▶ABOUT US◀
Hi! We're Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe, two of the UK's most enthusiastic puzzle solvers. We have both represented the UK at the World Sudoku Championships and the World Puzzle Championships.
Thank you for watching!
Simon and Mark
I’m really looking forward to the next series: “Puzzles we missed while we were doing a series of puzzles we missed”.
😂
Oh god its an infinite loop
Thank you Simon for the solve. Always a pleasure to have one of mine featured :)
Thank YOU for the excellent puzzle!
Loved this puzzle - it's one of my favorites that I have attempted (and successfully completed) on the channel. Thanks!
I love it when Simon includes us in his thought process: "So let's do this slowly. Let's try and think about what's the absolute minimum we can put in there."
Right, otherwise there would be less point of a video :D He is basically doing this for us, which is really good and which is why I watch :)
You're videos got to be my sleeping routine. And my morning coffee wake up routine to watch what I missed while falling asleep. Thank you.
exact same here
Same over here as well. I don't know why my brain instantly goes into sleep mode when watching Simon's videos, because I find them really fascinating. But I can never do more than 10-15 min of a video, then I'm gone.
Same! It became such a routine and now Simon's voice soothes me to sleep 💤
Same here too 😀
Yellow can do a little more work early on in this puzzle: Once the 6 is placed, the other two in yellow must be less than that 6 to the thermo in box 4. The 4 and 5 in box 1 further narrows that down to 123, and the 23 in row 1 means there must be a 1 in r1c1 which therefore must also appear in the box 4 yellows where it must be on bulb of the thermo
I also did this. Was pretty helpful in advancing the solve.
Came here to post this comment, you were quicker.
Same for me, I guess a lot of people were shouting to their monitor around 10:00 about the 1 in r1c1 and r6c3! ;-)
Yeah I also found that when the 6 got placed, but I am too sleepy to shout at my screen :P
Did exactly the same yellow had to be smaller than six and r1c1 looking at 4 5 in the box and 3 2 to the right gave me the 1 and led to an easier path
Simon's break-in detection skills continue to amaze. I got so close, but I didn't realise the ramifications of the left hand side. What a fabulous puzzle from there though, I loved solving it after that help, haha. Kudos Joseph!
I did try to do this puzzle... Goodliffed all the thermos and returned in defeat!! Always better to watch the Simon or Mark anyways!!
Joining you after an hour. I really tried colours and geometry on the long thermo on the right side and failed. Now listening to the teacher ...
15 minutes and couldn’t even start it. Now watching.
Tip for anyone who struggled with this one:
Often in thermos puzzles like this (or sometimes killer and other variants) the main piece of logic focuses on cells which can all see each other. The digits on thermometers in effect "see" each other because they can contain no repeats, because if they did, the thermos wouldn't constantly increase.
So if you start solving with that in mind, it becomes a lot easier to see the effect of the long thermos, as you only need to look at cells which see the entirety of the thermo to see relationships form.
I love cracking the cryptic because they give me the dopamine of solving a puzzle without having to actually do any of the work lol :)
My time: 35 minutes!
I am loving this series of approachable puzzles.
I had a lot of fun solving them.
My normal rule is: if the video is under 30 minutes I'll absolutely try it, so I have been having a blast!
14:16
Found the breakthrough pretty quickly, but when I did my head exploded. Fun puzzle!
CTC Bingo: "So I don't think this clue is important"
Simon’s solves have more color in them than a Bob Ross painting
"Colour by numbers"😊
But less happy accidents?
Or a Farrow and Ball paint chart.
Black! Black! It's all black!!!
"Happy little threes."
Touring old videos, came across this absolute gem of a puzzle and video. I gave the puzzle a go myself, got glimmers of how to do it, watched a few seconds of you solving it, Simon, went back to my own solve, got farther, and repeat as desired until this very fun puzzle was complete for both of us. What fun this was - thanks for this video from last summer, and for all that you (and Mark, of course) do to make this channel so much fun and so interesting, day after day, year after year.
