    As soon as you see the screws missing and dented/bent heat pipe you stop and get DELL to address the improper factory assembly under warranty. There's no point in trying to 'fix and retest' anything with damaged/missing hardware.

    • @_willalexander.88
      @_willalexander.88  Před 6 lety +3

      Mr Smartypants totally agree. It's simple enough for me to replace the heat sink but I'm waiting on a phone call from dell to discuss more. Someone should be fired for this...

    • @Mr_Smarty_Pants
      @Mr_Smarty_Pants Před 6 lety +1

      I agree. It's one thing to have a bent heat pipe...that alone will possibly impede the fluid flow of heat pipe....but the missing screws right next to chips....now you have minimal contact force over top of chips. I'm sure they will fix it. (btw i may have sounded like a jerk in my comment above...sorry if thata's how it came across) Also, thx for the in depth videos.....i've been stewing over a replacement for my current DELL XPS...i'm still running an L501X...the 9570 is on my short list & these vidoes help a lot.

      I got my old L502x sitting next to me lol. Might crack that open and apply the thermal pad on it. It should be do but I think its more involved to take that laptop apart. I love my 9570 but this new heat sink and must bc thermals are not as they should be. I paid a lot, and deserve better then this.

Ya the L501/2X are quite alot more nnvolved to tear into.....i replaced the bottom chassis on mine because i dropped it and it cracked one time, it doenst really come apart very easy.

    I just successfully repasted my i9 9570 with much trial and error. Original temps on the same intel benchmark maxed at 92 with Max Core around 3.1ghz. I repasted and the temps maxed at 99 with loads of thermal throttling. The heat sink is super picky. Mine lined up no problem (no bending, had all the screws) but if you over tighten those screws, the temp goes right up. Get them finger tight, as soon as you get resistance, stop. I also used the car tire lug nut technique by tightening the opposing screw (not exactly opposing, but as best as you can).
    After I figured that out, I repasted with Arctic Silver, which made 0 difference. Maxed at 95 degrees. Used it for a couple days and still tested at 92 degrees. Repasted with Grizzly Kryonaut with nice gains. Max at 84 degrees.
    Undervolted by -0.100 mv for another 3-4 degrees. (I had a successful undervolt at -0.150, however I thought my computer was shutting down at the 30 min mark. Apparently, in the power management settings the computer was set to hibernate at 30 minutes even thought I couldn't see it as an option when I went into power management in the control panel (you need to go into Advanced Power Settings to turn it off). I turned that off and no problems. I just haven't revisted the -0.150mv since my machine is working great.)
    I was VRM throttling as well so I bought an arctic thermal pad. Make sure to get the 1.5mm and 6.0 W/mk. I then it into small strips and put them in stacks of 3 on all the VRMs.
    End of the day, no thermal throttling or VRM throttling at 79-81 degree max and a 3.9ghz max core frequency. Very successful but took time and trial/error.

      thanks for the feedback. I did think I heard something about not to overtighten the screws. I did get tighten them. I really don't want to return my laptop but im waiting to see what they can offer or do. If I get a new heat sink I think ill just install and move on. Had high hopes for this video helping others, instead I just found out that dell screwed me lol.

  • @DasDoubleD

    I changed the paste on my 9570, and... The results:
    CPU no longer thermal throttles, and with -0.115v, the CPU hits 3.8-3.9ghz all-core turbo AND KEEPS IT THERE at 85-88C. GPU can hit 75C however, with some overclocking, the score for the 1050 Ti Max-Q went from 975 to 1157.
    I used Arctic Ceramique 2, not the best paste but it is non-conductive and takes about 72h to cure fully, so temps might be better later on.
    Don't use thermal pads, that's stupid, plus with the lack of mounting pressure and substandard material, you botched the thermal and CPU performance of your laptop.

  • @Justin-C
    @Justin-C Před 6 lety +5

    Missing screws aside - based on the "Before" (~98c / 3-3.5GHz) and "After" behavior (~97c / 2-2.5GHz), you actually HURT your CPU cooling (unless your performance profile changed in the meantime).
    Explanation: Intel Turbo basically puts the 'pedal to the metal' ("Max GHz") while staying at or below the thermal limit (~98c). The fact that it's only running at 2-2.5GHz after indicates that your cooling performance has significantly diminished. Undervolting works because it helps keep the temperatures lower (which means more room for "Turbo").
    I advise being careful how you explain the problem to Dell. They don't take kindly to customers messing with things beyond changing RAM/SSD, and may claim you've voided your warranty. Before they service it, you may want to re-paste with paste that looks similar to what they use.
    PS: Thermal pads suck. For the best cooling, what you want is the thinnest layer of (high quality) paste as possible.
    PS 2: I have an XPS 9570 (8570H + 16GB + 4K) - it's been absolutely phenomenal.

