- Since the release of the prequel to Rockstar's 2010 title "Red Dead Redemption" there has been much critism surrounding the much loved protagonist, outlaw John Marston.
Here I sum up some of the issues brought to light over the internet by fans.

And they put so much detail in his scars through Arthur’s story. The scar was fading over time and you can see the color becoming lighter after each chapter

@Yan Terahn Yeah he's ugly in rdr, largely due to the fact that he looks about 45, is fat and greasy but I get your point. John in rdr2 is very handsome, like Arthur, for some reason they gave every character model bone structure and facial fat, even micah is handsome shaved.
With each update I notice more and more glitches in the story mode. Especially that one with people complaining about you being to underdressed for cold weather when we are in swamp lands in 80-90 degree weather.

For me the biggest issue is the fact that John just doesn't look as mean as he did in the first game. He actually looks kinda naive.
I agree, not the actor as rob does an incredible job as John but he doesn’t come off as hard as nails like in rdr1, and. He’s far to skinny, either that or his clothes are just way too small

Well hes kind meant to be confused and less tough in rdr2, running around trying to figure out how to live a normal, legal, life. I think him looking a little less tough fits the narrative.

Adding to your point, it makes more sense given that there was less to work with in that generation of consoles, plus there’s no other reference for what an adult Jack would look like… and if anything, it makes sense he’d look like his parents while meanwhile John and Arthur have no familial relation.

Theres also other things I forgot to mention:
1) His custom lancaster repeater is missing from his weapons inventory
2) He doesn't have his bowie knife
3) His knife holster is the same one as Arthurs and has the same problems
4) His NPC model has the crappy knife holster and the same problems
5) His cowboy outfit is missing the regular trousers belt
6) His cowboy spurs are inaccurate
7) His rancher outfit his missing the regular trousers belt
8) The belt he wears as part of his homesteader outfit disappears after The Wheel
Theres probably more things that I haven't spotted yet.

@@StuartLugsden When using mods if you give yourself all weapons you can see there is a weapon that says John’s Lancaster Repeater, you cant use it sadly because it was cut from the epilogue.
Epilogue John needs to look more rugged aswell as have his original hair,he looks like a pretty boy compared to RDR1 John who looked menacing which is only 3-4 years later

Wait, is it really just a retexture of arthur? Why the heck didn't they just use the John NPC? I thought that's pretty much what they used since he has the same walking style, and if I'm not mistaken, when you model change to John, you actually change into a main character that can be customized, unlike npcs.

i think the main problem was the hair growth system, thats why they had to change the head type, and because of that they had to change the body type too, but instead of trying to fix john npc body to work in the epilogue, they decided to use arthurs whole body for him, making him look a bit more thinner but with the same body type as arthur, the only thing that is from john is his textures, yea that was the worst decision they made in this game.
they would have to make a new hair growth system for john because arthurs hair had some issues with his head type, so instead they decided to be lazy, and just changed his body to arthurs and his hair
@@iamthespy928 Actually Arthur's hair works just fine on NPC John's body and on 1.00 John had his own body. It's just for no reason they gave him Arthur's head shape and then with updates they made him look exactly like Arthur

@@iamthespy928 Actually Epilogue John has always had Arthur's head shape while 1899 had his own headshape. That glitch you mention is because originally they were gonna give John different hair lengths and his own hair on Arthur's head model but when they cut it they forgot to remove the scalp so it would sometimes appear out of nowhere
Still no excuse, a multi-billion dollar company isn't supposed to be that lazy and neglecting a beloved character

Playing the game through 3 times, I always thought there was something off about John's epilogue hair, just knew it was different but didn't care much.

I just dont understand why they could've not keep his premier rdr2 look before the game was released. The screenshots was just amazing seeing his rdr1 look in rdr2 graphics engine.
Yeah, by pre release and cut animations, hairstyle etc they were definitely planning to make the pre release version the John we play as. We can only assume that they ran out of time and so couldn't fix any issues that resulted with this model so resorted to a John/Arthur hybrid that could be completed in time. Its a shame, though, that with the 2 years worth of time they've had after release, they haven't bothered to fix this/implement the real John.
Part of me wishes they had delayed RDR2 another year, as I feel John's issues wouldn't exist, all the glitches present on day 1 would mostly be resolved and the Online would've launched a whole lot better. They could have won GOTY too! But we can only hope Rockstar gets their finger out their arse and fixes Johns issues and makes better and more consistent online updates.

