is too tough on Long road out of Eden. It should have been a single CD. If you cut out half the tracks (the weaker ones) It would have made a really great single album.
    7. Long Road out of Eden (some great tracks and some sleepers)
    6. Eagles (debut) (A few great tracks but a few duds- haven't really found their standing yet)
    5. The Long Run (Mostly good with a couple duds)
    4. (now it gets tough) Hotel California (has its moments of brilliance (the last Resort, Wasted Time). Title track is way over rated and over played. I personally love New Kid in Town)
    3. One of These Nights (some standout tracks and great variety. I wish you peace stinks though).
    2. On the Border (great variety of styles and nearly every track is great)
    1. Desperado (just classic- the perfect country rock album)

The Eagles were hung up on perfection. With the kind of music they played, I found myself wishing that they would cut loose a little more. Felder's guitar playing really helped them. Lots of tasty solo's. The addition of Walsh gave them the joker they always needed. But, by then they only had one great album left in them.
They were a 70's phenomenon, all the way. In order to really understand what they were about one has to understand the country-rock tree they were a part of. I do, I always knew why they were and are so popular. That said, there were records by similar artists that I liked more. Eagles were careful, critical, serious and sometimes calculatingly vapid.
They never over-played. Dark, cynically playful. Henley had the great voice and excellent lyrical skills. Both he and Glenn Frey controlled the band's path. And yes, they had great vocal harmonies. Their image was to be cool by dressing casually and eschewing any kind of bawdy style. That way, they were the casual fans perfect image of themselves. They tapped into the times perfectly. Believe it or not, things have not changed all that much.

I agree that bands like the Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco, and Mason Proffit probably all did country rock better than The Eagles, but it's also easy to see why the Eagles' particular brand of it appealed to a wider audience.

    • @kenm.3512
      @kenm.3512 Před 4 lety +1

Most definitely. Poco were too giddy and too 'aww-shucks!' Also too sweet. They could loosen up beautifully. They had Rusty Young.
The Burrito's were psychedelic in the beginning. Too weird, and those suits ! Parsons was a self- destructive trainwreck waiting to happen. But when he left, they became yesterdays news.
The Eagles learned a lot from all of the bands and carefully set about molding their own image and sound.

After the amazing title track you get New Kid in Town, for me that kills the energy of the entire album. The Eagles; you had to be there..... if you were listening to the radio in the 70s, the Eagles were different than most bands around. The trouble might be that they were so successful and so many bands copied their formula, and their hits got played to death on the radio (yes, I was there and New Kid in Town dominated the charts in the summer of 76), that might be why people dislike them. I don’t love them but they’re decent. And I’m no superficial music fan as my fav bands are Zappa’s bands, Pere Ubu, Mission of Burma, experimental jazz, psychedelic and classic hard rock. The Eagles full albums are pretty good, that’s all. Btw, Ole 55 is a Tom Waits written song if I’m not mistaken

I am pretty squarely in the Kramzer camp regarding the Eagles and most of his criticisms ring true to me. In addition, I think you all tended to overlook one of the unifying aspect of the Eagles' oeuvre: they are exceptional sourpusses about most everything. Even worse, they have a quality of wanting to claim some sort of hard-earned authenticity about the perils of "life in the fast lane" and what they learned from their own excesses while dismissing others' engaged in the same things as fools and caricatures. There is persistent quality of prudish preachiness and distaste for their own scene that runs through all their work after the first two albums, i.e. their classic period. They seem to have less fun with each subsequent work. Why anyone finds over-polished moralizing attractive has always escaped me. Eagles - hard pass.

So much variety on it and was a precursor for things to come. A close second for me is One of These Nights. Great title cut and the only one of theirs that has all 5 sing a lead vocal. Hotel California for how great it may be has way too much Henley on it. This and the follow up, The Long Run was the Henley show.

Any album without Timothy B. Schmidt not on the bass, will be crap. The song "Take it easy" is a classic Eagles song. If you don't like that song, skip the band you're not a Eagles fan. Witchy Woman was a big hit back then. Radio played many of their songs to death. Henley is the best singer, although Schmidt can sing lead very well, but doesn't do it but a few songs.

You did not mention that after the first four albums, they released "Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)". This contained all their radio hits. It is one of the best selling albums in history. Also, "Hell Freezes Over", was half live, half studio. It contained four new studio songs. Hard to rate four songs.

That town's only claim to fame is the Dalton raid in 1892 and that connection always drew me to the Desperado album. I appreciated the comment that the harder they tried to be an arena rock the more annoying they got. That goes contrary to the narrative Frey and Henley tried to spin. Is Walsh the most overrated rock star of all time? Maybe. As Bernie Leadon might point out, why is the original Greatest Hits album up there with Thriller as the biggest seller of all time? But then I forgot about those ponderings because I became so annoyed that someone else thought "New Kid In Town" was the worst track on HC. Why do watch this stuff? How did this happen??

I don't remember any other bands that she had all the albums for... oh wait Simon & Garfunkle), and I grew up with their California rock harmony vibes. THAT SAID, I re-listened to all of their albums when Glen Frey died, had a great time listening to them... but agree with Jason that Hotel California was the worst of the "classic era". Don't like that album, boring boring boring and the hits are the most overplayed. Also, digressing from the lists here, I found On the Border one of my faves and also like all those rockers that y'all don't (James Dean, Heartache Tonight etc).

Which are pleasant enough , but lack feeling. Everyone tends to overlook how conceited , and macho BS , the bragging about what a stud Glenn Frey's love letter to himself disguised as carefree lyrics the song Take It Easy was . 7 women left heartbroken , and another slowing down her truck to stare at him . Even Motley Crue couldn't have come up with lyrics containing a more sexist macho self indulgent song
