Stephen Colbert brings his signature satire and comedy to THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT, the #1 show in late night, where he talks with an eclectic mix of guests about what is new and relevant in the worlds of politics, entertainment, business, music, technology and more. Featuring bandleader Louis Cato and THE LATE SHOW band, the Peabody Award-winning and Emmy Award-nominated show is broadcast from the historic Ed Sullivan Theater. Stephen Colbert took over as host, executive producer and writer of THE LATE SHOW on Sept. 8, 2015. - Zábava
When I was a little girl, I used to tell God jokes when I prayed. I thought he needed it, because I heard how hard other people asked for him work.
That's awesome.
That’s fantastic!
Aw, that was sweet! I bet He loved it. Do you still do that? (Staying childlike is a Godly thing to do...)
Steve Martin and David Letterman talking about late fatherhood recently. Letterman said no one told him how much fun kids are. That captures my feelings as a non-father. Sounds like you were one of lateral-thinking little tykes in your day.
I can imagine few things God would find more pleasing.
I believe that comedians helped save the lives of millions of us during these Trump tribulations, because if not for you we would have all gone crazy. 🤯
Well said.
💯!
Levity is the best cure for tragedy.
Preach!!
Or maybe we would have dragged that orange clown out of the WH way back when and we would be done with all this craziness a long time ago.
They both might be old but Biden is smart enough not to call Chicago the convention host a horrible city.
Especially after they tried to walk it back to say he was talking about crime… as a felon.
I thought it was Wisconsin that he insulted?😅
It's terrible, folks. Chicago's terrible. Ever heard of Alfonse Capone?
I thought it was New York City that he insulted?
@@fartingduck5316 The DNC is happening in Chicago. The OP is saying Biden isn't stupid to crap on the DNC host city.
My dear friend, the late Fr. Dave Mura, from the Rochester (NY) Diocese, was a clown and had a ministry called, "Fools for Christ's Sake." The message being when we smile, God smiles too. I'm glad our Pope recognizes the importance of humor for the human spirit. Thank you Stephen for representing US!
Absolutely agree 💯🙏🇺🇸🙏👏👏👏❤️👎🇺🇸👍
That makes me think of the real life patch Adam’s. He’s so incredible! Joy really does make our hearts lighter.
@@dash-x "Fools for Christ"? Sounds like renaming Christianity to fit into truth in advertising laws.
@@glenncurry3041humor is important. Eternal hell, where most humans spend eternity, is not funny.
After almost 2,000 years of mass murder, polytheism, and idolatry, the Pope can afford to smile. He's not bad, for a Catholic, but that's already a ridiculously low bar. Said with all due respect to decent Catholics.
The Bible says in Proverbs 17:22 that laughter is the best medicine. Keep doing ministry, Stephen!! You're great at it!!
why are they barely coming to laughter after all decades of so much secrecy, war, and injustice? What's next? He's riding space X? Okay Does proverbs also mention the devil disguised as an angel? Or does it mention church power, dominance over other beliefs and their greed is International. The Bible# book sold in the world. You would think that a lot less people would die of hunger with all this profit but instead, look at the golden Palace the pope lives in. The first class travel and all the royal treatments he must get. What a shame
Since most people will probably just read that and not bother to look it up for themselves, I want to clarify that what the verse actually says is "a joyful heart is good medicine" (in the NASB). Of course, there are a bunch of different translations, but you can look at 56 different translations on Bible Gateway, and not a blessed one of them uses the words "laughter" or "best".
@@Rookiebatman well, laughing makes my heart joyful, so I'm going to add that translation.
I have nothing against Stephen, but what “ministry” is it you believe he’s doing? 🤔
Better example (which I only know from VeggieTales): “A happy heart is good medicine, and a cheerful mind works healing.” - Proverbs 12:18
Loved that little dig at Conan, makes me so happy that the late night hosts are all so friendly with each other.
i was so happy for stephen when i saw he’d met the pope. like something good had happened to someone in my family ❤
Hi Marcella ! I guess with your first and last name you come from an Italian family. Many greetings from Italy ! 🇮🇹👋🤗
People who say that Stephen should have spoken to the Pope in Spanish since he's from Argentina, may have forgotten that Pope Francis is fluent in Italian (which is the official language of the Vatican City) and German, and is conversant in Latin (the official language of the Holy See), French, Portuguese, and English.
And his family emigrated to Argentina from Italy
Also the Pope 99% of times speaks Italian, at that meeting he spoke Italian.
The closed captions changed ‘keen eyed observers’ to ‘Canaanite observers’ 😂
What a Caananite observation!
can't you fix captions now?
🤣🤣
You're not the only one! Found it extra funny on account of this being a more religious centered clip.
@@Irena_SueHaving the munchies while watching a cooking show would be rough.
More of a drinking game. Try to match Child shot for shot. If you make it ten minutes, it counts as a win.
Forget about Milawaukee. Insulting the *_Swiss Guard_* must be the bravest thing Stephen has ever done on air.
Basically Gods hitmen
I got genuinely mad at that joke. Gotta rep my Swiss Heritage.
We are the only four Americans who know what the Swiss Guard is, I’m afraid.