At least they changed the sprinting animation from Arthur’s sprint. He does start off with that frantic run at first like arthur’s run buh then runs with his arms to his side and in a formal way

finally someone points out the "trash bag gloves". that was the very first thing I noticed when John put on his classic outfit, like wtf was rockstar thinking. there's even some slightly smaller gloves (that are still pretty f***ing oversized in their own right) of the same style but Rockstar didn't make those officially part of the outfit for some reason.
If you do the research you'll find that John had a perfect outfit, hair and even RDR1 aiming animations, and it's all finished. For some odd reason they put in MORE work to make the Arthur Marston abomination. I just hope one day they give us the real John

The Arthur Morgan esc body is mostly due to the model being developed by Rdr2. Since Johns body during the main story is way thinner and way more similar to John you can add things such as preset hair, etc. but if you try to add preset hair to the model and rig it to have it grow and have the beard grow and also have more customization that doesn’t even fit the model since most of the clothing is rigged for Arthur then you have the problem with Rdr2 john where he is literally a slightly slim morph of Arthur because they could not work with having to try and remodel everything

Another issue is that when you play as John and start a mission that was also playable with Arthur, they have the absolute same dialogs and even the same trejets and features when speaking. Like the second mission with Charlotte, where you teach her how to shoot, they both say "I know a thing or two about shooting a gun", and so it goes...

This is annoying, but I can forgive it now as they really cant just rehire the actor to do work for a few scenes, but Johns appearance can be fixed quickly so I just cant forgive it.

At the beginning of RDR2 John's frozen horse has a unique saddle and Old Boy has a unique saddle and sadly neither of them are used when riding Rachel when she becomes available nor are they available at the stable.
They are available at stables though you just have to recreate them, the saddles he uses are just normal saddles that are customized not unique

John's frozen horse saddle was badass, it had JM (his initials) on it and it's a shame you can't obtain it as a regular saddle.
@@islamicjoker5127 There should have been an objective where we are told to unstrap the saddle from the dead horse and put it on the back of Arthur's temporary horse and once they're out of the snow it becomes Old Boy's saddle. The second one should have been the one he uses when riding Rachel. Also, in my headcanon the thoroughbred he uses at the beginning use to belong to Davey Callander because Javier doesn't call the horse by it's name he just says it was the one John was using when they fled Blackwater which means, like Arthur, he lost his personal horse in the massacre.

I hate how RDR2 does a disservice to John when he's playable. He doesn't feel like John and he's not handled with respect. For a game so immensely detailed, Rockstar sure was lazy when letting us play as the OG. Just another reason why all the Arthur lovers have yet to see just how good John is too. Stop sleeping on the man and put some respect on his name, Rockstar.
It is so weird too, as although we call Rockstar lazy, they really do show that they care in the epilogue, like John's cover art pose in jim milton rides again and the RDR1 music. There was even aiming animations for john that resembled how he aimed and held guns in RDR1, but for some reason were unused. They probably ran out of time for release, and since then the devs have probably all been allocated to the online and so makes it hard to allocate time to John's model. Not defending it though, as this shit needs to be fixed

They did John dirty in the epilogue, the gloves just look plain goofy. I just decided to use black riding gloves because they look more accurate to the first game.
He does look alot better in rdr1, and those RDR 2 promo pics of him are probably the closest we ever see to his original look in 2.

Another thing that bothered me that maybe you can cover in another video is his voice. Rob Wiethoff is amazing, but once you're free to explore the open world as John, his performance just feels more... "emotional"? Which is weird to say because acting is supposed to be emotional, haha. But it was odd hearing John have so many highs and lows with his voice. John in the first RDR had such a dry, serious sensibility about him that really made him feel different from Arthur, and I loved it.
It's really bad if you play any side missions that were written for Arthur. He has the exact same lines in all of them and it's just way out of character.
You nailed it buddy. I hate to paraphrase what you just wrote, but it’s so unseemly for this badass with a sense of purpose sound like an uncertain and almost-whiny manchild. And I understand that 4 years is a long time but I doubt it’s enough for him to make that switch in that short of a time. In fact, it would make more sense if the time skip between 1899 and 1907 resulted in said changes (since he’s the breadwinner and no longer has the gang and old guard to use as a crutch).

I like to think that's because the first game is when John has a mission, to get his wife and kid back. So in turn he's outwardly cold and collected. But in rdr2 he doesn't have so much of a mission just someone trying to make it in the world and survive.
I just dont care. Rdr1 john was the best. Idk why rockstar ruined his face in rdr2.

