  • www.crosstrainingenduro.com Eight enduro riding tips for the everyday dirt rider. What happens when an average rider decides to become a better rider? Three years ago, Coxy made this decision. Since then he has been to various enduro coaching classes. Into enduro riding? See all our dirt bike videos for dirt riding tips. He started to enter the bronze class of hard enduro events. Coxy still rides for fun, so he hasn't gone crazy with training. But he has definitely focused on developing his skills. This was my first ride with him in three years, so I'm keen to see what we can learn from his progress. Our channel now had hundreds of dirt bike videos covering reviews, and dirt riding techniques. Search our channel for dirt riding gear too. Our dirt riding tips also include wider topics such as the best dirt riding boots. Many riders just enjoy the fun side of riding, and aren't interested in becoming better riders which is fine. But I remember watching Coxy on our Canadian trip three years ago. Every morning there was coaching. Every afternoon there was a social ride. The funny thing was almost everyone forgot their morning lessons and were still riding with bad technique in the afternoon. Not Coxy. He was completely focused on applying the coaching throughout the ride. And I could see him rapidly improving throughout the week. Coaching is the easy part. Applying it until it becomes an engrained habit takes a long time and dedication. Want to learn to ride fast? First learn to ride slow. Many of us think that big handfuls of throttle, roosting and sliding out of corners will make us faster. But the best long term strategy is ride slowly with good technique, then bring in the speed later. Coxy has taken this to heart. Body position. If you sit all the time you are just a dead lump of meat slowing the bike down. But once you stand and move your body around it's a dynamic part of speeding things up. Watch Coxy on this climb. Standing then sitting. Moving from side to side. Constantly moving to maintain balance on this tricky climb. I am sitting due to my spine fracture and fail as a result. Low revs, higher gear. Inexperienced riders often think noise equals speed. Wrong. Focus on being really smooth by riding in a higher gear and practice slipping the clutch as you come out of corners. Don't bring in the higher revs until you are ready to handle them. You never hear Coxy rev his bike unless he has to. Pick good lines. Focusing on technique and being smooth also gives you time to pick better lines. Using your head instead of your right wrist means you get to choose where the bike goes, instead of uncontrollable wheelspin and just hoping you stay on the track. Carry your corner speed. This naturally flows into carrying your corner speed. Don't accelerate hard and then brake hard initially. Stay smooth and carry as much speed as possible into corners. Brake hard and late. Anyone can twist the throttle and accelerate hard, at least on smooth tracks. What really sets the experienced riders apart is braking hard, braking late AND carrying their corner speed! Most of us will never need to learn this for everyday riding. But you'll need it if you get serious about riding faster. Get coaching. You can learn a fair bit from videos, but coaching really pays off. We can't count the times we have corrected someone's body positioning and they say "But I was doing that!" Without feedback it's surprising how often you think you are doing right, but you are reinforcing bad technique you will need to unlearn later. Exercise. Good technique will conserve energy, but the faster you go the more draining it gets. And as you get tired the risks of crashing go up exponentially. Do your body a favour and exercise regularly, eat well, and look yourself. You will learn faster and safer if you stay within the edges of your comfort zone. One thing is for sure, Coxy has progressed in leaps and bounds. Over the past three years he has definitely overtaken me in many respects due to all these reasons. If you are planning on developing your skills I hope you can learn from his example too. This private property has a lot of steep climbs, lets jump on board with Coxy and see how he goes.
This gets seriously steep. Most of us end up looping the bike or laying it down to avoid rolling back downhill. Come on, Coxy. Second try. It's easy to lose your steering with the front light end and just run off the track. If you miss a gear change that's usually the end of your climb. I stuff things up and Coxy flies past me. That's enough from me. Now I will leave you with a few minutes of riding at one of the hard enduros. My brother and I were marshals and we were on our siting lap of the prologue track. So there's nothing extreme here, just great single track through some scenic hills in northern New South Wales. Enjoy!

It does feel great when you see that you have made progress. Two years ago, I was a shit rider, now I am comfortable saying I am delightfully mediocre. In two more years, I would like to be decent. I'm in better shape than I ever have been, and every day on two wheels is the best day ever since developing a bit of confidence. Wanting to get better was probably the best thing I ever did, apart from marrying my wife, and having my kid I guess.

Man that exercise tip really hit close to home today. While riding today I realized how bad I was out of shape and how much it showed on my riding. I couldn't stand up for as long or hold on as well. This lead to me being less confident and not giving enough throttle, or sitting when I should have been standing which lead to many tip overs.

Unfortunately four strokes would be constantly overheating on our typical rides, Mark. And stalling a lot. And taking a fair bit more energy due to the top heavy weight etc. Our focus is hard enduro so we'd only be making it hard on ourselves with bikes less suited.

This is 100% Jarvis. Applies to all manner of technical activities. Feels way better to be in 100% control but slow and deliberate than flat out and all over the shop hoping dumb luck will get you through. If you can nail it perfectly at a slow controlled pace, speed will come naturally. Maybe you can do a video on pacing.