What does God have to do with any of this? 🤔
@@eurowan My thoughts exactly. There's enough baptist god in the US at the moment without dragging another bigoted sect of the christian church into the mix.

When we visited Italy in 2012, and stopped by a Catholic middle school in Colle di Val d'Elsa, they were literally rehearsing Sister Act. We stayed to see the production in the nearby theater. Fantastic!
As an Italian, I can confirm that this film is still massively appreciated across the country, and I'm a young fan myself!
Apart from the cultural background, I think the voice acting was another key factor of the movie's success in Italy, since it did a great job in recreating the wit and the charisma of the original performances.
The movie “Sister Act” has been shown a lot of times on Italian television, and it is always occasionally broadcast.
Also some Italians (I mean ME) are in love with hip hop and can’t miss the wonderful young Lauryn Hill ❤️
@@beatrixkiddo7083 Un momento, quindi c'era anche Lauryn Hill nel film?
I love when Colbert makes it a point to introduce/chat with the band & guest musicians. These are some of the best & most creative talents~Just look at where Jon Batiste ended up? 🎶🙂🏆🎼
He is the best host . So grateful ❤
As an atheist I don't share your religious fervor, but I do understand that it means a lot to you.
Thank you for that. My dad is also, and he's a jerk about it. Respect goes a long way.
Not all of us have a god complex because of our atheism, oh the irony!
I am an atheist as well.. and I absolutely appreciate the big deal. Just from the history and anthropological sense, it is quite something. Especially if you are a believer, I can see how much bigger th deal gets.
As an atheist I would love to witness Ricky Gervais arguing with the man in the ridiculous outfit
@@beatrixkiddo7083 I'd pay money to watch that.
Laughter is healing, literally. Thank you!
How could God not love you, Stephen?
Stephen, you and your fellow comedians deserved that recognition from Pope Francis. congratulations!!
In my darkest days comedy has helped get me through.
I don't share Stephen's faith but 'keep making god smile" is a beautiful thought to hold onto
No contradiction there, then
@@SundaeExpress why the comma and the use of the word "then" A question mark would have been, sufficient?
@@michaelrobson3460 Nope, the comma is correct, unlike the one you placed between 'been and 'sufficient'. Incidentally, sentences start with capital letters, questions end with full stops and indicative sentences end with capital letters. You're welcome.
@@michaelrobson3460 PS; regarding your opening post, 'God' starts with a capital 'G' (even though he doesn't exist); and you need to pick either a single inverted comma or a double one and stick with your choice, instead of opening a quote with a single and closing it with a double. (And to reiterate, sentences end with full stops.) You're welcome.
@@SundaeExpress Yeh, could you help me with the spelling of "pedantic" too?
I was thrilled for you to be invited to see Pope Francis. I love also that Whoopie has visited him before. It makes me feel like a part of me got to share in the honor.

I was expecting “god” to sound and look like Morgan Freeman 😂

Do you know who “god” in the Bible is?
My favorite used to smoke a cigar.
He sounds like Brian Stack, which is good enough for me.
@@eurowan yes I do. That’s why I spelled the name in lower case letters and used quotation marks in my comment. I was referring to a role portrayed by a man in a movie. Not the Biblical Lord God.

