  • The Ig Nobel Prizes honor achievements that make people LAUGH, then THINK.
In the Ig Informal Lectures, some days after the ceremony, the new Ig Nobel Prize winners attempt to explain what they did, and why they did it.
The 2022 Ig Nobel Prize for Engineering was awarded to Gen Matsuzaki, Kazuo Ohuchi, Masaru Uehara, Yoshiyuki Ueno, and Goro Imura, for trying to discover the most efficient way for people to use their fingers when turning a knob.

Thank you for this insightful research. I have designed control surfaces for a few tools and equipment panels we use at work, and have tried to take ergonomics into account when it comes to knob size with the task at hand. I didnt realize that the orientation of the knob would make such a significant difference, especially with finger spacing. Now for a question: Have you taken the use of gloves into consideration with knob size and finger count? I had to account for the operator wearing two distinct types of gloves, so one of the knobs I designed was oblong shaped to assist with the proper "feel".

Good work. Thank you for sharing it.

There are many large knobs that i operate with one finger. For that, the knobs need to rotate smoothly and not bind. I think one finger operation is an overlooked topic.

Unfortunately, Ham radio operators would buck this pattern. We use knobs with dimples for one finger operation :)
