- New York Doll (2005)
New York Doll is a documentary based on the life of former New York Dolls member Arthur Kane. It was nominated for both a Satellite Award and a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered in 2005.
A recovering alcoholic and recently converted Mormon, Arthur "Killer" Kane, of the rock band The New York Dolls, is given a chance at reuniting with his band after 30 years.
The film features an interview with Morrissey, who is a life long New York Dolls devotee, and who arranged the reunion. - Hudba
The way he described the Dolls is exactly how many people view the Smiths. To be around such a short time, to accomplish so much, and to have people actually take time to listen to them and understand where they’re coming from. It’s a beautiful thing to have true fans over mainstream success. Not that mainstream success is necessarily a bad thing, but having the smaller clique of people who truly appreciates and understands you is something prodigious.
Yes, of course, because fans are fans, ultimately all of us fans are the alike, its just the object of fandom that differs
You make a great point. Mainstream success is a numbers game, but “underground success” with TRUE fans is love and passion and something special and precious.
Yep. I agree wholeheartedly.
Morrissey is such a class act.
He is a beautiful and eloquent man.
I've never been a "fan" of Morrissey but after hearing the nice things he said about the Dolls, he has definitely grown larger in my eyes!
He wrote a book about them before he formed The Smiths with Marr.
I like this. Lots of Moz interviews, he seems like he doesn't want to talk, or he's being difficult. Here, he is just straightforward, and serious. Good to see it.
evilashxero I agree, he's very open here.
Yeah. It's refreshing. I wonder if there are more out there like it?
*****
I dunno about that one. lol He seems pretty antagonistic sometimes. Also, at times he won't be serious at all. It just matters who the interviewer is. Here, he is talking about someone he admires, and is being quite straight forward.
Humble? Never difficult? We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Moz thrives on being difficult in my view. I think he'd be insulted by anyone who would consider him easy-going.
Not being asked about himself 🙂
I adore his accent, his enthusiasm on the dolls, he is my hero, can't wait to see him later. Thanks for coming to Winnipeg.
sadly, New York Dolls was the most underrated band in the history of rock music
OMG, someone else knows about Turbonegro! I am really shocked.
NYD were trailblazers victims of society prejudice.
Fidel -sadly that is very true, such a great band!
New York Dolls had so much talent . Sucks they split up after what .2/3 years?
DaltonCulture I disagree. Such terrible songs. Most overrated band ever. Influential as far as attitude but they’re a lot like Black Flag. Influential but they actually suck.
Lovely to used Moz speaking about a topic that is not himself. He's so much more relaxed and at ease. He is the REAL DEAL!
@Dave Wray no shit
This is the greatest songwriter of his generation. I don't care if you don't agree.
He has the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen so bright and full of life 🤗
Just a stunning man. Eyes, lips, voice, accent, intellect....all of it.
Growing up in NW Detroit in 70's, The New York Dolls were gods and loved. Dolls play many shows around the metro area - and we loved 'em. I saw the new version at Cobo Hall, warming up J. Giels Band in June 1976 - and they rocked.
The New York Dolls were a fucking brillant band!
Great interview. Wonderful to hear Morrissey talk so honestly and with such passion about something so dear to him.
New York Doll was the most riveting rock documentary I ever saw.
I love you Moz!!!! ❤
"Every New York Dolls song could be a hit single."
The New York dolls were a great band, one of my favourite bands of all time.
Jet boy stole my baaaaaaaby
@@antonydawson6932 FLYING AROUND NEW YORK CITY SO HIGH!!!!!!!........
I used to ride bus no 4 on Santa Monica Blvd with a nice blonde haired guy named Arthur. We sat in the back. He always got off at the Mormon Temple. I had NO IDEA who he was. Thanks Morrissey for the documentary.
Morrissey looking very well.
The best thing now is to find a great NYD cover band...
really Listen to Morrissey and you hear the passion he has about this band; they deserve it
i learned more here than on the damn NY Dolls Wikipedia page. thanks Mozz
I saw the Dolls over several nights when they made their '73 LA debut at the Whisky. Arthur was bandaged up and miserable but played a bit here and there as I recall. Opening band Mayson from W. Virginia, with their mellotron-tinged prog/glam hybrid and androgynous look also provided a powerful part of the show; they eventually changed their name to White Noise Pink Noise and signed w/Bearsville but were shelved. Even at this early point on the timeline The Dolls were the proverbial 'hot mess'. Watching it all at ground zero at point blank range remains a vivid and palpable memory.
