  • Demonstration of the distinctive electronic 'chirrup' (or 'warble') incoming call alert of this two-tone green (officially, this was described as "blue") 722-type telephone dating from 1974, and made in Cwmcarn, Wales. A notable feature of the Trimphone is that the chirrup increases in volume with each successive ring, though a control on the side allowed this to be regulated. The name is an acronym standing for Tone Ring Illuminator Model.
Although connected to a VoIP BT Digital Voice telephone line these days, an in-line converter allows the pulse dialling method to be changed to modern tone dialling, allowing the vintage handset to be operated in the digital age. The converter units are available at: www.vintagetel... .

I have a trimphone identical the one in the video. I noticed these around 1978/9 but they had been going long before then. There’s something futuristic about a trim phone. There were 2 manufacturers that produced them, one of them being GEC. The other manufacturer whose name I have forgotten was based in Northern Ireland. Take a look at Doctor Who’s ‘ The Hand of Fear’ (episode 2) and you will see people using Trim Phones in the main nuclear power station control room. They still have a weird futuristic look about them 50 years on.

My Nana had one of these in the late 1970s and early 1980s 👍

Trimphones are awesome. I remember John Simm using one in Life on Mars, a bright red one I think.

I used to like Harry Hill using one in TV Burp, though the ringing sound was wrong, which irked me considerably!

I think any trim phone after 1979 was modified and then re rented out to customers.
