  • Kelly with Safe & Vault Store shows how to replace your safe handle that was broken in shipping. If you receive your safe and the handle has broken, it's easy to replace. Here's how.
You will need the following tools:
    Glove
    Basic # 2 Phillips Screwdriver
    Wrench or socket set
Hammer and a small piece of wood
    Paper towels
    Grease (Safe lubricant or Vaseline)
Step 1: 00:13 Have Safe & Vault Store send you a new handle at no charge.
Step 2: 00:21 Open your safe up using your glove. The handle will still work but the edges may be sharp.
Step 3: 00:52 Use your # 2 Phillips Screwdriver to unscrew all of the screws on the back panel. Set the panel off to the side.
Step 4: 01:48 Once back panel is off, you will need to determine where you need to change the handle out. There will be quite a bit of grease so clean it off.
Step 5: 02:30 Loosen the nut on the back of the handle and lay out all the parts on a paper towel so you don't lose them. Make sure to put them in order you take them off so you don't lose track.
Step 6: 03:18 If the Inside lever is too tight, take a hammer and a small piece of wood to loosen up the lever.
Step 7: 03:54 Once that lever is out, you can remove the handle. Just slide it out. Sometimes there is an extra washer in there so make sure to keep an eye out for extra parts.
Step 8: 04:14 Make sure to compare the broken handle to the new handle Safe & Vault Store sent you to make sure they are the same. They should look identical depending on the safe manufacturer.
Step 9: 04:37 We're going to add grease to the new handle. Just make sure it is in the same spots as the old handle.
Step 10: 05:26 Now that your handle is all greased up, you're going to put it through the door as you did when you pulled it out. You want to make sure there is no grinding when you're putting it in. If there is, you need to add more grease.
Step 11: 05:50 Now just replace the inside lever. Make sure the handle is in the right position. Once you've got your lever on there and you move the handle on the outside to the downward position, it is now locked.
Step 12: 06:14 Now you can replace the washer and nut the same way you took them off. Tighten the nut with your wrench.
Step 13: 06:46 Now that you've got your handle back installed, just check it a couple times. Make sure it is moving and feels good.
Step 14: 06:54 Put your back panel on. Make sure the lock change key hole lines up with the lock. Start with the screw in the top right corner and thread it halfway in. Once that screw is in, go ahead and screw in the bottom left screw. Complete the rest of the screws and tighten them.
Step 15: 07:50 Now that your back panel is on you're good to go. You've got a brand new handle and it works great.

Nice job! Now let's see if you can handle this question. Can I change my safe's lever for a spoke handle, or are the mechanics different? ~thanks