"You want to make God laugh? Show him your plans!" - Old Irish Proverb.
I LOVE IT WHEN WE HEAR THE BAND!!!!
So proud of you Stephen for being able to meet the Pope! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💙💙💙
Love Louis and the Band!! Rock on!
I have no doubt... you definitely make God smile!!! 😊❤🙏
I think this is the appropriate time to DEMAND the return of Midnight Confessions.
I forgot about those! You're right, time for a revival.
What is that? I’m Italian and I had a catholic education. I know both about that… Is it like the midnight mass at Xmas?
@@beatrixkiddo7083its a comedy bit Stephen used to do where he starts by saying he's so busy he can't get to confession often enough so he asks the audience to hear his confession.
Then he pretends to be sitting in a confessional and admits to a weird list of stuff that isn't exactly sinful (but he does feel bad about them!).
It's always off beat, ironic, sarcastic, and funny (with a lot of political & self-deprecating humor).
He usually manages to have an alcoholic beverage hidden in the confessional as well...
At the end he asks the audience to absolve him and they forgive him in unison.
It's hard to describe but it was one of my favorite bits too!
My uncle got an audience with the pope, saying something like "I figured that's just what you do when you vacation in Rome." That's when I learned that my uncle is one of the 0.1%.
My condolences.
Nah. If he was Catholic and on his honeymoon, he got a special blessing.
@@lenawagenfuehr53 Nope, Jainist turned nonpracticing Methodist (protestant) and he'd been married for decades.
0.1% of what? Doesn’t matter because I won’t be coming back. But you could say what, otherwise people don’t know what you’re saying either. 0.1% of the rich? Or the smart? Or the most special because of a particular topic or subject. Is it a sport, a musical instrument? 0.1% could be anything, everything or nothing.
So what you are saying is no ordinary scum could ever hope to get close to this man. Cool. I’m also not interested in him getting close to me. Considering what the Catholics have done to children, all over the planet, for decades.
Just think. He got to talk with God's representative on earth, Peter Jackson, and now the Pope. His two favorite fandoms. (For first commandment reasons, we're not going to talk about order.)
"God's representative on Earth"? Why would an omnipresent being need an earthly representative? I mean if there actually were such a thing as a god.

There are many gods. For some the omnipresent being you mention, for others money, for others the orange julius, and for you apparently, being what the Italians call ritardo (which is not derogatory there bc it’s the words on train platforms for delayed).

God ..Must have humor..He created ..US..
It's a disgusting sense of humour, to be sure.
We need humor to uplift our spirits. Thank you, Stephen and all who met with Pope Francis. Most importantly, for me, I was so glad to discover Randy Rainbow on UTube. His parodies , spot-on humor, music, and performances were & still ARE Wonderful Breaths of Fresh Air & Laughter. Randy's autobigraphy book is hilarious , too. Randy Rainbow continues to be my God-send while navigating thru Orange Don, his aiders, abettors, and flatterers. Don's worse than chewing gum on the sidewalk.
BTW - the Pope is from South America, Argentina, he speaks Spanish and many other languages.
Joy is outdoors. Its not always on a screen or book. We need to appreciate what God is showing us, his beautiful creation. Go out people, free your bodies from your room or desks. Enjoy the morning and evening sun. Go to a rose garden. To hike. Bird watch. Ride your bikes to the beautiful mountains and breathe. God wants you to go out and find him in everything he created. Within yourselves as well because he created you. Feel God's joy by enjoying everything outside around you because before you know it, you're confined to a bed without appreciating God's grace.Luke 17:21The Kindom Of Heaven Within...
It's moving that The Pope said when you comedians make us smile that it makes God laugh too!
It made me tear up, knowing how much those words must have meant to all you, Amazing Comedians!
Bless your hearts and souls for making us laugh and usually at really difficult and hard subjects to face!
But some how you sprinkle a little magic on these impossible subjects and jazz them up to invoke laughter from your audience's.
Lightening up HEAVY and often Heartbreaking topics to drag them out into the public square and poke fun at whatever topics are currently in the news or happening globally.
You truly are brilliant at turning lemons into lemonade.

I'm pretty sure god is just that writer Stephen has come out from time to time to deliver deadpan gold and I'm not even slightly disappointed.
4:29 How much, Stephen? How MUCH sour cream?! It's not at all arbitrary. These things require precision, Mr. Colbert. One mustn't ruin the cake in pursuit of perfection simply due to missing data. You're better than this, sir.
When he mentioned it, I immediately took note to google a recipe using sour cream to find out the amount to add!
Also I have a friend who will add a box of pudding (dry of course) to regular cake mix when she didn’t feel like making a cake completely from scratch. It made it more moist, flavorful and folks thought it was scratch. Also doesn’t hurt to have a reputation as a baker in advance. 😜

Stephen Colbert was a light during some of those dark early covid days. That’s no small deal, and for that he should be proud
Pope Pancho (diminutive for Francisco in Spanish) is da bomb...he's got more crazy Cardinals and Bishops to keep straight than anyone should ever have to. May he live long and strong.

Born and raised Catholic. Struggling to balance the Churches History with my morality.
There’s an excellent book you should read called Bullies and Saints by John Dickson that you might find really helpful.
Lapsed Catholic here - I think it's important to look beyond history, at the church today and what it's doing today to atone for its past and serve better in the future. I think they've done incredible things lately, though they've still got plenty of work to do. Like Il Papa likes to say, "Who am I to judge?" If you knew my history you might judge me harshly, but then you'd never know me, only who I was in the past.
The Church’s history contains saints and sinners and everything in between
Pope Francis is very special.