Funnily enough he suffers the same problem that Jack did in the 1st game, Rockstar took the model of the 2nd playable character and just fused it on the 1st. Jack ended up looking like a weird old man instead of a fresh young gunslinger, I think he may have entirely shared most of not all of Johns animations. The effects in RDR2 is you have this very strange, almost beefy looking John that was pretty obviously slapped on Arthur’s original model. It’s understandable that in RDR1 it was the way it was, Jack didn’t really have too much to do outside of the occasional stranger mission or journal challenge after his pretty brief story hunting down Ross. John has a ton story of content and cutscenes in the epilogue, you will be looking at him for hours. I have no idea how they let this happen. I know it’s nitpicky but we looked at a John that looked like John the entire game up until we got to play as him. It really irks me lmao.
Mr Morgan, maybe because the epilogue took place in 1907? I think John made the scar near his left eye between 1907-1911. Or did he get those scars because he got mauled by a wolf in 1899? Edit 2022: Of course he got the iconic scars by being mauled by a wolf in 1899!

Almost all of John's cowboy outfit looks good it's just changing a few things to make it look better like the gloves you have to change for the ones you get with Arthur and the spurs change them for the brown western rider spurs the rest are just details like the shirt on the chest and the open vest on the bottoms. Rockstar can fix everything in John with a simple update but sadly I doubt it will.
It would take less than a day to fixe everything thats wrong with him and they just can't be asked.
His face is like way too wide too. His shoulders are too wide, arms too big, and legs too skinny. Hate to say it, but the voice seemed off too. In RDR1 John had a deep voice but now in RDR2 it’s always a weird forced yell.

Rockstar has the ability to do just about anything they want with their games including giving John his own character model because they're the king of single player games. It's not that they can't do it or don't have the time, they just can't be asked to.

I know all of us here want John's original hairstyle in the epilogue. I've been writing to developers a lot via the RDO Feedback page about this, but it would be better if a lot more people started writing to them as well. I know there were attempts before and they did not work, but for this type of request we have to keep insisting and not lose hope, I know that Rockstar will add the hairstyle sooner or later but it also depends on us.
So I ask everyone who wants John's original hairstyle to write to Rockstar via the Feedback page.
I repeat, for this to be achieved, we must all unite and insist

The thing is: Rockstar doesnt listen to feedback like this after they release their game, They just leave as it is cuz they feel like it, There are some Life improvement changes that would be AMAZING like: No auto pick weapons, Make John John again not a John Morgan Mix, Better weight system and also Fix the god damn beard dammit, A year later and i still have not been able to grow a max beard

You should make a new save file (or start a new game) to normally grow max beard or use the Van Horn glitch.
I wish they gave us rifle holster from rdr1 because I hate getting my guns from horse.

All I want Rockstar to add is more clothes, clothing options, and style options for singleplayer and a second character slot for RDR2 Online. Also, they should really fix his original outfit to look more like the one in rdr1. They should add underarm shoulder gun holsters, ponchos and give you the option to take of your satchel and even holster. Oh ye, and add FUCKING Mexico and/or Undead Nightmare. They are milking GTA way too much, RDR2 Online and singleplayer can be something very big and even better if they listened to fans or actually cared about the game.
Ps another issue I found is that John Marston is missing dialogue when sprinting with his horse. Like no yeehaw or lest go boah audio. It's there but only activates when horse stamina is near low.
Also when you calm your horse they are only like 3 voice lines
They've broken the epilogue and it was clearly rushed before release, sadly.

The only explanation is that since this game is a prequel, it would make sense if he looked a bit different. It could be that he looked younger but I’m guessing that the developers wanted him to get a new look.

Great video. I used to be part of the group and was pretty happy when we hunted for his hair in the files. The closest console players can experience his hair is playing as his NPC model using save editing. As for when rockstar will fix this. I doubt it, it’s been two years since this whole event occurred and They won’t do a thing. I am however happy that along the way I made some great friends. Those who are even mentioned in this video :)

Tbh it seemed like they rushed on John Marston in Rdr 2.
The epilogue as a whole was rushed, they most likely ran out of time to fix any issues that arose with John's 1907 model, so instead of launching the game with a buggy model, or delaying the game, they decided to make him an arthur/john hybrid, which wasn't that bad on release. Sadly since then patches have made him Arthur with John's face, but they are most likely too busy with online to fix it unfortunately:(

You should make another video going into depth of John originally having his own 1907 player model in the beta, with his original clothes, hair, etc.
Johns body type and overall physique felt too similar to Arthur to me once you took the reins as him. In the first red dead, John was simply not a very tall and built type of guy yet something about him came off rugged and imposing. Yet once you play as him in red dead 2, his whole classic look comes off as a cosplay rather than genuine.

