  • Alumnus Tony Wheeler (BSc Engineering Science, 1969), philanthropist and co-founder (along with his wife Maureen) of the Lonely Planet has funded and launched a new series of PhD scholarships in the history of travel writing at the University of Warwick.
We caught up with Tony to talk about his life, his time at Warwick and the importance of supporting students and giving back to his alma mater. In this interview Tony talks about his memories of University and his subsequent global adventures. Plus he explains why being part of the Warwick community is still so important.
Through their fully funded scholarships, Tony and Maureen are making it possible for four PhD students to study on The Wheeler History of Travel Writing Programme and allow even more undergraduate students to take part in field trips, participate in conferences, and access valuable internships.
The programme will be based in Warwick’s Global History and Culture Centre (GHCC).
Tony gained his undergraduate degree in engineering at the University of Warwick before embarking on travels across Europe, Asia and Australasia. It was this journey with Maureen that led to the creation of his first travel guide and the creation of Lonely Planet in 1973.