    I've had a XPS 15 9560 for a year now - a laptop praised in nearly every review. But it's the little things that aren't mentioned in those classic reviews that can really screw up the whole experience with your laptop. Problems you only encounter if you use it day to day. So mine already had random blue screens, got a thousand degrees hot in bag while closed of course, shuts down while working on unsafed work. You can figure these things out. But it takes time and effort and it really shouldn't be that way when you spent almost 2000€ on a laptop. Just my thoughts on this.

    Good video, Dell has definitely had some thermal issues. I was on the Dell website looking for a "New XPS 15". It's the i9 version with touch 4k display fully loaded version. Spoke with the Dell CSR and was looking to order one. I was told that delivery was about 30 days. When asked why such a long delivery date...all the sales rep told me is that they are really particular about quality control. Not more mentioned during our conversation. Later, while reading customer feedback and comments on their website...a common theme was overheating and throttling. Next call to the same Dell CSR, when confronted about the poor feedback, he in fact admitted that overheating was an issue and Dell had issued an Stop ship until the problem was addressed.
    For me, being a IT service tech, I am really skeptical moving forward on a laptop that's around $3K and has the potential of overheating???
    I have decided to go another route.
    Letmelive, in your case with your laptop, I would be contacting Dell support and addressing the bent heat spreader and missing screws. Those components are extremely critical for the correct operation of the machine. As you have modified the heat sink components (removing the spreader and replacing the thermal compound), Dell may decline warranty on this issue, but in the least, obtain a new heat spreader along with the entire screw kit for it. Clean off all the components, use Arctic Silver thermal paste to redo the chips, and reapply the new heat spreader. Tighten all screws correctly going in a criss cross pattern until all are secure. This thermal issue should improve over what you are seeing.
    Hope this helps...good luck...

      Ace Storman getting my new heat sink and screws today. I will install and do a follow up video. The dell CSR was helpful and was very inclined to help as much as possible. He even discussed with the XPS engineer and he said he was terribly sorry for my experience and was really happy how I was taking on the task of replacing myself and wish all his customers would take similar actions. If you consider that I would need my laptop replaced or send me the part to fix myself, I think they would want to exhaust all options before the return process depending on the person and reason of course. 2days later and I'm getting my new heatsink. So at least they acknowledged the issue and are taking action. I also am using throttle stop now over XTU. More control seemed to help. Stay tuned!

    • @acestorman4334
      @acestorman4334 Před 6 lety

      Yes, I think you got a handle of the process. Besides the CPU and the GPU, I think there are two or three smaller IC's that have a white thermal pad on them. Make sure you got those covered as well. Criss cross the screw tightening process and do not over tighten and your golden. Good luck and let us know how thinks work out.

      when i repasted my laptop, i did a trial application first. i cleaned the cpu and gpu, put the new paste on, tightened the heating screws, heated it up with a heat gun and let it sit for a bit. took off the screws again, lifted the heatsink, looked at the thermal paste coverage, taking note of where the thermal paste spills over and where the die had no thermal paste. i then cleaned off the trial thermal paste application and repasted it again, using my findings to guide me on how much and what pattern to use with the thermal paste application. spreading the thermal paste with a spreader is bound to create air bubbles which is why i will always avoid that technique.

    Show them the original video, czcams.com/video/hnPErdzljew/video.html that shows the screws where missing and the heatsink was bended.

      LETMELIVE mine had the digitalizer cable pinched between the hinge and the aluminum cover. The quality control from Dell is not as good as Apple. It's sad, but truth.

      That's what these (and many other ultra-thin) performance laptops are designed for. They're designed to run as fast as Intel Turbo allows while staying at or below ~98c.

    wow! quite a bad assembly job from dell. just don't waste more time and send it back to Dell. of course, I don't think you should mention you removed the heat sink...if I read the screenshots well, your efforts basically endup lowering the CPU speed giving the poor initial assembly job dell did...what a disappointment...are you still in the return window?
