    Here is the typical Multiport valve on most Sand Filters. This is another thing that could cause problems with the sand filter and effect filtration. Here I show you how to take the multiport valve top off and check the Spider Gasket or Spoke. If it is damaged or coming unglued it will cause dirt to leak back into the pool or out the backwash valve.
    Another telltale sign that the Spider Gasket is bad is water leaking out of the backwash pipe when the filter is running. Basically to change the Spider Gasket you will need to scrape it out with a screwdriver - make sure you get all the pieces out and don't gouge the plastic it sits in. Use one of the two adhesives I list in the video to secure the Spider Gasket back on the Multiport valve and don't tur nthe handle or turn the pol on for 24 hours.
    If you notice water leaking out of the top of the handle and it is very hard to turn -chances are the o-ring on the handle got jammed into the O-ring or the O-ring went bad and is torn. At that point it may be time for a new Multiport valve but some people have had success changing out the O-ring in the spring -it is not easy to do.

    All of the lateral looked in good condition I didn't notice nothing different from the rest. I'm starting to leaning more on the spider gasket. My supplier has the top valve for the T-240BP1 but they don't carry just the gasket. The more I talk to others in the profession the more they tell me it's more likely the gasket that's either twisted or starting to wear out. But if you know where I can get the gasket I would appreciate it. I have tried looking online but they only have it for the T-240BP2. Thank you for responding.

Have been struggling to get it going again since, it seems to be humming.. Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

      Yes, sounds like the spider gasket. Change the complete valve or the spider gasket and you will be fine. I will swap out the complete valve if the handle is unusually stiff. If everything works fine then just do the spider gasket.

    Hello. Thank you for making these videos. I just changed the sand in my Hayward and replaced the whole valve unit at the same time. Filtering works good. Recirculation works good. Both with normal pressure (about 12). However when I backwash or rinse it barely trickles out when before it would gush out in the same volume and pressure as it did when filtering. Waste works well, which means there isnt any blockage in the backwash line. Any idea why the pressure is so low in backwash and rinse??

    I just changed the sand for a new customer of mine. When I first ran the system I saw debris and sand coming out. So, I suggested to them to replace the sand. Now that I have replace the sand there's no more sand but whatever I vacuum does come out from the return side. The pool doesn't look hazy but could it be that I need to change the multiport valve. The o ring for the multi port looks good and I did lubed it.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  Před 10 lety

      It sounds like something is amiss with the multi-port valve. When the filter pressure increases when you vacuum that spider gasket might be expanding in there. This is more typical of a push/pull backwash valve but it can happen with the multi-port. How did the laterals look when you changed the sand?
      It's possible that one could be leaking. Maybe test it with some DE to see if it comes out of the return line without the vacuum attached. Not a common problem as a lateral leak you would see sand also and not just the stuff you are vacuuming up.

    G'day Mate and greetings from "Down-under". I backwashed my pool a few days ago and noticed, the next day after my kreepy krawley had been operating during the night that my water level had dropped. I checked later in the evening and made a mark of the water level and the next day, after the KK had been operating as usual, the water level had again dropped. I can only consider that some sand may have found its way into a valve, (possibly the rinse valve) and allowed water to escape through to waste.
    Have you any ideas? If so, how can I fix it? Thankyou.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  Před 7 lety

      Probably their is a leak in the Multiport valve. I assume it goes into your drain and you can't visually see the water leaking while the pool is running - You will have to open up the Multi-port valve and check the Spider Gasket. It could be worn out causing water to leak out the backwash in filter mode.

      @SPL  Před 10 lety +1

      So water is leaking out of the filter from the backwash pipe? Are you saying enough is leaking to drain down the pool? If so the entire multiport valve could be bad and not just the spider gasket on the bottom. Spider Gasket keeps each chamber separate so a small trickle type leak means that the spider gasket is bad. This sounds like a bigger leak.

      Thank you for you're free and gentle advice ! We live in Belgium (Europe) and the company who built our pool, doesn't care about us anymore :(. When the pool was finished, after 4 months, we noticed two bumps under the liner. The pool is built with isomo blocks, which are filled up with concrete. The pool cover resides in the pool, behind a false wall. This wall is fitted on to the side walls, and my guess is, that the person who put in the liner, added some cement to the false wall fittings, and that didn't dry enough. The pool builder says we had to report the problem while they were still building. But how could we, we saw the problem only after 4 months. The pool builder said he couldn't care less... So any issue we now have regarding the installation, we're on our own. Luckily there'se someone like you!

    I have a pool that has an old pump motor, and old filter sand system. After a few hours of it running strong, it then starts to barely blow any water out of the filter into the pool. I replaced the pump and the sand, after a few hours it does the same thing. I backwash, rinse and put it back to normal operation. It will work for a few hours and then barely have any circulation again. To note the motor never cuts off on the new pump. I have a very slight leak from the multi valve port ring to lock it into place but I didn’t think that would be my issue. Anyone have any thoughts?

      The air coming in could be the issue.

    I have water pouring from my backwash pipe when the Multiport valve is set on filter. When I put the setting on waste the water stops pouring out. I just bought a new Multiport valve thinking the spider gasket was messed up...and the new one is doing the same...Please, what am I doing wrong! (I have a Hayward pump and filter).

      Yes the same with me. I have the backwash in the filter position too and I also had to "guess" the other valve positions, being everything is off by 180 degrees. It has been a nightmare.

    For some reason my multi port is wasting my pool no matter what setting I am on. Even when I switch it filter it starts wasting the pool. I had a pool company out here to fix a pressure problem and he changed the spider gasket and the lid gasket. Ever since then it will only shoot water out like its wasting the pool. Anyone have any ideas?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  Před 9 lety

      +denice119 It could be that the spider gasket is still leaking or a defect of the unit itself. A Mickey-Mouse quick fix is to go to Home Depot and by a ball valve to attach to the 2" or 1.5" backwash pipe and close the valve. This will prevent water leaking out. I have this on a couple of accounts and it is an effective stop gap. Usually no gluing is needed as it is not under any water pressure. Just stick it on and close the valve. Just get the non-threaded type.

      saadi saade You can try to force it but that may cause it to start to leak water. The spring is won out in the handle. I suggest finding the part and model # of your valve and just installing a new one. It is pretty easy to do. Just remove all of the screws and insert the new one in. Around $80-$110

    Hello great vids .I have a problem with my Sand Filter, can't figure it out, I am getting no pressure showing on the gauge when the pump and filter are running in filter or normal mode, i also do not see water in the glass that is attached to the sand filter.The water has good flow, the pump sucks it into the skimmer then into the filter and returns it to the pool with excellent flow but it shows no pressure on the filter gauge,the gauge is new,, when i backwash it the glass on the filter fills with dirty water, when i rinse it ,,the glass fills with water but like i said when i run it in normal of filter mode i see no water in the glass, and i see no pressure on the pressure gauge ,also the return is sending some sand back into the pool.Thanks

      Canadian Guitar Hack Sand can leak in with a bad spider gasket in some cases. You can run it on recirculate and that will circulate the water and bypass the filter.