Ooh I love Moz and the Dolls. The movie was excellent. I cried like a little baby. RIP Billy, Johnny,Jerry, and Arthur.
And now RIP Sylvain Mizrahi.
Best music interview I've ever seen, end of
This is by far the most useful and credible source of knowledge and true recognition of the New York Dolls and what they accomplished as artists.
Very insightful , another band that was very influential but made very little money . When you are ahead of your time you open the doors for the people who follow . Velvet Underground comes to mind as another influential band .
The masses are simply 'behind the times' ie: Galileo was ostracised for telling the truth

@@scotthanback4530lol no 😂
Say what you want about Morrissey, the mans' a genius!!
It took a lot of deaths to understand a lot of art.
David Kruse profound.
Moz is looks gorgeous in this video!
Excellent! Ohhh, he looks super handsome! Also, Morrissey really has insight into the dolls. They were a special band.
The New York Dolls Were One Of The Greatest Bands Ever!!!!!!! I Love The New York Dolls, the first 2 albums are classics, Johnny Thunders Is One Of The Best Punk Rock Guitarists ever. The Dolls Were The Best.
Morrissey is such a clever dude! 😃👌
"Those dreadful hairs bands of the 80s"...good 1 Morrissey.
Crüe were pretty original although I understand his distaste for most of the bands
I reckon when Morrissey retires from doing music, he should do documentaries. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
long live the New York Dolls !!!!!
"we still listen to pop music from 7 million years ago"
think i like morrissey more talking than singing.actually like him a bunch.how soon is now is one of pops best.
Moz from heart to art. And his, their trials. We the people will always look after you .
Say what you will about Morrissey, he really did right by Arthur and the Dolls. Rip Syl, Killer, Jerry, Johnny and Billy!!!
Bless you Mr. Morrissey. The Dolls were the best band in the world.
Moz is so great. I love his devotion to the Dolls.
This charming man
It is great to see the master curmudgeon be so effusive, and so lucid about something he really, really loves.
The dolls kicked the door open...and everyone else rushed through...
Beatles did first, then the Dolls followed suit in the 70s.
@@Smooth0vibrations The Beatles? You can't be serious? The dullest band ever to grace the planet. And irrespective of Morrisey as Fan Club prez of the New York dolls, the Smiths were boring too...Any pioneering seminal music came out of the U.S.A. It's not a moot point. End.
@@KeyboredCoward Kinks? Who? Stones? Abbey Road? Black Sabbath? huh buddy?
@@outis439-A Sure all boring bands, buddy!
@@KeyboredCoward Then what bands do you like?
Enlightened interview! Arthur RIP, David & Sylvain remain. NYD
the original bad boys of R&R.
Eyebrow game during conversation is key.
Of course it is, that's one of the things we like about him.
I think he’s really fighting back the tears here early in the interview. They were a huge influence on his teenage years, to the point of obsession.
He's just so hot 💐💋
Yes Morrissey Yes, NYD were and still are a great band, love them, love The Smiths. That's all that needs to be said.
It's funny I graduated in 86' so I was right there in the Smiths/Morrissey era and though more a Zep rocker I did get into Morrisey, who seemed so cold and cockey and callous but at least now he seems to have a heart of gold. I saw him around 1991 and he played a blink and you missed it concert, which I also though wow the balls of this guy. It was seriously maybe an hour at best.
Morrissey is mostly on the mark in describing the NY Dolls. I dislike and disagree with the cliche, " they were ahead of their time." A error. They were right on time for those of us aching for a band to shatter the MOR morass that
was so prevalent at that time. It just took everyone else 30 years to catch up. The Dolls simply couldn't sell enough units for a major label to justify keeping them on contract. I loved them because they were the real thing. He's right--" those were very dark days."
Yep, simple as that really. Very good comment
MOR or MOP morass is back.
For those that don't know, when JT & JN left the band the Dolls had live commitments that needed to be filled. Enter a New Yorker by the name of Blackie 'Goozmen' (spelling?). After he & Arthur went to L.A. & formed Killer Kane. That ended & Blackie formed the band 'Sister' which became 'Circus Circus'. After that, he changed his name to Blackie 'Lawless' & formed 'We Are Sexual Perverts' better known by the nomenclature as W.A.S.P.!!
Saw the Dolls at Hyde Park in a tent then straight after saw Moz on the main stage. Great night.
all thx to morrissey for the dolls reunion that became so bittersweet.
