- This is the first item I started when I was released from my splint after surgery. What an amazing knife. I wanted to make sure and give it the sheath it deserved.

ONE LITTLE STRAW
When times are the worst and your feelings are raw.
You reach out and grasp that one little straw.
The one important thing that makes you go on with your life.
To keep you from ending it and getting away from the strife.
When your worlds upside down and your heart turned to stone.
And you sit in the dark feeling so all alone.
You hold onto the thing that makes it all seem worth while.

You treasure your straw, the most important thing in the world.
It helps you to cope when your life’s knotted and curled.
People can laugh at my straw, poke fun, and sneer.
But my little straw is the only reason that I’m still here.
I’ve kept it close, very precious to me.
And kept it hidden for no one to see.
But I’m telling it now and you should be told.
I have a straw that I love, and treasure, and hold.
People don’t think about straws or that they have merits.
But in my little world, mine has 24 carats.

Hello, I'm a newer subscriber and enjoy yer channel. I'd like to share I've had a similar accident. Years ago, while crafting a custom longbow, I came close to completely cutting off my left forefinger at the second joint of my dominant hand. I say dominant but do things with both hands, but since I write left handed I consider myself left handed. Anyway, I have been around saws and tools most of my life. Been crafting things since I was around 8 yrs old when my dad knew/realized I could be trusted with a jigsaw. The injury went through all the tendons and most of the bone. I am blessed to even still have the finger. Through the years I have been able to do most of the things I once could, but I do not have the range of motion in the finger and joint I once did. it can be visibly seen in comparison to my right finger. I'd like to add that one does goes through dark times, especially those of us who craft and make things. I dabble in leather and like yourself also blacksmithing/knife making. I no longer build long bows, though I may start again one day. It isn't out of fear, but rather out of proper equipment for protecting the lungs against the fiberglass and exotic wood dusts which can be so harmful. My real skills are in that of house construction which my dad had taught me. I still do that on occasion but I have been in the Healthcare industry now for the last 21 years as a Nurse. My dad was pretty smart and saw that the building industry was going to slow way down at least around here, and it did. Having dependable employees were becoming harder to find as well. It was through me finally listening to my dad that I went ahead and got the education in Nursing like he had encouraged me to do. I excell in wounds because it's something I can work on and see it get better. In other words, I help to rebuild or repair a part of someone and I can get some gratification in actually working with my hands, and while it's flesh instead of wood, steel, or leather, it gives me a bit of gratification because not only am I helping repair someone's body and or life, I am still able to work with my hands and get back some of the lost in the things that I yearn for. Once something like crafting something out of nothing is in yer blood, it remains there. I'm not sure why I went into detail of my experience with you, but just felt I needed to. I hope in some way it helps you along your path of recovery as you continue to follow your heart in what you also yearn for, to make something and find that it's beautiful, useful, and purposeful. Thank you for sharing your videos and being an inspiration. You're a good person and always remember, things happen for a reason. Sometimes it's simply a lesson to be learned, a chance for inner or spiritual growth, or something else, but if we let it (the circumstance), it can and will produce a growth we'd not be able to have otherwise.

About the craftsmen you are right on point. I am a woodworker and if I don't get into my shop I feel lost. I have Primary Progressive MS and am forced by the disease to stay out of the shop. Because of the disease I am forced to stay out of the bush. I am in a wheelchair and feel alive when i get into the shop or the woods. You have done a great job on that sheath. I am glad that you are recovering well. Always look at the positive... always. Cheers... Wheels out.

I'm jealous lol. a beautiful tool, and an awesome system that was made to sheath it. I'm absolutely impressed. something I'll never have lol. I honestly can't afford that kind of craftsmanship, and have no means to do it myself. but I can admire these things none the less. it's items of this nature that make the world a beautiful place. reminds us that we will always be better than a machine. reminds us what we can do with bare hands. keep that thing safe always brother.

