  • This video gives you a perfect overview of what help side defense in basketball is. I show you my 4 best drills to teach help side defense to your team. In contrast to shell drills, these drills are much more game-like, more fun and motivating, with action and finishing.
Don't waste too much of your players' time standing and explaining. They learn best in practice. No matter what age or level your basketball team has, these drills are easy to understand and will skyrocket your players' team defense skills.

Awesome Work! I am coaching a middle school 7th grade team. We did read and react last year but the basic drills were not enough to automate. I look forward to trying your Motion O drills as well as these excellent Help D drills. Especially the motion offense drills because you have them more starting (or perhaps could be used from) an offensive transition perspective. That is the biggest hurdle I have had - the boys want to run but it has been a gap from transition to Read and React Motion. Looking forward to any videos/content you may have on Transition. Thank you for the Content!

Transition is another great topic. I'll tackle it in the near future. Thank you for your comment!

Is this considered shifting to a zone? No zone allowed in my league so I'm not sure if we can do this type of defense.

Good question! To be on the safe side, players should not move to the rim line, only to the edge of the paint. Usually it's ok in most cases but some referees are stricter than others. It is a good idea to talk to the refs and adjust.