I mean me having a PC makes it not an issue since I have John’s original hair modded plus facial changes. Too bad there’s no mod support for consoles, but overall I wasn’t dissatisfied over some hair when I played it originally on console when it first came out

Of course on PC I have the original hair because I agree, it does look more badass but when I was on console I’d just give him a different haircut than Arthur

Why would they? They sold out to corps ( take two interactive ) and they only care about gta online. They invested some time into red dead online for a little bit but the online sucks imo.

Not just the look, but John's voice also feels a little off in RDR2. He talks like a normal person in RDR1 but in RDR2 he is like silent screaming the whole time.
Many people have used the excuse saying that his voice actor has been smoking a shit ton which is why he sounds different. But that's not the case, Rob's voice is exactly the same as it was in 2010 the reason it sounds different is because John yells alot more in RDR2 rather than speaking in his calm smart ass voice in the first game. There are many instances in RDR2 where he sounds exactly like he did im RDR1.

The reason for this, I've pondered, is because the voice over directors or whoever was in charge of directing the actors probably emphasized to Rob that John is a younger, brasher, angrier, impatient man. So his delivery is indicative of that. And I have to commend rockstar for that detail. However, aside from sacrificing his character model for the sake of time, the problem is that there is still something missing from his personality that convincingly portrays him being closer to his 38 year old self in rdr 1. I just wish his delivery in 1907 was a little more pulled back. Not much. Jussst enough to insinuate that this man has not only been affected by Arthur's actions, but Arthurs mind as well because John has his former comrades journal. I never see anyone comment on this detail. That's why I don't ever read Arthurs journal when I play as him in chapters 1-6 of the game. It enhances the experience of revisiting all the old event sites as John.
I remember playing as John a few months ago and then I stopped playing for awhile and then I played the game again and when I would shoot someone and it went into that cool slomo of him shooting he looked awful like he did at 1:16 . Why would they do that??

Also i swear he didn't have a strong blue eye color in red dead 1. it was just some regular brown color and that would also explain Jacks brown eyes in the first and second game. But now in the second game for some reason both John and Abigail have blue eyes but Jack has brown? I have no idea what Rockstar is trying to say, but i am sure that they are trying to say something..
Well, eyes can darken due to sunlight and john was under the sun, ranching 24/7 so, it makes sense

Kids can have different eye colours to their parents, plus John's eyes aren't even that bright, compare them to Arthur's. They're dark blue or hazel and it's normal for them to shine in the sun, also keep in mind that RDR 2 has more detail with things like that so it probably would have been the same in RDR 1 if there weren't graphical limitations back then. Honestly feel like a lot of you folk are needlessly complaining, the hair etc I get but come on.

1.00 is great for console since it’s John’s face on Arthurs head and it’s Arthur’s body model with slight tweaks with John’s proportions, his beard up to level 3 is his own, and his clothes fit, John’s angry look 😠, and finally working animations.
Meanwhile the current version with tons of corruption due to updates make him worse, Arthur’s face but wide and his body fully Arthur and his proportions, Arthur’s beard/blurry beard textures, baggy clothes, soulless eyes, surprised look 😐, baggy clothes, broken facial animations. Plus a ton of other issues especially clothes clipping ext.
And ofcourse pc has John Marston restored and enhanced to bring back John to his full glory.
I still find it hilarious they put so much thought into this game that even John has a different art and writing style in the journal for HUNDREDS of entries. Yet this simple fix they can’t do
I also wish his walking animation was more like RDR1 where he swings his arms much more.
If they remake rdr1 they must bring back john's og look in rdr2 or lets just hope in the next patch they bring back og john.

Archer Fordham has a cameo at the end of the game and apart from the closed jacket and belt and badge he's 100% accurate. A major character from the first game that only appears for a couple of minutes in the second game looks more accurate than the second protagonist.
Eh, even then, I think RDR2 Fordham looks more like his replacement who accompanied Ross when he sacked the Marston Farm, back in RDR.