The documentary that this interview is taken from is done really well. It doesn't get bogged down with interviews from people nobody cares about. Arthur was the ONLY guy who couldn't turn his time with the Dolls into a life long career... but he had the guts to share that & risk being a joke where as most would never dare to. I hope he's finally found peace.
Good interview for the documentary. It's nice seeing his full interview.
When Morissey tells you something is "taboo" it's really taboo.
Iyz card no empathy. Humanity. And fear of true and Who one is..
Agreed. I saw them in 1973 at university. Long live R&R
The music! If only people would just listen to the music.
New York dolls were one of my favorite bands! And i have spoken to Johnny in early 1986 R. I.P
The Dolls were amazing. Johny Thunders stands as one of the greats.
And Trash, the Morrissey cover is a, and always be a Classic.. Shame he doesn't do it Post 'Introducing Morrissey' 90s days.
Agreed. I saw it on the Kill Uncle Tour..30 short years ago..
Human Being is amazing too.
Great picture
RIP Johnny thunders Arthur Cain Jerry Nolan :(
sickquads4me And Billy Murcia The Original drummer who sadly died, he was Then Replaced by Jerry Nolan.
Eu fico meio paralisada com esse jeito dele de falar. Como é possível tanta elegância? E a voz?? Uau!
very interesting. long Live THE NEW YORK DOLLS
totally agree with Morrissey 100%
This person inspired me so much. It happened a long time ago.
"All those DREADFUL American hair bands in the 80s." Hahahahah! You got that right, Morrissey.
Fantastic interview... and, I want this hairstyle.
"Trash" is mentioned and I go into a daze, as that is one of My favorite songs that I AM always singing with My Love
Trash is my fave Dolls track too.
P.L. H. Mine is chatterbox
Puss in Boots
Remember kids: Morrissey was so adamant about reuniting The New York Dolls when no one wanted them to
but everyone else is more adamant about The Smithe reuniting when Morrissey doesn't really want to ;)
god their all dead bar the singer. To see this band together back in the day is magical.
I think he means in a larger mainstream sense. I'm the only one of my friends who knows who the Dolls are. You don't see them on TV or in commercials. Certainly not on the radio.
The dolls were fun AND EXCITING ❤
Amazing ;)
I like Morrissey hes down to earth
Not where veganism is involved.
I would place Badfinger and The Ramones in the same class as hard luck bands as The Dolls...........
JoshDone Yea...
and the Replacements
Definitely Badfinger!
i wouldnt compare it to the ramones at all. they died off after it was over.
@@carolleslie517 Badfingers weren`t just unlucky, they made pretty well but its members were pretty depressive persons.
The west ham United of the rock world no punk without them xxx legends x
New York Dolls forever! !m!
Streets ahead of everyone at the time!
I went to a Billy Bragg concert and he made my blood...BOIL.
Imagine being diagnosed with cancer, and then dying within 2 hours after hearing the news.
That has got to be the most insane case I've ever heard of.
The Genuine Live Shows In Morrissey Is Evident By His Mouth&Eye Movement’s
Moz has said some iffy things over the years, but absolutely right this time
coool
The universe looked at Arthur and said, "Ok bud -- life's been a disappointment to you, but I'm afraid it's time for me to take you. Oh, what the hell... I'll give you one last taste of the life you once had -- make it count."
im off to get the music of the new york dolls
I'm the New York Dolls of CZcams, hardly anyone looks at my channel, especially not my discussions, I get far more views on my shorts that I make of scenes from everyday life than I do of my discussions. I have had extremely few comments on any of my video clips.
his mannerisms are still the same
I saw the Dolls in 73...Kiss was the back up band
also a pale imitation
2:45 I forget who said it-(I think I read it on a johnny thunders cd liner note)-" The Dolls opened the door, held it open, AND EVERY OTHER BAND RAN THROUGH IT!"
The New York dolls remind me of another band ahead of their time; The Pixies
Morrissey totally nails it when he explains about those dreadful 80s hair bands that sold like 20 millions copies of every album. It must have been so frustrating for the Dolls watching those fake third rate derivatives cashing on what they were doing ten years before, only without the art, originality and realness.
Amen: "All the Right people have" heard of them. Much like Gram Parsons or the Velvet Underground, to a lesser extent.
7:37 Dank
I was also wondering why the New York dolls have never been really successful. I guess that one reason was, that John peel didn´t like them - and he was the most influential person for the success of Punk and New Wave - at least in Europe.
NEW RESPECT FOR MORRISSEY , DIDN'T NO ; )
I wish the best for these rockers.... who are they ?
