    If there is air in your Sand Filter it will affect the function of the filtration more so than if you had air in a D.E. or Cartridge type filter. The Sand filter is designed basically to have just sand and water in the tank. As dirty water enters the filter through the top it is drawn through the sand on the bottom and clean water is returned out into the pool. If there is a pocket of air in the top of the filter the flow of water is impeded and the filter will not clean as efficiently. You may also see a rise in the tank pressure even if the filter is relatively clean.
    Sometimes you will hear air in your sand filter and even after you bleed it out it will return. You may have an air leak somewhere in your pool plumbing or equipment -at the pump or at the pool valves. Here I walk you through some areas where the air leak may be coming from. The O-ring on top may also be causing the problem. You can remove the multiport valve and check it.
    Another common problem is that the pump installed is too much HP -- too large for your filter type. This is very common in the industry. Many installers and builders think that the bigger pump the better. But in most cases that is not true. In the case of your sand filter a very large pump like the one in this video (2 HP) can have adverse effects on the sand filter performance. You will have constant high filter pressure, you will hear gurgling or air type noises coming from the filter and according to the manufacturer the sand can be ground down from a pump with too much HP.
    Another thing that could cause a problem is a displaced or damaged air bleeder. If you have a sand filter with a side mount multiport and an air relief and pressure gauge on top --chances are there is a plastic air tube running from the base of the filter up to the top of the filter. Sometimes they come loose or get damaged and this will cause air to be in the filter also.

    The Seaklear that I use does and I think most probably do as that it how they make the water clear. The straight Floc is more powerful.

    Hello, first off I'll have to say your videos are outstanding! Keep doing them as you do a fantastic job explaining it all. I have a problem with a new system (SandPro 35d) I bought yesterday .
    I put everything on correctly as the pool place/guy told me to do... No air bubbles no leaks, BUT I almost do not have any psi pressure. I'm right at 2-4 psi. The gentleman told me to backwash,then rinse then put it back on to filtration mode... It did not fix the problem. If you could help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a lot for your time and God bless!

    Just as an FYI, a simple fix to the pump being to big is to install a ball valve on the discharge side of the pump(about 2 feet away if possible). Once installed, put the valve to full open, slowly start to close the valve until the gurgling noise goes away.

      +Aaron Parker Great idea. So by slowing the pool return it shirks down the pump.

      Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Yes sir! It's exactly what you're doing by plugging the discharge with your hand. I only carry one size of pump, then I valve the outlet if I need to.
      Love your vids!!

    How do you connect the air bleeder? Lije our pumps instructions were not good ..didnt said anything about that so we let it sit on top of the sand and water

  • @SPL
    @SPL  Před 11 lety

    Could be just that the filter is dirty now and it needs a good back washing. Sometimes the leak will stop once the pressure goes down a bit.

    Prepperchickie-
    If your PSI is 10 all the time, you either have:
    -No dirt to pick up in the pool,
    -the filter is hugely oversized,
    -or the gage is stuck.
    -Or, you may have a pump with a worn impeller that cannot push a higher pressure, (equals low flow)
    -or pump suction problems that hinders the discharge pressure.
    -Or unseen tank leaks that hold back pressure gains.
    Time to troubleshoot. Can you see the filter discharge to the pool? Start there.

    According to the manufacturer it should drop below 20 psi after a backwashing so you are in the clear. I don't think 17 PSI is high.

    Just curious, if there is an air leak wouldn't it only be coming from the suction side of the pump? Any kind of leak on the pressure side would have water coming out instead of pulling in air.

    Under normal conditions, fluid flows will be from a high pressure zone to a low pressure zone. If a high pressure systems leaks, it will not suck air in. It will leak air or water out. Simple physics. That's how the bleeder valve works. The pressure in the tank blows out the air at the top, allowing the water to fill the tank.

    My filter runs at or below 10psi on the filter gauge, is there a minimum psi that it should run at?

    Help. If you DO have air (or suspected air) in your sand filter and no bleeder valve, how do you fix it??? My pump keeps turning off (I assume it is overheating) and my filter pressure is high even after backwashing. I think I got air in the system when I emptied the pump basket.

    To understand tank pressures, you must take into account the pump discharge capabilities, both pressure and flow. The sand acts as a partial-blockage in a wide section on the line (the filter housing). As dirt builds up in the sand, the blockage gets more dense. Once it's clean, the blockage is less. What determines the actual pressure upstream of the sand is the pump discharge. An over-sized, over tank design pressure pump can over-pressure and burst the filter, no matter how clean the sand is. There is no automatic over-pressure control on the tank, such as a spring-loaded relief valve on the top. The goal is to size the pump and the filter to work in conjunction with each other, and then match that cleaning ability to the pool. Normally, a 10 psi gain from a clean filter reading is an indicator of time to change, no matter what the initial pressure was. Just need to make sure the pressure is never over the design pressure of the tank.

    You talked about everything else except what I wanted to know. How do you release air from a sand filter..

    • @SPL
      @SPL  Před 8 měsíci

      From the air bleeder valve if it has one.

    • @matthewgray577
      @matthewgray577 Před 8 měsíci

      No, it doesn't have one being a sand filter.

    I have zero pressure on the pressure gage. I just replaced the filter sand and drain and filled the pool but now I don't have good flow or pressure. Could there be an air leak?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  Před 2 lety

      Could be. check the pump impeller for debris as well.

    • @BiGIVIiKe1
      @BiGIVIiKe1 Před 2 lety

      Prime the pump first, fill with water before turning on. Definitely check the implore for blockage WITH POWER OFF! If there’s flow & still showing zero on your gauge. Replace the gauge. They go bad.
