  • In this video we dive into the latest virtual instrument from IK Multimedia; the B-3X which is an amazing recreation of the classic tonewheel organs that have influenced generations of musicians. The B-3X is the first "authorized" tonewheel organ as IK Multimedia partnered with the Hammond / Suzuki Organ company gaining unprecedented access to the virtual DNA of these beautiful, timeless instruments.
    There is no way to cover everything in a single video so I invite you to comment below with any questions you might have about the B-3X and as always thanks so much for watching!

    I've been in love with the B3 for years now but not enough to want to buy one. Who knew I'd end up with a VIRTUAL one lol? I LOVE this thing. Using a Hammond XK3 as the contoller. Using the XK3 as the controller had lots of bugs when the first version of B3x was released and I worked with IKMultimedia for over a month to get it to work and that's when they released the second version. SO cool! Much thanks to IKMultimedia for all the work on it and letting me be of assistance in getting the XK3 working FULLY with this software.

    Glad you’re enjoying playing by yourself. A B3 musician, this system sound 4¢ higher than a Hammond tonewheel. On stage you can’t match instruments like a Hammond. But its infinite fun in your basement with hauling a B3 down there

    • @PraiseTracks

      Right off the bat, there is absolutely nothing like the feeling of sitting behind one of these powerful beasts. I have so many memories of playing the real thing. Nothing compares to the physicality of having both manuals, and that crazy full pedalboard under your feet, hearing the tone wheels spinning, and almost getting your hair blown back by the frenetic spinning of the Leslies!
      These virtual emulations allow us to relive a fraction of that experience, and an iPad weighs laughably less than one of those behemoths.
      Thanks so much for watching.

    Fun! Great review! Yep, used this on a recent production, sounded great! My only wish is to be able to adjust the treble and woofer Leslie ramp times individuallly. Maybe in an update. It also uses lots of CPU! But it sounds like a B3 and a Leslie to me, and I love all the customization! Great playing at the end! 👍

      Thanks for watching! I missed covering it (there is so much packed into this instrument) but there is a setting to modify the acceleration/deceleration of the rotor and drum. I was using version 1.01 in the video which optimized some things. I really have been enjoying working with the B-3X as you can tell 😎

    • @obwanz1921
      @obwanz1921 Před 4 lety

      Simeon Amburgey Yes, I know about those controls, but you still can’t control the upper and lower acceleration/deceleration separately.
      On my leslie 122, the lower rotor takes a good 7 seconds to speed up and slow down, while the upper is almost instantaneously ramped to the new speed. Wish I could make this happen.
      Otherwise, it’s pretty spot on!

    Hey Sir 😃 I really enjoyed this video! I just purchased this app for my Mac 💻 and wanted to use it in church but can’t seem to figure out how to use 2 keyboards 😬 do you mind making a tutorial on how to setup your keyboards with this app ?

  • @downpatmusic
    @downpatmusic Před 3 lety +3

    The real controller for this would be bass pedals, and a 2 manual (dual stacked keyboard) because you really need the lower manual too to access the 3 parts. Pedal, Great manual (lower manual) and the Swell (upper manual). You play the mellow accompaniment on the lower manual and the solo lead on the upper manual with the pedals for bass. A Hammond SKX or XK-5 neither cheap, could midi to this plug in and control it. Of course that raises the price substantially but real organists would want this. Studio tracking musicians could track the pedals, lower and upper manuals to get the same effect for recording. But as a performer I'd want an organ controller for this plug in after testing it today. It sounds amazing and the Leslie sim is the best out there.

    You can automate the Wah to midi pedal and switch (latch engage) on a controller. I use (on my controller)
    Wah ON-CC54...Pedal Assignment CC55 and this should translate to work in your DAW. I haven't found a way to assign the Reverb pedal/distortion pedal or Reverb FX volume to midi note yet,

      @PraiseTracks  Před 2 měsíci +1

      It should be ready to go out of the box. I think there are a couple of assignments that needed tweaking but should be fairly easy to do under the hood of the B-3x. Having the hands-on control is a great experience. The iPad version is great because of the touch but the physical drawbars and buttons take it even further. Thanks for watching and the kind words. Keep me posted. Joyfully.

    Another interesting and very helpful video Simon--and rousing, lovely, virtuoso playing, always a pleasure. I wanted to ask if you thought the B-3X was a more persuasive emulation of the B3 than the VB3-II. Also whether you find it's a heavier load on the CPU than VB3-II. I don't wanna put you on the spot, just want the benefit of your experience and ears to get an informed opinion. Thanks, Merry Christmas!

