  • Making your own raisins is fun, gratifying AND tasty! This heritage skill is both easy to master and highly productive. While we have our own small table grape vineyard, you can get sweet seedless grapes from your favorite produce department, farmer's market or, if there's one around, local producer.
Grapes can be dehydrated using either an electric model, or by using solar drying racks. In this video, we show you both approaches! Drying grapes takes multiple days to make a delicious product that will store well, but the results are SO worth it!

Thanks for watching and commenting Giraffe space trails gamer. We lay a sheet of fiber glass window screen over the top of the grapes and binder clip them it down to keep bug, dirt and poop off. Hope your dehydrating efforts pay off! Best, DFJ

Val - the warmer the better when drying outside. When we filmed this video, we were having between 90 and 100 °F temps. The lower the temp, the longer the drying time. Enjoy! Best, DFJ

Hi. We have been having 80 to 96 degree and forecast for another 4-7 days. How many days does it take to completely dry them? Thanks in advance and Godspeed from South Louisiana 🐊⚜️

In our case, it took about a week of clear, sunny weather, bit breezy, and turning the raisins about 3x over the process. I hope that helps! Best, DFJ

Took me til my early 20s to realize that raisers are dehydrated grapes lol

Yes, I know. It's like magic when they start to turn and when they are done they are amazing!! They will keep in a mason jar for over a year un-refrigerated. DFJ just build a solar dehydrater out of a pastry rack that he was given by friend that is a restaurant owner. Look for the video on it coming out soon! Best, Dirt Farmer Maggie

Thanks for writing. We have several varieties in our vineyard - red, pink, white - not purple. We dry them all together and it's a party in your mouth with the differing tastes together. Best to you! DFJ

Electric power dehydrator is a terrible idea, such a waste of energy and CO2. Outside natural method based on sunshine is the only rational way to do it.

Agreed! Watch for a new video featuring a solar dehydrator that DFJ has made out of an old bakery rack from a friend's restaurant. It's completely covered with window screen to keep bugs out and features trays for making fruit leather as well as screens to dry raisins and other fruit products. Best, Dirt Farmer Maggie