LOL at "the blueness defeated me"
Another beautiful one by Mr Nehme! I love how often his puzzles look impossible to me at first glance, but once you're in you understand the thought process. Like listening to some great piece of music you haven't heard before, and once you settle in you just close your eyes and enjoy.
8:11 you can place 1 in R1C1. The 6 must be the highest of the yellow squares, thanks to box 4. R1C1 sees 5 and 4 in its box, and 3 and 2 in its row. As soon as a yellow square is 1, it is placed in box 4, @R6C3.
Oh, haven't seen it myself. Clever!
Arghhh I managed to see the deductions for pink, green, blue and red, and somehow missed yellow, which was the one that provided the break-in. I ended up spending a lot of time on the righthand side of the grid and even got a few digits (I managed to restrict the 6 which gave me the central 789 and also one of the fives), and then got stuck. Very interesting puzzle, and I could *almost* do it!
Took me 80+ minutes to solve this, of which about an hour was just finding the initial break-in. Was about to give up but then finally spotted that top left box's leftmost column had to be filled with the first 3 digits on the lower left thermometer, and it all quickly fell into place. Oh, the time I could have saved... still happy to have solved it
I solve this puzzle and I like this setup.
It’s not easy but not too hard to think.
Set theory help me this time.
Thx Joseph Nehme for this good and fun puzzle.
24:24 - I felt pretty good about that, it's like I've learned things from their other videos.
This is one of those "I should've had that one!" puzzles. I was that final pattern recognition away from solving it.
I really loved this one - couldn't figure out how to get started, so I fast forwarded without audio until about 4:05, when it suddenly clicked for me. Once I got the big idea about how those triples worked, the puzzle flowed really smoothly!
Exploring the logic at 12:20 shows that the 5 can't go in r6c7 because there would be nothing to go after it on the thermo because of the 6 in row 6, and that putting the 5 anywhere on the thermo in box 9 would make the purple cells 789. Then you know to accommodate the 4 in box 5 that the high number has to go in r4c7, and it has to be 6.
Well, that was straight-up beautiful. Glad I got the chance to solve it.
Great Puzzle!!! That was one of the first that I've ever done without resorting to "Goodlife-ing" Very cool logic, and very fun to complete!!
The blue 245 triple in box 6 could have provided a 2 easily since 2 couldn't go on the thermo at that point so it had to go on the top square
24:57 for me. Thought the breakthrough would be on the right. But noooo.... ended up being on the left. Nice puzzle. That was fun.
Again, a really nice puzzle. More than one solve-path after the initial colouring. Very enjoyable.
First one in a while I've finished in less than the video time. Thanks for throwing in this interesting but not too hard puzzles every once in a while, it's refreshing.
I loved doing this one! Simon, you're the absolute best.
That was great fun! I clocked 27:01 which ain't all that bad. It wasn't super hard but the break-in required a good stare at the clues and reasoning why they would be there. I have started to think in terms of 'why would the setter put this here?' and try to make sense of the puzzle overall. As a consequence I tend to forget about normal sudoku rules. My brain is simonifying, I think.
Awesome puzzle with just the right amount of difficulty. Thanks.
18:17 finish. I love how the ropes on opposite ends wound up being the same triples on each. Very fun!
Well, that's the whole point of coloring. The same color means the same triple. Or I didn't understand your comment..
@@sly1024 originally I colored them differently because I matched triples of cells that were the same in columns 1-3, and different colors for triples in columns 7-9. Only at the end i saw that the triples on each side were the same.
@@markp7262 Ah, I see. 👍
The Curse of the Cursor: "I don't know if there's more we can do here..." while hovering over a 2 on a thermo cell that needs to be bigger than 3.
I struggle with these puzzles (even the ones that Simon would call approachable) and that is frustrating. Even as someone with an analytical mind (I have a BS in Mathematics and have been an actuary for over 30 years) these approaches/break-ins are not intuitive to me. All that being said watching these videos and trying to think along side Simon and Mark is one of the most beautiful and satisfying things I have ever witness. And I get to witness it twice a day along with working on all the apps. Thank you so much for creating this channel and the passion you provide in your videos.