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Před 4 lety

      Getting Stuff Done Right , well the B-3x has the advantage of being the only virtual tone-wheel organ created in partnership with Hammond/Suzuki. My impression is that IK used this to help them really get a look deep inside these mammoth musical instruments through having access to schematics, etc.. The sound to me really sounds nice and rich.
      The VB-3II is nice and light on the CPU but I do not remember running into any CPU load issues that stood our during my review.
      I am always thinking about doing A/B testing videos but it is hard to nail down exactly why o e VST sounds so different from the other.
      One thing I appreciate IK Multimedia doing is allowing you to have somewhat of a trial version you can download and experience yourself before purchasing.
      I hope that helps?
      Thanks again for always being such an encourager and for watching!

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Před 4 lety

      Another aspect that sets the B-3x apart is the integration of the IK Leslie simulation which to me has sort of an “air” about it that just adds something very special and alive to the sound.
      The Leslie VST effect works great as well but getting MIDI control to work with other instruments can get interesting.

      Thank you Simon, very helpful info, much appreciated. Based on your feedback I wish now that I had done what I almost did, which was get it for the introductory price. I guess I felt a certain loyalty to the VB3-II, felt like I still had a lot to learn exploring that instrument before I would even know what I might be I missing, if anything. My training is as a classical pianist, so this is all new, wonderful territory for me, and I feel fortunate that by sheer chance I've run into your channel and get to benefit from your guidance and playing. I was just listening to a B3 performance that I absolutely love from John Novello and his trio Niacin "I Miss You Like I Miss the Sun." The breadth of what can be expressed on a B3 is just astonishing. Thanks again for the feedback Simon, take care. m.czcams.com/video/eDEnl90uA7w/video.html

    Thanks for some really great organ reviews on GSI VB3-2 and the IK multimedia organ. Which one do you prefer playing the most?
    Is one more cpu demanding than the other?

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Před 2 lety +1

      Mads, I really love what GSI has accomplished, Guido has been a pioneer in bringing the virtual organ to us. I need to pull VB3 back up as it has been a while. I do enjoy playing the B-3X, and I guess it could be the visual experience that helps to pull you in a little more. I will say that CPU can get a little up there every once in a while. I also love the Leslie emulations.
      Another virtual drawbar organ is Blue which is also very nice, with each one having their own color and personality.

      @@PraiseTracks I just put the two demo versions at a side by side test on my i7 10700 laptop. They both sound really great, I tend to prefer the B3-X leslie over VB3-2 but it is so close and, I get very inspired playing both. When I adjusted VB-3 leslie setting fast to slow it was almose identical.
      Comparing the two ‘Whiter Shades of pale’ preset VB3 clearly wins with more personality when you eg. go to the second accord (b in the bass) - some high leakage sound shines through in VB3-2 and makes it very nice and alive!
      But most important of all: VB3 uses about 2% cpu and B-3X about 36% in the task manager. B-3X is far more power (energy) hungry as well. So I have decided to go with VB3 since I need to have cpu room for other sounds in my Gig Performer rig (Keyscape, Ample Sound and more).

      Boris, just a couple of questions. Do you have an audio/midi interface for your computer?
      Are you wanting to use B-3x as a standalone or inside a DAW host?
      You would also need to look into the KRONOS documentation to see how you could create a preset or multi that would allow you to use the slider controls to work with the drawbars.
      The KRONOS is a powerful workstation and I’m sure once you get a few of the basics locked in, there will be a lot of possibilities open up for you.

      * Look under the MIDI CONTROLLERS section and you can see what MIDI controls are assignable.
      * You can see that each control has a "CC" number assigned to it, this is the MIDI Continuous Controller number that controls that specific parameter.
      * Tap into the CC number beside the parameter you want to assign.
      * The important thing to remember here is that you need to know the CC Number for the control of the Axiom you want to assign. Leslie Speed is typically set to the Modulation Wheel which is CC1
      * Looking at a picture of the Axiom it looks like it has a display where you can see what CC numbers are assigned to a specific Axiom control and quite possibly can change them on the Axiom to match the iPad B-3x CC settings.
      * So another way is to find the control on your Axiom you want to assign and figure out the CC Number, then "tap" into the CC number on the iPad B-3x and "manually" input it there.
      MIDI Learn is a much needed feature I think so hopefully they can do this in a future update.
      I hope that helped some, please let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with.
      BTW: the iPad version is crazy!!!!

      Simeon Amburgey I find it very strange that IK didn’t include MIDI Learn on B-3X for iPad. I have SampleTank, iGrand, iLectric and Syntronik for iPad. All IK products. And all have MIDI Learn. Don’t understand why they would release B-3X without it. Hopefully, that will be in a future update.

    I cannot open IK Hammond in Cubase 5. Somebody can help me?

      The main thing that comes to mind is to make sure Cubase is pointing to the correct VST folder location where the B3x was installed. Also I think B3X is 64 bit and not sure if Cubase 5 supports 64 bit plugins. Not for sure, just trying to troubleshoot. Thanks so much for watching and if I find out anything additional I will let you know.

      I do apologize, there is just so much I am trying to process at times. I am really trying to work on improving this in the future. I do hope you found the video helpful? Thanks for watching.
