    "How to become a great architect" is something that's never talked about in school; it isn’t a class. Sometimes students assume that school will make you a great architect and are horrified to find out they were sadly mistaken once they graduate. They are left in the professional field unprepared and not knowing what steps to take next. In most cases this causes the student to lose faith in themselves and forces them to choose more “realistic goals”.

      Kcaz Stalin I’m also a sophomore wanting to become an architect. My school has a specified program with 2 classes for sophomores related to design. One is product design and one is architecture. I’ve been struggling on which class I like better, because product design is super fun and definitely more art related. But architecture is more computer based and gets kind of boring. But last night I had a spark where I had the sudden urge to begin drawing houses in 2 point perspective after watching multiple CZcams videos on drawing houses. So I think I’ve finally figured out that I truly want to become and architect.

    Amazing content man. Came at just the right time for me. In architecture school right now and have been feeling the demotivating effects of others who seem to always want to tell me my goals are unachievable. It feels strange to see that in a field like this with so much potential for passion and creativity so many people end up doing such boring things. Seems like the odds are stacked against you to do anything worthwhile. But this reinforced my motivation to continue to strive for those crazy goals in the hopes that one day I can do something meaningful out in the world of architecture.

    When I took the state architectural license exam in 1974, I passed 6 out of the 7 parts. I failed the 12- hour design problem which was a library. I was deeply disappointed upon learning about my test results and I expressed this disappointment to my boss at the time. He replied, "I bet that you designed it." "Yes," I responded. "That's why you failed," he said. "Next time, just solve the problem. Make a rectangular box, put a simple roof on it, draw some regular rectangular windows at the appropriate locations, and make the building entrance a recognizable point of entry. Keep it simple." On my second try 12 months later I did exactly that. No design. I applied the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle and I passed with a 90% score. Lesson learned at a cost, but I went on to own my own firm and I'm now retired. I didn't become famous or rich, but I enjoyed my chosen profession and my clients loved my work. There's not much of a better reward than that.

    There is one thing you didn't mention: having goals/dreams is pretty cool, no doubt about it but your goals need to be coherent. Im not an architect nor a student in architect neither but by experience I do know if I've a lot of pretty good dreams, mots of the time they are impossible to reach. Why ? Because I forgot to define the methods to reach them, because I didn't use properly brain to think how it would be possible and whith all the ressources I could have, if it's relevant or not.
    In the other hand, you're right: Hanging out with people who constantly are dubitative about your skills is annoying and a waste of tim. Sometimes your closest friend might be breaking your nuts because they do care about you and want the best for you, in their perspective's view.
    Moreover, you need the creativity of the other people around you as you mentionned, but here, im talking about other student you're working with. Seeing their work might be disturbing when you realise theirs is far better than yours. I experienced this while in a design school.
    The only moments I was able to do cool things it was when im at home and I close all the contact (friends, others students, music, deviantart.....) so that i cannot be disturbed. Then when i got an idea or a couple of idead, i could use references. I do know if im using references immediately i would be influenced by them i will be out of the topic.

    since i was teen i saw some dreams when i was sleep like 5 times a year. it has been few years. this year i suddenly realized that. i have no idea how can i describe how crazy these places are and i do remember them. god i dont know how can tell what i mean while i cant understand why is this happen for me. i am not good at drawing or numbers at all just creativity. but there is sth, i am not just intrested in that area. i love observing new things and the world around me. cause of all these things i planned to study biotech which is wonderful and then learn architecting and use nature, creativity,technology and biology to create a very new aspect while i am not really limited in only one specific job.
    how do you think? by the way i am not from a expansive country so things and the process of making things happen are so hard even for leaving the country.
    i have about 2 dreams and they came to my mind without invitation. i dont know if my desires are true or not but they all what i have. and if i see them while others not then i should do them and that would be right. right now i am studying to enter my university.

    is there a misconception on what architecture is or what architects do? because I took the drafting side of architecture and enjoyed it a lot, but my architect friends tell me that they do more calculating and less drawing/designing. I dont like do many calculations, and would prefer to have the engineers do that haha so thats why Im in drafting over masters for architecture

    • @Moochers
      @Moochers  Před 5 lety +4

      Yea there is a misconception if you're talking to people who didn't study architecture. This is what happened to me. Architecture is about designing buildings: taking into consideration the environment , location, well being of others, site, materiality,budget, etc. What takes place in an architecture firm can be in the range of drafting (computer aided) sketches (by hand or computer) diagrams, massing studies , model making , generating plans - all this very similar to what you do in school. You also see alot of marketing and proposals being done for project pursuit , site visits, meeting with clients etc... calculations though are done by engineers. So if you enjoy drafting, you will have the opportunity to do so in an architecture firm. Some firms don't draw or sketch as much so in this case your friends could have a point. But calculations and math in general is not the main role of the architect. Its important to research firms you are interested in working with when the time comes, as I said in the video. this way you could choose a firm that will provide you with opportunities you most enjoy. Cheers!