Seems like it took me a while. My solve time itself is a hidden thermo: 43:21
The break in was so simple once you think about it, but it took me a while to spot it. I also started coloring the right side boxes, but I should've started with boxes 4 and 7.
Did it again by starting with boxes 4 and 7, and got a time of 10:19, but of course I had the experience from the first time.
Love it, I really like the way you do puzzles, but equally Mark uses brute force, 'Quantity has a Quality all its own"
Pleased I found the rope trick straight away, finished the puzzle in 19 minutes 👍🏻
With all these short solves, I have so much more free time !
That is one of the most elegant solves I watched. Greatest respect to Joseph (and Simon of course).
Thank you :)
I needed the break in until 07:15. From then on I managed. Thank you very much! Learned a lot!
That is the best use of the word triumvirate I've ever heard.
13:09 for me. I loved thermo. Very nice puzzle!
Very nice and approachable puzzle...
This was a really fun puzzle to solve. Very nice
Really enjoyed this puzzle! I took awhile finding a place to go
9:06 for me, i easily found the way to do it and without logic errors! perfect run!
A very nice puzzle, thanks Joseph. I managed to turn it into an almighty struggle, so it was nice to see Simon solve it so elegantly. I found basically all the logic (eventually), but kept looking in the wrong places for too long.
Another gorgeous puzzle! Not too tough, just right!
21min for me, took me a little while to get started but after that it was a really smooth solve. Great puzzle, really enjoyed it
nice and straightforward
That was quite a charming puzzle
Loved the solve! But I'm still eagerly awaiting Simon to hit us with another nori-nori/snake sudoku. That's the one that gives nightmares!
Yes, elegant indeed. Thank you.
Wonderful puzzle
Had missed this one the first time around, just saw it today an was able to solve in 14:56, a pretty good time for me! Definitely a really fun one.
22:38, spent too much time trying to figure out the boxes on the right before looking at the boxes on the left and finding the break in.
I did the same thing. I had some good limiting deductions on the right which made the solve much easier once I bothered to look at the left. Of course that "progress" made me spend time looking for more...
@8:51 r1c1 is a naked single 1 then u get yellow in the bulb as a 1. I was hoping u saw that!
would love to have an additional 20 Thermo puzzles added to the app. I have completed all 80. I really enjoyed the Thermo app and am currently playing both the chess and miracle sudoku apps. I do own all the apps so far and enjoy playing them. keep up the great work
Very appropriate title for the uk weather this week!!!
ahhh! 31:50. just needed a bit of a push on the box 3,6,9 logic and got it from there.. a struggle, but a good one.
First time I ever solve a puzzle in the same video length... I know if you don't have to explain ur steps you would probably be 2-3 times faster xD. However I still am happy about reaching that :''D. Nice and cheerful puzzle tho..
49:50 - proud of me. Was very fun :) Now gonna enjoy your video
13:20 today. If I didnt remember one insane sudoku you did previously that was all about dividing grid into 3 sets of 3 by colour I could move a step.
After the break-in, Simon’s and my way parted. I took a beautiful detour to enjoy the scenery a bit (30 mins) longer 😂
48:35 - but almost half an hour of that was simply fruitless colouring and staring. For some reason the break-in just eluded me until I restarted the colouring and gave it some more thought.
Well colour me pink it is Friday and it was a fun puzzle time... took me 13 mins.. really easy one (after you figure out the trick)
Really cute thumbnail!
Nice puzzle
Not an over difficult solve but fun
Since I started watching these, whenever I try the puzzle myself I now have my own internal Simonolog saying "Ah, there's a one in one of these three spaces" in my head.
When the cells break out into three groups of three, I refer to that as stratification
Nice!
"Mark will instantly pencilMARK..."
16:19 - very fun once broken into
15:30 ... Fun puzzle!
Neat thermo sudoku, just six thermos and nothing else.
