  • In these powerful scenes from 1989, Iris confesses to Mac that she was "The Chief," and Mac goes through a wide range of emotions in reaction to the news. BRILLIANT performances by Carmen Duncan and the late Douglass Watson. Due to time constraints, I could not post the entire episode-ending montage, so I only posted the Mac and Iris part. This was Douglass Watson's final freeze frame, and it couldn't have been more powerful.

CD really reinvented the character of Iris. She did such magnificent work on AW. She really deserved an Emmy.

When Beverle Mckinsey left Texas in 1981, AW tried to lure her back. For years I heard they tried to get her to return. In 1988 when Harding "Pete" Lemay who created Mac and Iris returned briefly as AW headwriter he brought Iris back. As far as I am concerned Carmen Duncan rocked every scene she was in. She should have won an Emmy for this scene alone.

I agree. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the Mac/BM's Iris relationship. As an adult, I totally bought it when Carmen Duncan returned as Iris (even with the accent). It's a testament to the great acting of Douglass Watson (and both BM & CD as Iris)and the wonderful AW writers that we STILL love these scenes after all these years.

Can you believe she never got an Emmy nomination?! She did receive an 'Oustanding Female Newcomer' nomination from the Soap Opera Digest awards but never won. And don't feel guilty about this being your 4th time, I've watched this 40 times...Carmen was FABULOUS. Interestingly, she now lives in Australia and is the head of fundraising for one of Sydney's best hospitals.

Damn! Carmen Duncan screaming at 7:20 is some excellent acting. What an underrated actress, she should have won a slew of Emmys for her work on AW because she was on 'full blast' 365 days a year.

Another classic moment featuring Douglass Watson is found in episode 4163 of the Another World episodes free of charge on the AOL site. It's the one when Rachel confesses in the courtroom that Mitch is the father of her unborn baby. Watson's acting is incredible.

I remember watching this in 1989 and wondering "how is Mac going to get over this?" Then I learned of Douglass Watson's death and realized that these would be the last scenes between Iris & Mac. I don't think Iris ever completely recovered knowing that she would never have "Daddy's" forgiveness.

I never thought that BM could be replaced, but I agree, CD was great as Iris. I always wondered if CD studied BM's old tapes because both CD protrayed Iris so similarly to BM...the hissy fits, crying, schemes, seducing...so similar by both actresses!

The last Mac/Iris scenes of "Another World"...sad, but very powerful. Iris is one of the most complex, fascinating characters in Bay City.

That was awesome! I had never seen the intire scene before. Soaps doesn't even do scenes like this anymore (and all the networks want to know why ratings are down). Give us more great actors, great story like these and the viewers will come back (I know I will).

Ok. I had to come back and watch this again. This is my 4th time. "I NEEDED YOU TO KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU!!!!" Carmen should have been nominated for an Emmy for this scene. Does anyone know if she was?

Donna Swajeski was a very underrated HW. Her work on AW was great. I wasn't too fond of GL when she was co-HW with David Kreizman and didn't watch much of it then. However, I blame Kreizman for that, because, Kreizman was more of a plot-driven writer, while; Swajeski's era of AW was very character-driven.

I do have the scene in the park when Rachel and Mac are discussing Iris and what she did, and Mac fears that Iris might have killed Jason Frame, or at least that she was capable of having killed Jason after setting up Mac. Mac's will never came up in that scene. I can post that scene, which is one of the few I have of Mac and Rachel alone together, in a few days, if you'd like.

I vividly remember the murder of Kirk Laverty in his hotel suite, and Jeff Stone holding Iris and Vivien hostage after they found out he killed Kirk. I was 7 years old back in 79. I still remember that time vividly. I hated it when Jeff was killed off by Larry the rookie cop...up until he was revealed as the killer, I remember liking him a lot.

In 1979, Iris (Beverlee McKinsey)allowed Kirk Laverty to talk her into voting against Mac in a takeover attempt of Cory Publishing, but Mac ended up winning. Anyone remember that storyline?

I would have loved to see this scene with Beverlee McKinsee instead of this Iris. Her and Doug Watson had such a great father daughter chemistry. Those scenes were phenomenal..

Was this DW's last scene on Another World before he passed?....I saw the clip where no one could find him the next day...in your vid description, you said it was DW's last freeze frame...so didn't know if that meant scene as well
