  • 2018 BMW R1200 RS Motorcycle Review - Thanking the proven boxer 1200 engine in to a porty configuration, this is a sportsbike for the rest of us - an actual comfortable seat and position, without the rear pegs but with a forward lean and excellent cornering and ride.

    Great review from nice reviewer.

    The RS has 3 different seats available. The tallest Sport seat is for longer legs and allows shifting front to back and side to side, I.e., no nut problems.
    I am 6 foot 4. Great fit for me. Fantastic bike for sport touring. Had mine since August

      What's your inseam ? Sometimes too much seat height kills my footing, I'm 6'+ but got a torso longer than the average human male.

    Well done Bryan! I'm with you on the digital tach. I like the one on my RT much better...straight up needle is 5500 RPM. which is a perfect shift point for mine.

    Great review. I'm considering this to replace my Kawasaki 1400 GTR (one day). I saw one at the dealership last week and loved the look of it.

      robcig I've considered many other bikes but think I'd regret selling the Kawasaki. Wish I could have two bikes at the same time. Always liked the boxer.

    100% with you on the instruments. They really need to give it the GS dash.
    As far as I can tell you're in road mode suspension-wise which is noticeably softer than dynamic, hence the dive on braking. It doesn't do that in dynamic mode. It's one of the nice features of the bike that you can switch between modes easily on the move. Same goes for the engine modes. Dynamic being noticeably more perky than road or rain - not even sure what the point of rain mode is on the RS TBH.

    Great review. The bike has 125 HP with a fuel range of approximately 280 miles, weighs 520 pounds wet, and cost 18K out the door. Thanks!

    Mode 0 on display. Mode 1 is sport with a bit tacho Mode 2 is touring with a speedo. The BC-Pro allows scrolling to see other details. Oddly the RS seems more prone to wind flow issues than the R..

    Like every other Beemer I’ve owned or ridden, you make it sound like it is: quirky. Sure, it has “character” and it’s classy, but it’s an acquired taste that often lingers a tad too long after the meal is over . . .

  • @mrvwbug4423
    @mrvwbug4423 Před 6 lety +2

    So riding position should be fairly comparable to the FJR if I'm not mistaken. This is marketed as a more traditional sport tourer, it definitely isn't a full on sport bike. I know even the FJR has a mild forward lean but is far less leaned forward than a super sport.

    • @TwoWheelObsession
      @TwoWheelObsession  Před 6 lety +2

      No I would not compare the two, this is far more of a sporty position. Easily twice the lean and far more leg bend than an fjr. Completely different arm angles.

    Good review. However, why did he have to downshift to pass? I have a 14 year old R1150R and I never have downshifted to pass. Surely a 2018 boxer twin would have enough roll on power to pass in whatever gear he was in.

    • @TwoWheelObsession
      @TwoWheelObsession  Před 6 lety +1

      Well that’s one way to over analyze lol. Because I wanted to :)

    • @qdllc
      @qdllc Před 6 lety +1

      I've done so just because I have more torque to accelerate. Yeah, I can pass in 6th gear, but if I need to bump up speed quickly, the torque difference matters.

  • @NOMADXVENTURES
    @NOMADXVENTURES Před 6 lety +4

    RS's arent made for fat guys/big fellows-should probably stick w/RT's. 10k on mine and Iove it. Yes the speedo could be better but i use engine noise for tach and look at speed. It's the most well balanced, torque monster out of all my bikes. Winner! It's an incredible machine! You can canyon ride it without hands, its that balanced.

    • @CCitis
      @CCitis Před 2 lety

      You are way off. I am 6'5 270lbs. I can't fit an RT... my legs are too cramped. The RS fits perfect.

  • @GIGABACHI
    @GIGABACHI Před 5 lety +2

    They got the instruments layout BACKWARDS, you want an Analog Tach and Digital Speedo . . . easier to read both AT A GLANCE.
    For the kind of money they are asking I expect an LG 10" OLED display. Cheap Bastards.

  • @andrewd7586
    @andrewd7586 Před 5 lety

    Seriously how many guys look at the tacho? On the RARE occasion I do but mostly it’s by feel/noise. Yeah of course sometimes I wanna just go nuts!😈🤪😙🤭 I’ve been riding Boxer’s for almost 20 years & have had several inline fours, parallel twins, but the Boxer just floats my boat every time😎

    • @qdllc
      @qdllc Před 6 lety +1

      I had similar thoughts when test riding an early year version of the R and RS models. The problem is that you're at the mercy of the designers, and you get what they come up with. IMHO, few bikes nail the ideal instrument layout design. I'm nearsighted and need glasses to ride/drive, so my current Honda instrument cluster is nearly unreadable for details without me bending over and looking over/under my lenses. I've just been using my Garmin since it will display data in larger numbers.

    • @tbro21
      @tbro21 Před 6 lety +1

      I glance at my dash maybe once a ride... how are you guys spending enough time staring at your dash that you care? I check for warning lights and occasionally look at the odometer but probably wouldn't even notice during a ride if my dash suddenly vanished.