This category wasn't even represented in the thermo app. Utterly mindboggling. (Yeah, I know there were some like these on this channel)
I have been doing so many arrow sudokus that I started this one by putting 9s in the bulbs of the long thermos. Whoopsie.
Very enjoyable puzzle! With that being said, I'm looking forward to some genuinely unapproachable sudokus (GUS), so I don't feel guilty about eating crisps and just watching.
"This 8's probably powerful now"...immediately ignores the impact in its own box. :D
I came here for this comment 🤣
Love this video thumbnail ^^
Interestingly, my break in was seeing all the thermo tails in box 6 and asking where digits 1, 2, and 3 would go.
Are there not six places 3 could go in box 6?
@@RichSmith77 Initially, yes. But placing 3 along the two kinked thermometers beginning in Box 5 requires 1 and/or 2 at the bulbs.
To avoid vague hand-waving, I will give a specific example. Say 3 is in r6c8. Then r6c7 is 2 and r5c6 is 1. Now 1 in box 6 is forced into r4c8. The bulb at r4c6 can be as low as a 2, but this puts a huge amount of pressure on the other bulbs in c6. The 1 in r4c8 also sees the bulb at r9c8. I forget exactly what breaks, but I'm pretty sure it was one of the longer thermometers...
A question: would this puzzle (or any with only traditional sudoku rules and thermos) still have a findable unique solution if the *directionality* of the thermos switched (i.e. decrease from the bulb end)?
For at least some puzzles, maybe all of them, you should be able to do that if you replace every digit d by 10 - d (swap 1 and 9, 2 and 8, and so on), right?
@@Anne_Mahoney I agree. I think we can say that's true for any puzzle that is purely a thermo + sudoku variant.
How does he split a cell into two separate colors? I can't seem to get that function to work when I do the puzzle in the description. Is it because he is using a different version of the app?
@Carl Gibson: Click the Gear (Settings) and turn on Multi-Colour Mode
@@LiquorStoreJon Thank you!
Hey simon when the Classic sudoku will be back?
Does Simon not know that you can hold down SHIFT and CNTRL in the web app to do the small numbers? He seems to be doing some multiple keystrokes to switch the mode. tap! tap! tap!
25:40. Skadoosh!
uuhh 20 minute video i might be able to solve this one :D
Not Simon's best solve I think, I feel like he's at his peak performance with harder puzzles!
Cool how it turned out that red = purple and yellow = green
“It’s not difficult at all”
Where that’s where you’re wrong buddy boy. My peasant brain lost ya at the first digit
Love how setters keep coming up with new twists on old themes. Didn't spot every bit of Simon's logic but 25 mins for me.
The link doesn’t work well on the phone. If I double tap it then it will zoom in and I won’t be able to zoom out anymore. Is there a way around this?
I reload the page (or click on the search box and just search again)
All your pencilmarks will still be there :)
Try reloading, "reload" option is on the bottom right on my smartphone. Saves all notations.
The only thing that works for me is closing and reclicking the link.
Weird. I can just double tap again and it zooms back out. A little frustrating in itself, but if I had to reload every time, that would be quite annoying I'd have thought...
@@wossaaaat that’s what I used to do and I can’t anymore for some reason
14:26, I missed an obvious single for quite a time, but proud to beat simons time nonetheless
23:56 my closest yet to beating Simon
Simon spoken word reciting “Hot in Here” by Nelly when?
The beginning was hard (I had to see the use of colors by Simon) and then I coulld finish by myself in ||28:43||
I was super stoked that I got it in 13:30, then I realized that the timer was paused **annoyed grunt**
Hey guys, this has been fun, but I really love this channel for the diversity of challenges you pose. Philomino, star battles, and all of the variants you bring to the table make it an exciting channel. But classic variants in overwhelm can be a bit boring.
Just a fan sharing my thoughts. Not being a hater.
I’ve done all the puzzles in this series in half the time it took Simon. Usually I need Simons help. Did I get better or did I figure out why these were missed? Beautiful logic either way
