I must have gone through what seemed like a million YT videos looking for this effect, and although I have the tools to make it, I would prefer to use something that I know is far superior to anything I could make. Problem is, that all the ones I found seemed to lack that extra little level of realism that is needed to sell the effect. Yours however, has that realism, and level of detail that I have been looking for, and I thank you for taking the time to make it, and for letting all of us use it.

I'm getting an expression error in AE2019 in the Size channel of the "master" and "S2". "Can't Use This Param Type."

Great tutorial. But the linked project file doesn't work properly anymore. The expressions have a bunch of errors in the new version of after effects. So you can't export the video.

Blown away! (Pun intended). Nicely done! I have to say tho, if the effect is rising from the bottom, then the bigger remaining chunks of "upper body" should plunge downward, and not stay suspended as if to defy gravity. (It bugged me that Nick Fury was still talking and activating the pager while half of this head was already gone at the end of the Avengers movie.) Apart from that, a hugely cool and useful effect. :)

I did that deer in the most complicated way you can imagine - but there are some better tools out there like DUIK (rainboxprod.coop/en/tools/duik/ )that can help with things like that. The 3D way I created this deer was just basically like creating a paper sculpt with flat 3d layers.
kind of a bummer that the FG freeze frame's before the disintegration process

There's no real secret to creating a depth map - just a buncha time involved. A good way to start is by mimicking a topography map. You can do that by making sure you have your subject on their own layer - then duplicate that layer - then use a feathered eraser to erase things that are the farthest back. Then duplicate that layer and erase things that are medium far away, and so on and so forth. If you fill all these layers with white, and arrange them front to back, you can make the opacity of the top layer high, and then the decrease the opacity of each subsequent layer. You'll have to feather and adjust this stuff a bunch until it looks like a CG depth map. Hope that's a bit helpful.

You didn't say what the new microphone is. I own the Rodelink stuff already, I thought it might have been the NT1 but it doesn't look like it.

I think the only way the effect could be better is if you precomped the layers and then stacked two of those precomps on top of one another; then time remap the bottom precomp to offset the effect just a few milliseconds behind the top precomp. Then make both precomps 3d, offset the top precomp on the Z just a tad, add a light and cast shadows.
Perhaps changing the wind direction in the second comp to move in the Z would help with the depth as well.
By doing that, you might get more Z depth in the effect, improving the realism. Right now, without any kind of shadowing to add depth, it's a great effect but kind of flat.
Just my two cents, of course.

Exporting the dustify + particular comp crashes After Effect every single time. Anyone else having this issue? Fix?
I found a workaround by sending directly to Adobe Media Encoder. But should it take 4+ hours to export a 10 second clip? That doesn't seem right?!?

So Impressive! I want to achieve my effect like you shown in particular version at 1:51 love the details on face but in the Dustify project file it's a little different. can you help me to achieve that level of realism? I mean those detailed integration effect on face.
In what way is it different when you try it?

i try to use it, but the problem is with the particles in after effects particular plug-in, it just don't work, it glitches

After I downloaded your project and opened it, immediately gave an error in the expression:
This project contains an expression error: error 1 of 1
Error at line 1 in property 'Size' of layer 6 ('PARTICULAR') in comp '4-DUSTIFY_PARTICULAR'. Object of type Object found where a Number, Array, or Property is needed., an expression was disabled as a result of an error.
I didn't even have time to change anything. Error immediately when opening. What can be the problem? I opened the project DUSTIFY TEMPLATE CC (13)
I found out this is a Particular version issue. If updating Particular doesn't help - Here's the solution:
1. Unlock layer 6, find the problem expression and COPY it.
2. Clear that expression.
3. Alt/Option click on that property to enable expressions, and see what the default value is --- effect("Particular")(#) ---Take note of the "#"
4. PASTE the expression back, but change the # in the initial --- effect("Particular")(#) --- to match whatever it said in step 3.
I am getting the same problem. When I follow your solution the # I get when making a new expression is "Size". If I put "Size" into the expression the error message goes away, however, I cannot see the foreground image at all I only see the particle effect. I have linked in your photoshop layers correctly and the foreground image shows in comp "FG" but does not show at all in "DUSTIFY" or "DUSTIFY_PARTICULAR". I am using the latest AE (as of 04/10/18) and Particular 14.1. Any ideas on a solution... thanks for your efforts

When I use the 100% After Effects one, it works perfectly but if I use the Trapcode Particular one, the particles in the background are gigantic! If you give me an email so I can contact you, I can send an image. EDIT: It is fixed. I only updated my Trapcode Suite just to see what happened. it was fixed.
He there, I love this tutorial, but do you mind also making one on how you got all this clean plates from the movie references? That's the most mindblowing to me... Or is there now something quick and easy you can do that I missed (on and off again AE user)?
I didn't really think to go over that. Here's that process:
1. Motion-track, and stabilize the original footage.
2. Grab as many stills of BG as you can from moments when the characters aren't covering them.
3. Paste them together in AE or Photoshop. Clone stamp out the rest and save a clean plate.
4. Use your motion tracking data to paste your plate over the original subject - probably adding some noise to the still image so it has some life.
The clone stamping section is hard - but sometimes you'll get lucky - like in Big Lebowski, the previous shot had the characters entering, so I could grab an almost complete clean plate from earlier. The ESB footage was harder - and I just had to pick and grab frames from other sections and cobble them together, then rotobrush out the subjects.
Thanks for the quick reply, as I feared, it's still hard work! :( Did you ever try the "new" roto-brush feature instead of rotoscoping the characters? That might also help? The one time I used it, it actually worked pretty well, but it was on a very forgiving background (basically one solid color)...
CZiNTrPT - I did indeed use the rotobrush tool to cut out the characters. I usually have pretty decent luck with the Roto brush - though sometimes the popping edges slip past me at first then I notice them forever later.
Haha, I feel you. At the last project I was talking about, I was rotobrushing literal letters and painstakingly redid it over and over again until no more popping out edges were to be seen at all. just to replace it then with big rectangle logos. so I could have just pasted over the letters anyway (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻ | ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Røde means red in Danish, and it is definitely not pronounced roads.
The R sound in pronounced down in the throat, the Ø sounds like the i in bird, and “de” is pronounced like “the”, like in the car.
Another thing Red Giant would be Røde Kæmpe in Danish.

Let me know if this got it - the Particular global parameters are indexed differently each version, it turns out - so this is the best way to address it.
Yeah, I saw your reply below about that, none of that helped, still giving me the error... The only way I found around it was to find out what values appear in both entries at Start and End points, clear out the expressions and use Keyframes instead...

I'm a Complete beginner at after effects. I honestly have no fucking clue how to do this and I've watched the video 15 times. Don't know what to replace in the template. Plus I have no green screen.

Well it's working, I was opening probably the wrong version (CC 13), but even if it works AE highlights some errors in the expressions
