      Finally, we get a true union of the two great actors needed to bring us cinema's greatest villain! Had they been able to mix in a little bit of David Prowse, the homage would have been complete, but this is definitely sufficient & honorable. RIP David Prowse, and thank you Hayden Christensen & James Earl Jones.

      I'm personally of the opinion that the conflict within Anakin manifests itself in the duality of Anakin and Vader.
      Similar to the scene in Rebels when he's talking to Asoka, In that moment, I think it was Anakin speaking more than Vader. In his own way, Anakin was telling Obi-Wan that this wasn't his fault, and that he shouldn't feel sorry or guilty for him. Anakin wants to reassure Obi-Wan that his choices were his own and it wasn't Obi-Wan's fault he turned out this way. OTOH, Vader is also speaking, telling Obi-Wan he doesn't want his pity.
      This duality, and how it eventually influences Obi-Wan's world view, is one of my fav things about this show.

    In episode three, Vader tells Obi Wan:
    "I am what you made me"
    He takes no responsibility for his own downfall, and is still so angry and vengeful, dragging him through the flames.
    Now, when Obi Wan apologises, Anakin absolves him. It isn't ego or arrogance - it is "I made my choices, I will live with them, and don't try to save me".

    I love how the background environment is really reflective of the emotions between them.
    In their first duel on Mustafar, the background is fiery and explosive, showing the raw anger and hurt between the two recently close friends.
    Here their duel takes place, on a barren dark and desolate planet, where there is no life, reflecting their long dead friendship. There is only sadness, regret and hatred.
    In their final duel on the death star, the background is polished and metallic. They've long moved on from their emotions toward each other, they simple see each other as enemies to be dispatched with in a cold and professional manner.

      Right on all counts but angsty isn't appropriate. It's such an immense depth of despair. The loss of his mother fractured his mind. Anakin retreated and what becomes Vader takes over to ensure that he can never be hurt again.
      Though, Vader was lying when he said he killed Anakin. He was trying to break Kenobi's heart even more because the apology was hurting Anakin. This part is just speculation. I think it's accurate, given Anakin's return to control just before he died on the Death Star and him saying, *_"tell your sister you were right."_* Anakin killed the Ro2 Sith in a single moment; finally restoring balance.

      I think you're right. I think somewhere in one of the newer comics series it touches on Vader's regret of his choices. Hayden himself said that there was a good amount of conflict in the character he tried to portray, and I think he's referencing this scene specifically. Not to forget the attention to detail of lighting. Even when you see it, there's essentially no blue on Vader's helmet, mostly just the mix on his face. A bit of the good that's suppressed within.

      It's a bit more than that, yes Vader is truly remorseful that he's become what he's become. He's fought his whole life to stop the people he's become. At the same time Vader telling Obi-Wan that he isn't his failure, that he didn't kill Anakin that from the moment he killed those younglings he killed the man he was. In short Vader is telling Obi-Wan that stop feeling sorry for who I am and what happened to me you're only doing what we've been doing all this time, it was me who failed. Be free of YOUR guilt. You tried to guide me to the right path but I let myself go this way. I killed the man I once was and I have to live knowing this fact.

      I think that the screenwriters made a mistake here. I love the action and drama in this scene; but Vader should have handed Obi Wan a second defeat since Vader should be nearly unbeatable by this point--and thus, it would definitely be now left up to Obi Wan and/or Yoda to train Luke and/or Leia to defeat him.

  • @DanielGonzalez-mw1mp
    @DanielGonzalez-mw1mp Před rokem +185

    There’s so much great subtext and cinematography in this scene. Vader saying “I am not your failure” says he’s accepted his actions, even if he is a. A casualty manipulation. And it hints to me of not wanting Obi-wan’s pity. Vader already hates himself for his actions and having kenobi’s pity makes all that pain come back, not to mention feel like one more insult from the Jedi Order.
    All this is happening with the blue sheen of a lightsaber to symbolize that last bit of Anakin left in Vader, much like when he met Ahsoka again, shortly before the Vader side of him takes back over and the sheen turns red.

      ACTING
      The moment Obi Wan sees his friend he relaxes his position, leaving his defensive side position to be face to face and gives a very little smile, showing his hope to get him back, he even takes a little step towards him.
      Then he stands still with wet eyes, channeling his emotions into an apology.
      The moment he realizes his friend is truly gone he steps backs and takes some seconds to accept the truth.
      He goes from feeling hopeness, to sadness to realization and aceptance.

      @alonsofrancescutti4956 Před rokem +18

      "I'm not your failure" for me has two meanings. The first one is that Anakin does not want/like to be belittled by Obi-wan. He's trying to say "treat me as an equal, I've made my own choices, this is my path whether you like it or not, I am not a less of version of myself, this is me".
      And likewise the other meaning is "Don't take it personal Obi Wan. I've become what I am not beacause of your inaction/ actions but because this was my decision. Darth Vader is not a by-product of our relationship. Don't blame yourself for what it happened. I am a man and I take full responsability of my actions. And, more importantly, I show no regrets of my past actions."

      It's a good topic to talk about. During their first fight, Vader says 'I am what you made me', fully blaming Obi-Wan and his defeat at Mustafar for the monster he has become. The landscape and sky are perfect for this and yes, this is up there with ROTS IMO. Obi Wan did fail Anakin, the Council failed him by putting him at Palpatine's side when he wasn't equipped to handle it. They were distracted while he was on his downward spiral and he has reason to be pissed. Palpatine was the only person who offered to "help" deal with Anakin's fear of losing Padme so this makes perfect sense. The dialogue and performances were as good as it gets, I enjoyed the series from the start and to all the haters out there, I hope this pulled the series out of the fire. It's difficult to tell this story within the constraints of what we know will happen in the future, I believe they did a good job with this.

    Here is a sad fact about this fight: The last scene is a parallele of the 15th episode of the 4th season of The Clone Wars.
    In this scene he screamed Obiwan because he wants to destroy him (or wanting Obiwan to end his suffer knowing that he lost everything). In TCW Anakin screamed Obiwan as he lost someone important to him.
    The camera angle is also not discussed enough. The camera angle above in both shows shows what Anakin has before and what he has after. In TCW we can see Anakin Ahsoka and Obiwan together which symbolized that Anakin has still people important to him. The light represent that he is still good. The last scene of Obiwan only shows Darth Vader which symbolized that Anakin lost his last true friend and everything that is dear to him which can be represented in one word: Loneliness. There is also no light above him anymore. The only light source we see here is from his lightsaber (I know there is a little bit of light around but bear with it for now) which is a weapon. Unlike the TCW the light comes from a weapon which represents how he felt about those who are dear to him right now: RAGE.
