This song is in the album Acabou Chorare, considered by many as the greatest album ever made in brazilian music. If you ever want to react again to full albuns, this is the one to do it. The group separated long ago, but they did a tour recently, in 2016/17, right before the pass of one of its members, the great Moraes Moreira, in 2020.

Novos Baianos, junto com Mutantes, Caetano, Gal, Gil, e Betania (Doces Barbaros), Tom Ze, etc, foram proceres de um estilo musical pos-bossa nova que ficou conhecido como Tropicalia, que eu considero um rock`n roll bastante autentico e legitimamente brasileiro. Muito bom!

just to answer some of your questions - I file this under samba rock. Jorge Ben was one of its main creators, but a lot of people made this kind of music, and it evolved during the 1970s into a slicker form of samba. You should check Antonio Carlos & Jocafi - Kabaluerê for another example from this same period.
Novos Baianos started out as a psych band. The guy shredding on the electric guitar is Pepeu Gomes, he's a bit of a guitar god in Brazil. Moraes Moreira is on the acoustic, and Baby Consuelo is singing. They all had big solo careers after the band split in the late 70s. The story goes that they went on a tour with João Gilberto, of all people, and picked up that more samba/bossa sound from him, putting out Acabou Chorare in 72. That entire album is amazing. This clip and the other one you saw are from a doc filmed when they were holed up in a commune recording their next album, Novos Baianos F.C., but this track is from Acabou Chorare. You really can't go wrong with them, and they all had some good stuff in their solo careers. Moraes Moreira's 1st solo LP is amazing too.

You noticed the influence of Jimi Hendrix, because the guitarist Pepeu Gomes was very influenced by him. The Novos Baianos were a typical hippie band that played rock in the early 70's, until they received an unexpected visit from João Gilberto, father of Bossa Nova, who influenced the band to embrace Brazilian music. The result was the album "Acabou Chorare" from 1972, considered the BEST MPB ALBUM of all time.

Yes, you already knew it in a live, I remember because I didn't know it before I saw in that live.. and I know Novos Baianos, once one of of its singers, Moraes Moreira, did a show just across the street that began just when all the "oficina" was in silence because it was time of dinner, I remember the sound of the strings in the begin of "Preta Pretinha" "preenchendo" the dark silence as one of the big moments of the decades that I worked in that place...

The guitarist of Novos Baianos was Pepeu Gomes, he was married to the vocalist, Baby Consuelo, today she changed her name to Baby do Brasil.
Pepeu, was once considered one of the best guitarists in the world (I still do). There is an instrumental song of his, in a solo career, called Malacaxeta. Worth listening to.

Loro sono venuti a vivere a Rio dalla Bahia negli anni 70 e vivevano tutti insieme in una casa come in una comunità hippie, per quegli anni di ditatura militare era scandaloso anche perché questa ragazza, Baby Consuelo, era l'unica donna ed era anche la fidanzata del guitarrista Pepeu Gomes con chi ha avuto parecchie figli. Love this song. ALL of them are great musicians but the guitar player is called Pepeu Gomes and he is considered one of the best Brazilian guitar player. I loved this performance too. It gave me the chills.

Mas, para mim, engraçado que me lembra o início dos anos 2000, com minha década dos 20 anos, quando juntava a turma pra ouvir tudo isso de novo nos quintais de casa por aí, nas Universidades. Amo.

the new baianos got together again in the 90's to record a cd. quaze became megadeath guitarist in his band but there was no interest on his part but he took kiko loureiro from the band angra.pepeu became interested in the guitar when listening to jimi hendrix songs through the speakers, the vocalist baby from brazil was his wife for years was a teenage crush in the style let's run away together and live with a bunch of musicians in a hippie community

Thanks Frank! I was one who asked some times for your reaction to this song; they are very talented and represented a new age of Brazilian music in the seventies. The guitar player, Pepeu Gomes, is one of the best Brazilians guitar players, and at that time he and the singer, Baby Consuelo, were a couple.
All of them had ( and still have) their solo careers. Years ago they join to present a live concert, was great! Unfortunately, after that, one member of the group died.

Baby do Brasil (formerly Baby Consuelo) and Pepeu Gomes were part of Novos Baianos. They lived in a "hippie" community, free of rules, where music was the basis of survival. This community lasted 10 years and from there came great references of Brazilian popular music. Baby, Pepeu, Moraes Moreira, Paulinho Boca de Cantor among other musicians and composers. Baby and Pepeu lived together 20 years, had 6 children, always stood out for their bold look, ahead of their time. They were barred from Disney because of their colored hair, for drawing too much attention, and they made a song about it. Baby is one of the greatest Brazilian singers and Pepeu is one of the greatest guitarists in Brazil. Recently, they were together on the TV show and presented "A Menina Dança" live.

Your observation about Pepeu's guitar comparing with Jimi Hendrix' sound is precise; Pepeu has studied Hendrix' sound as much as Jacob do Bandolim or Waldir Azevedo, two big references from Brazilian Choro.
That bass player - Dadi Carvalho - would later play on Jorge Ben Jor band.