Man... what timing for me on this video. I'm only at the 4:00 minute mark but have to share. My wife Bridget fell and severely shattered her wrist requiring plates and screws about two months ago. Since then she hasn't had the best of luck. She was diagnosed with a chronic pain syndrome caused by the nerve stint or something else, we don't know. Constant pain even with narcotics. Then yesterday a huge blister formed on her hand that had the surgery. We have no idea why. We are going back in to see the surgeon today. This Severely Sucks! I've been watching her suffer so much I wish it was me and not her. Glad to see you back.

and on the injured pinky thing, I totally get it. pulled a tendon in my elbow recently, and on one side being no stranger to pain or serious injuries, had more than my share, it was, well, let's get this taken care of and back to business as usual. on the other side, I felt very vulnerable, at the time I had for lack of better terms lost the use of that arm. so simple tasks became a challenge, wife had to help me on every day tasks, and it did freak me out in a way. I'm a big camper, hiker and in nature more than not, and the injure had no appearent cause, so honestly I kinda wondered if it was permanent. that freaked me out the most. I knew if it was, my freedom was toast.I'd become nothing more than a tiger locked in a zoo. and it really got to me. seems silly now looking back, and to many it will be. but I realised at that moment how much my freedom to roam the woods meant to me, and had no desire to see that disapere. so I get the dark days.

Insightful, we all need to dabble in our own darkness and find, as you said what we like or dislike. Too bad it can take life changing events before we own up. Thanx 4 sharing keep on, nobody cares until they get hurt and realize they can't suck it up and walk it off, or what ever it is they can no longer do. I am disabled and wow you sure find out who cares about you very quickly.

glad to see ya doing better and your right about the darkness cause that's all I've seen for the last 3 1/2 months if it wasn't for you tube and guys like you Larry Travis and few other I would have been stuck on this couch seeing black.I was able to have hope of getting back out in the woods.I may not be able to walk for more than 10-15 monitors before the pain over welms me but there's always some one worse off than me and I wish them the best and God bless .I hope things get better for you and those that say neg things about you and your leather works their just jealous they can't produce the art you can. Dang man, I didn't know you hurt yourself so bad! Just figured you didn't have time for shooting/editing videos. Glad you're getting back to work. I'm a Sous Chef in a hotel, and work with my hands everyday, mostly with a large knife. I also dabble in knife making and leather work. I often fear what life would be like if I had some accident and lost a hand or an important finger. I don't know what else I could do for a living that wouldn't require the use of your hands. Glad you're ok.

Great work. I love how even your dye is. Do you dip dye to make it so even? I can't seem to replicate that kind of finish wit wool daubs.
+Mikethecat308 No sir, I don't dip dye. My dye job has been 6 years in the making. haha.... Lots of things to learn before you really start getting an even finish. It's mostly about reading the leather and making sure you have the right amount of moisture in the leather.

I love big knives... I use big knives... I LOVE big knives. I to do leather work... well used to. I did sword & knife scabbards for renaissance re-enactors, plus some other things. I had made a sheath for myself for a big Bowie I had. I had it on the table to show my skills, limited tho they were. It had fringe, which was popular at the time. & I cut the fringe myself. Anyway, I let someone buy it...without the knife. I still have the knife...but I lost something in that. It wasn't supposed to be sold. I think I lost a little piece of my soul. Sold for a few bucks. Ya think if I make a new sheath, I could get it back
Oh for sure man. Go into it with no expectations and take your time while doing it. I can almost assure you it will provide that spark again.

I never said "I wound't share my knowledge." I have several tutorials and continue to put out videos all the time that give tips and advise. :)
Inspiring! Gotta live life on your terms damn the trolls! It's all in how we think about ourselves and our mission here, while we are on this Earth. I think you got it. Maybe you can join me in my own campaign to try and get people focused on moving forward. It's a little thing really, but when it's time to leave someone, or hang up the phone, no longer say "Take care" say "Take risks!" or something along those lines. Believe me, that one little thing will force people to stop and say "huh?" "Why did you say that?" What a great segue into talking about life, potential, dreams of our youth, and how way too many of us have left that all behind for the ordinary GRIND of daily living.
