Good video. Something l learned the hard way is that hot water is good, boiling water is bad. Spent several hours making a scout carry sheath and figured if hot water worked to stiffen it some, boiling water would do even better. It stiffened it to the point where the straps would not even flex. Ruined what would have been a great sheath. Damn sure wont make that same mistake again!

I am newer at this stuff as you know so last fall, I needed to try and learn some of this exact stuff to TRY and wetform at least one of my sheaths for one of my Condors....... I was so scared lol. Researched a LOT, finally did some of this kinda stuff, it worked out OK. -- I buggered up the leather a bit on the outside, but not badly considering everything at being new, my first time at it. I actually used coconut oil. The sheath was soaked in hot water on my stove for quite awhile I checked it a lot. It was too stiff and thick to form w my hands, those sheaths are beasts as you know. so I wrapped it w a thin towels and clipped huge binder clips all the way around to do what you would do pushing w your fingers. And 2 L. zip ties lol. I told Larry he needs to start eatin the Coconut Oil, so many benefits to it - you should remind him, he listen to ya lol. TY for the upload, it is very practical and helpful!! I hope your hand is doing well. Try not to overdo it.
Justin,Great vid. You just educated me. I would have fallen into the category of an "over-oiler." I'll cut it down to a light coat twice a year, unless I go swimming with the sheath! LOL

well, justin i have an old .357MAG holster i have been carrying for years and it's been dry. i got out some coconut oil (didn't have any bee's wax) and treated the holster lightly. then i sprayed it with Pledge furniture polish and wiped it down. looks like that worked ok even though it's not exactly what you prescribed. good good old holster that i never have treated and i've had it a couple of decades. i looked at mink oil at WM........ dang, they wanted almost $10 for a little kiwi brand tin of that mink oil (too much). thank you, martina

I've found that it's a busy as I want it to be. These days I care more about living a nice life vs chasing the $ though. I enjoy it for sure. You know as well as me the challenges though. Thank you Chuck. What item do you make?
great video, and I made the conditioner and successfully wet molded my leather sheath on the back of it, well, I say successfully... any suggestions on how to rescue a well baked sheath? (oven possibly set too high and the sheath is now bubbly) all part of the learning curve!
leather will wear out over time IF IT AINT CARED FOR PROPERLY! thats the point people mis state this looks as it has been properly cared for and treated it hasn't been allowed to get soft from water and has been treated to keep it from deterioration with this sort of care a sheath like this should last for 100 years or more

I've read that coconut oil will become rancid and smell bad after a while. Justin, do you think this is BS? I'm sure it doesn't matter for treating leather or protecting your knife handle and blade, but it may deter me from using it for lip balm.
I use coconut oil for a lot of my herbal remedies and mostly it will just get kind of a stale nut odor, if it gets any odor at all. Animal fats tend to get rancid more than nut oils, IMO.
Beeswax and coconut oil sounds like a good alternative to concerns I read about attracting predators or scarring away game when using bear grease or other animal fats on leather boots etc. What about storage concerns especially long term?

It's actually surprisingly simple. What I had the most trouble with in the very beginning was cutting my leather because I skimped out on the cutting tool, so my rounded forms would be pretty ugly. But stitching, dyeing and finishing is fairly breezy when you know how.
Oh for sure man. This stuff is great for all leather. Just remember it won't soak in as well on the fleash side of the kodiak. Doesn't bother me because I like everything nice and conditioned but some won't like it.
