    Ron recalls:
“For a while in the early 2000s, I was editing game shows, which was a lot of fun. And as luck would have it, I was also part of the crew brought in to replace Whoopi Goldberg and her team, beginning with the fifth season of Hollywood Squares.
“Leading the new crew -- and my boss for the duration -- was Henry Winkler (along with his producing partner, Michael Levitt).
“Henry is one of those rare people who seems so polite in person that you think he couldn’t actually be that nice, and maybe it’s all a put-on. But it isn’t. Henry is one of the nicest, kindest people I’d ever want to meet.
“Over the following two seasons, we did 360 episodes of Squares. Apart from the usual show format, there were also special theme weeks (like TV crimefighters, classic game show hosts, blondes having more fun, plus the USC marching band, and much more).
“Though my all-time favorite episode just might be this, from early 2003.”
    ** SPOILERS **
“A typical episode of Squares shot in the studio would run a few minutes over its allotted time -- intentionally. That gave us room to tighten up the pacing as needed in post-production (by virtue of dozens of individual edits). Each show took about a day to do.
“As you’ll see, this was a very unusual episode -- because of its highly irregular nature, it came in more than 15 minutes(!) over its allotted time.
“In fact, there was so much material to work with, it took us two full days to choose all the right moments, and whittle it down to what you see here.”
"What made this episode especially unusual, is that where extraneous chatter is normally something we'd take out ... that was actually what we highlighted here -- even to the extent of removing some actual gameplay, which would otherwise never happen.
“When all was said and done, the big question we had afterwards was: Was Tom really fooled? All reports said that he was. And watching this again nearly 20 years later, it still looks to me that he was genuinely surprised by the whole thing. I’m actually amazed he held things together as well as he did. Tom is the epitome of cool, a consummate pro, and was a joy to work with throughout the series.
“Since this episode was quite unique in retrospect, the only thing I wish we’d done differently would have been submitting it for a Daytime Emmy award. Do you think it could have won?” :)

Tom seems like he adapts well under stress and pressure. You can see he's not afraid to mix it up with players (aka, non-celebrities) if the situation calls for it. Multiple times he can be seen trying to get Bob (I'll always know him as Bob from Married With Children, haha) to be quiet, especially when Carrie was "crying". He's subtly making a "button your lips" sign, giving the shush signal many times, and overall, trying his best to make Bob cease with the comments,.......although with all of the class, composure, and respect that someone who is probably EXTREMELY ANNOYED is at the moment. Let's just say he has amazing self control and restraint...and yet, he didn't walk away from the situation until long after trying to help and resolve it. He let the woman cry on him twice, tried his best to diffuse an impossible situation...and all throughout, still kept a calm and professional demeanor.
Very well done. Good prank...hiliaious... classic....
..but great reaction too. It didn't show him going off the rails or losing his cool at any time, because that's just not the kind of person Tom is. Great reaction... great prank.
    Great all round.

      Great observations! 👏
I agree -- Tom is a class act.
He wasn't always that way. He talks about it in his memoir, "I'm Hosting as Fast as I Can!". It's a fun read.
      www.amazon.com/Im-Hosting-Fast-Can-Hollywood/dp/0061765872
Basically, he used to have a very short temper ... and only got a handle on it eventually, after learning and practicing meditation. He learned how to become much more centered, including in the midst of very unusual situations.
And as you point out, this is a good example.
Thanks for your astute comments. 👍

Thanks for sharing the master, Ron. I've watched this more than a few times over the years, and I just picked up on something...
Coming out of the next-to-last commercial break, we went from a Sherri question (O blocked) to a Mario question (wasn't completed), then jumped to another Sherri question, which appeared to be part of the next game, when "Carrie broke down." That's how it was aired.
My question is about the actual sequence. Did the breakdown question really come first, Tom & company dealt with the drama, the question tossed (literally by Tom), and you restarted coming out of the break with another Sherri question (where O blocked), then Mario, then the reveal?

    • @media-ron
      @media-ron  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, @bainsey89 --
Great question! Very astute of you to ask.
As I recall, that order didn't change. The main "pull-up" (as it's called) going from Mario back to Sherry clearly led into the next game (since her square was now blank). As for Carrie's "breakdown", that was essentially the punch-line the whole gag led up to, and there wouldn't have been much reason in continuing once that was done.
Also around that point, Tom was clearly getting annoyed with Ed, so Henry decided that was the best place to end it (wisely so, as it wouldn't have been fun after that). We had more than enough material to work with by then anyway.
Does that help? Again, great question.
Thanks to you and all for watching.

    • @bainsey89
      @bainsey89 Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the reply, @@media-ron.
What tipped me off is that the money score was $1000-0, Ed leading, the first time Carrie called on Sherri. The score remained the same the second time Carrie called on Sherri, when everything "broke down." Since the score was the same both times Carrie called on Sherri, that had to be from the same game. If a new game were started, the score would have been $2000-0 or $1000-$1000 the second time Carrie called on Sherri.
So clearly, there wasn't a new game when Carrie called on Sherri the second time, but it was very smart to edit and move the breakdown to the end, followed by the reveal. That made for much better television, especially with the audience already knowing the game was not bona fide. It was a great April Fool's joke for TV, and we appreciate the footage and your insight.

      Ah, interesting.
Well, then I may be mistaken. It's been a bunch of years since we did this (plus hundreds of episodes more). I've also seen this final version far more times now than the original unedited footage. But yes, we did do quite a bit of editing for this one.
Agreed it makes better television. And now you've got me wondering ... so I'll have to keep an eye out, if I have any notes left over from post-production.
Excellent catch. Thanks, and for the good words!

      Hi, @onepacificgal -
Great question. I don’t recall specifically, in this case -- though tapings were usually a couple of weeks to a month prior to air, so I’d guess early March.
The air date might not have been obvious (partly because we’d do a whole week’s worth of shows in a single day’s shoot). But it would have been on various paperwork, and possibly shown on the monitors briefly at the outset of taping each episode.
In other words, it's completely understandable that the air date wasn't top of mind during each episode taping.
      Does that help?

P.S. Having said all that ... I was curious, and so managed to dig up the original production schedule.
I'd almost forgotten how much work needed to happen between taping (VTR) and air. So ~4-6 weeks was more typical. There's actually a long, carefully-choreographed, overlapping pipeline of all the steps necessary for pre-production, production, post-production, distribution and air ... for each of the 180 shows produced each season.
      📹 ✂ 🔉👏 🛰 📺
For episodes # 5131-5135, the schedule was:
      VTR: Sat. 2/22/03
      Offline editing: 3/10 - 3/14/03
      Producer's notes / lock picture: 3/19/03
      Online editing: 3/20/03
      Audio sweetening: 3/25/03