      @@Moochers I finished my drafting course a while ago, should I pursue my masters? Auto cadd is what I did mostly, and some sketchup. It's definitely great to see and show your perspective of what an architect actually does. Thank you

    • @Moochers
      @Moochers  Před 5 lety +3

      @@Flovust that's a tough question to answer but a great one nonetheless. The reason it's tough to answer is because I wouldn't want to help you make a decision that you may regret in the future. That's why with my channel I try to provide as much information as I can to inform you guys so that you guys make the decisions. Anyway, i do think a masters in architecture is an awesome degree to pursue; it's what I have. But I thi k you should only pursue it if for the right reasons. What I mean is : I've always heard people say " I want to become an architect because I want to design buildings ". You will design alot at school but chances are when you start working you may not be able to design for years. If you're okay with that then I say go for it. I think you should pursue architecture if you like buildings in general. If you would like to help put buildings together without actually being recognized forever. It's kind of like people who like cars. Some people like to drive fancy cars, others like to fix cars, others enjoy the thought of designing the car. Architecture is more like the second and third version of the car enthusiasts. You'll be working on buildings every day. Sometimes you'll draft windows for a week or 2. Other times you'll only be drafting bathroom details. Some weeks you'll be doing renders etc, you think you get the idea. In your case what I would do is visit a few local firms. Ask for a tour of their offices if possible. tell then you're interested in the career and want to know more about it. Learn as much as you can while visiting the firms but dont let them convince you architecture is or isn't for you. I believe many firms will enjoy having you come in and show your interest in the career. I hope I didn't confuse you!

If you dont know how to value your work and yourself and your time as an architect, an employer especially wont. Christopher Campos I’m also in 10th grade, and my school offers an architecture class where you had to interview to get into. But besides that, from advice I’ve heard, I would most definitely take some sort of drawing class and DRAW SOMETHING EVERY DAY. Because as a design student, you want to be able to express your ideas out onto paper as well as using digital software. Some programs that we are using right now are revit and autocad. You can actually download revit and all these other programs from autodesk for FREE at home on a computer preferably or a laptop. All you have to do is put in some information proving you attend a school, etc. And you will get a license to own the programs until you graduate high school. Here’s the link, www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/revit I would 10/10 recommend you to download some of these programs and teach yourself by watching CZcams videos, or by going onto a website called Lynda.com and making an account and searching videos about the programs. They have great tutorials there. But it’s good to get an idea on how to use these programs so that you can get ahead in college when they teach the other students how to use the programs. I would also take a public speaking class so that you can get more comfortable with speaking if you aren’t already. I hope this helped!

    So I’m currently a sophomore interior design major at Winthrop University and heard about Florida International University and their architecture program. I was fully set on attending Winthrop for my four years and going from there but I can’t shake the idea of this other amazing opportunity.
    I want to think about that school since I could get a masters in architecture and a minor in interior design in 5 years oppose to a bachelors in interior design in 4 years (well 2.5 now) but something feels wrong about doing that for some reason.
    I am considering applying just to see if I would be accepted as a transfer to see if it’s a feasible option.
    I know you don’t know me but I was wondering if I could get your opinion on this...

    • @Moochers
      @Moochers  Před 4 lety +1

      I think you should apply. If you don't apply you will always think about the "what if". Just apply and that will buy you some time.
      In the meantime, you have to think about what it is you want. There are pros and cons to everything. So the nice thing about FIU is that you will get a Masters Degree in Architecture. The degree is nice, but do you feel like you need it ? That's up to you to decide. Getting a Masters in architecture is going to cost you more time and way more money so you have to try to justify that. One of the reasons you want to have a degree from an accredited school is if you would like to become a licensed architect. If you just want to work on buildings behind the scenes, drafting plans, then it doesn't really matter if you have that degree or not.
      It's very important that you understand that I am not trying to push you in any specific direction. If you choose to get a Masters in Architecture from FIU, I think that is a WONDERFUL decision - as long as it is YOUR decision. My advice is that you research it as much as possible so that you make an informed decision. How do you research? Call firms and ask, call schools and ask, go on Reddit and ask. No one will be mad or annoyed at you for asking :D
      I wish you luck!

    Have you ever met any architect that has a background in civil/ structural engineering? I've been wanting to do architecture since I was in middle school but I did my undergraduate studies in structural engineering. I'm now planning and researching to resume my passion in becoming an architect by applying to graduate school for Architecture. I've never heard of anyone with both backgrounds so I was just wondering if (in your opinion) it's even possible? Especially getting into grad school since I don't have a portfolio nor the undergraduate architecture background like most Masters students in the program.

      I don't remember the last time that I met someone with background in either field. I know that Santiago Calatrava (famous architect) is both an architect and structural engineer. This has helped him create amazing projects around the world because of his knowledge in design and how to build what he proposes. I think having more knowledge in other fields can only help you, rather than hurt you.

So currently i am 18 years old, i do not have a fool diploma from a school, but i want to try. Do you think there is any chance to get work experience in a real architecture firm if i do not have any familiar architects, so basically, i just email some random companies, maybe even BIG, why not? So what do you think about that, coz my school uni coordinator said that it is unlikely.

      Ramit Inmah asol I’m not an expert but you could take architecture related classes at school if there are any. If not, physics, algebra, calculus, trigonometry, statistics, and art are a few of the many classes you could take. Other than that, practice at home, pay attention to the historic or modern buildings you walk by and take notes or do a study on them, and just improve your time management skills in high school so it’ll be easier in college to adjust to.
