    ✿ Veganlovlie Recipes / Banana Pie - Mauritian Style (Tarte à la banane) :
    This is a very popular pastry that we usually have with a cup of tea in the afternoon in Mauritius. The recipe is easy to veganise if you just use vegan margarine instead of butter in the shortcrust pastry.

    looks delicios there is a recipe that is made from platain bananas you mash mix the plantains with sugar,nutmeg,allspice,cardamon,cinnamon ,and ground clove.Then you mash sweet potato wit the same :brown sugar .allspice,nutmeg,cardamon ,cinnamon ground cloves and condensed or sweet milk..On a pie dish you put the first bottom layer of your mash platain mix making sure you cover it all with a fork .Once covered put in the sweet potatoe filling and then cover it with a layer of the plantain bake

    Perhaps another variation would be to use full fat coconut milk instead of water and a touch of pure vanilla. I love coconut so a bit of shredded coconut drizzled on top of the pie before adding the lattice would be tasty. Mmmm...

    I haven't ever heard of this pie. Thanks so much for sharing your recipes. I really appreciate it very much. My husband & I need vegan recipes, because we gave up meats, & all dairy products. It's going to be a little harder with dairy, but I gave it up for 3 weeks in. Thanks again. Blessings to you & your family..

    Yes they are dry beans. Any dry beans will do, even lentils or dry rice. It is to prevent the dough from rising from inside due to trapped bubbles of air.

  • @Veganlovlie
    @Veganlovlie  Před 12 lety

    Yes you might try pricking it as well. I found using the beans as weight helps the dough retain its shape better...

  • @ivak1000
    @ivak1000 Před 9 lety +1

    To achieve a soft crust, its important NOT to add any water to the dough, just rub in/ knead the butter/margarine and flour to get the required consistency. The banana should also be cooked a bit more until it starts leaving the sides of the pan. Nice vid though, keep it up. :)

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie  Před 9 lety

      +Ivak M It depends on what type of crust you want. Adding cold water (ice cold is better) creates a flaky crust. No water will result in a biscuit type of crust or like you said a soft crust. And then there are oil-based crusts which uses oil and flour to make a denser texture. The recipe is for a flaky crust which requires cold water. As for the banana, I like it moist, that's why I also add water at the end completely when the cooking is done.

    guess another way to prevent the dough from rising is to prick it with a fork all over before putting it in the oven! but anyway thanks for the tip :)

    Where do you get the vegan margarine and which brand do you recommend? Thanks 😊

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie  Před 8 lety +1

      +sarah Devis I am based in Canada and here I use the Becel brand which has a vegan margarine in their range. It depends where you live. But if you can't find vegan margarine, you can make the crust with oil instead. I recently posted a video for an oil-based crust that is light and flaky. I now make all my crusts (sweet and savoury) using this recipe. It's easier to make too. Many people have tried and liked it. Here's the video: czcams.com/video/0eMkzB27Yd8/video.html

    I tried this yesterday. And it was greaat! my family loves it!
    But next time maybe I'll add some sugar to the crust dough :P.

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie  Před 9 lety

      Sugar to the crust dough, I guess it depends how sweet you like it. I find keeping the dough slightly on the savoury side actually accentuates the sweetness of the bananas. But yes, that depends on taste too. Glad to hear you liked it! :)

    Is margarine considered vegan?

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie  Před 8 lety

      +beajae4859 It depends on the brand. You will have to check the list of ingredients or contact them to know whether there are any non-vegan ingredients in it if it is not labelled as vegan.

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie  Před 8 lety

      +beajae4859 Else if you are having trouble finding vegan margarine, you can use this crust recipe instead. It uses oil instead of margarine and it's easier to make too. czcams.com/video/0eMkzB27Yd8/video.html

    I tried today.. The crust was good but banana was still.watery.. Why so?

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie  Před 8 lety

      +emotixca boii - I'm glad to hear that the crust turned out great. As for the banana, you probably didn't cook it enough for the liquid to evaporate before using it in the crust. The banana paste should normally be thick enough before you add a little water to keep it moist when baked. But you might have added a little too much water, so try reducing it next time. I hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out.
