Modern trains with spaces out electric motors have very good acceleration. I with they pushed the motors more. It'll save a lot of time for local stoppers as they save a lot of time accelerating and breaking.
The schedule is set up so it doesn't matter what unit, they can all keep to time (theoretically). And since that includes 319s still, the schedule reflects that, and the 331s have no need to go fast. Once the 319s go however, the schedule will likely be changed to 323 timings, letting us see a bit more from the 331s, although still not their full potential.
yeah but it's a nothingburger. Speed and acceleration is down to the driver and signal distancing. If you've got a good distance to the next signal and you're ready to stop for it then I see no issue vs continuous full power with the next signal 150 yards down
They're actually the fastest accelerating trains in UK at a rate of 1.3 m/s2 Edit: OMFG STOP FIGHTING IN THE REPLIES ABOUT WHICH TRAIN IS FASTER AT ACCELERATING. This comment has obviously aged, so please have some common sense 😔
The fastest accelerating train in the UK is the southeastern "javelin", they accelerate at 1.6 m/s, which is all the more impressive consdering they're geared for 140mph running.
That makes no sense - they have twice as many coaches but also twice as many motors. They should accelerate about the same.... they probably just don't where you are because of speed limits or similar
They rarely depart at this speed sadly. I still *feel* the 345 accelerates quicker even if the reported stats say otherwise. czcams.com/video/xxb35_oBsV4/video.html
@@DanTheGamerAndTrains The only difference is the acceleration (the 397 has less acceleration, but it's still good (0.92 m/s2) for a higher top speed of 125 MPH).
It looks impressive but the speed is actually a lot slower than a modern train would be passing a single yellow. When the HST sets were introduced on the ECML it used to be said that under 4 aspect signalling you run at 125mph on greens, 100mph on double yellow and 60mph on a single yellow. As a rough guide 4 aspect signals are placed about 1200yds apart, a HST in a emergency (under ideal conditions) can stop from 125mph to zero in about 1400yds. In effect it means if a driver has 200 - 300yds sighting of a single yellow even a 125mph he ought to be able to stop the red.
@@modelsteamers671 I was taught never to chase a red. Why rush up to it, you'll only have to stop when you get there? Maybe they're expecting it to step up beforehand but that's dangerous because one day it won't...
@@petec2583 I agree but the original poster commented that the EMU seemed to be going fast on a single yellow. It's not easy to assess the speed in the video but I kinda looks like 30 - 40 mph, with modern traction a driver wouldn't ordinarily be concerned about travelling at that speed on a single yellow.
Jesus! I think what happened was the driver left the brakes on while applying power so the force built up and when the brakes released it just propelled itself to Mars
Sorry to bust your idea brake handle and power handle is combined so above is impossible....there is a hill start function but that doesn't keep the full brake presure on the disks and wouldn't give effect you where describing....just powerful motors....dry rail...and straight to max power! Oh and as a electric powered train fed by ohl...few or no other trains in section drawing power...
Definitely! In fact the drivers had to receive a change to training which was to ease on the acceleration because, when they were first introduced they were thrashing too hard that passengers would fall if standing or slide about on seats! A top acceleration of 1.33m/s^2, that’s what would happen! 😅

That was a quick acceleration. By the way these Northern 331s and 195s are WAYYYYYYYYYYY better than those noisy and bumpy Pacers.
They cost a lot more, so you'd hope so.
But they don't have a better legacy
The 331s (1.3 m/s2) have a top acceleration of 0.94 m/s2 quicker than Pacers (0.46 m/s2)
I personally prefer the sprinters.

That is northern trying to go by their timetable LMAO 😂
Finally good trains for Manchester, Leeds...
I nearly fell over when it departed Lime Street, at fairly low acceleration, I imagine I would have been on the floor with that acceleration haha!
nice video, I have never seen a 331 accelerate that fast before, I bet the driver was like: gas gas gas I'm gonna step on the gas lol
