In the case of raccoons… you can absolutely quarantine the animal and wait to see if there is recovery. The most common route is euthanasia for raccoon.

I raised coons from babies 👶 💕 because people (humans) are stupid and naive... leave them be. And yeah if you are ignorant and THINK you are going to make a friend, perhaps 🤔, but you are NOT using the brain GOD gave you properly and as was said, YOU WILL look like you fought a running circular saw! 😉
Now as for me I can tell you that YES a Raccoon can make an adorable and loving pet 🥰 I have done it. BUT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND God gave you a brain for more than just running the organs in your body; Coons have NOT become domestic pets for a reason. That is that they All have DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES and various temperaments. Raising a coon baby where YOU are all they know as a parent, provider, and protector, WILL TURN ON YOU "PRESUMABLY" for no reason. I'll tell you, even as a loving pet 1min emotionally they will think something, or feel something and lash out on you, because we don't know what they may be thinking from one moment to the next.
My beloved Squiggles had bit me at least 5 times within a year. Once just because he got jealous of me petting his brother whom he lived his entire life with because HE wanted my affection totally at that moment. Soooo much more I can say about COONS... but Soooo many are needlessly "MURDERED" because of naivety and strait up cruelty and fear FROM STUPID HUMANS. Sometimes yes they NEED to be put down, but just like you would if they were your pet dog 🐶, they needed the suffering to end. Humanly, NOT OUT OF FEAR, IGNORANCE, OR CRUELTY. MANY HUMANS are cruel, afraid, & BARBARIC.
PEACE OUT, and love y'all ❤️✌️😉.

Anyhow they came by to look at him & brought a rifle. I thought they would shoot him, no question about it. But they used a stick with a noose on the end to catch him. He didn't put up a fight. Animal control let him go, didn't even remove him from my yard. I haven't seen him since.

      @chriscrittersrescue Před rokem

This is a common misconception concerning racoons, that if they are seem out in the daytime it automatically means it is infected with the Rabies virus. This is not true, and continuing to spread this false information leads to many innocent racoons, and other "nocturnal" animals, being needlessly killed. All animals have a place in our ecosystem, and the killing of any animal because of ignorance is not okay at all. Mother raccoons with baby kits come out during the day to forage and eat before staying in at night with their babies to protect them from the predators lurking at night such as the male raccoon. In the dark, it's harder to see, so it makes it harder to keep all their kits safe so they come out during the day, and when the kits begin to grow up, the mother will start bringing them outside in the daytime to teach them how to forage, fish, how to open river clams with rocks, and how to protect themselves from other animals that may want to hurt them. Young male racoons continue to stay in and out awake during the day, and sleep at night for a few years even after leaving the family consisting of grandmothers, daughters, and granddaughters, and the baby male racoons stay with their family for up to three years before setting off on their own. So when you hear an animal is nocturnal, take that as not a dead set rule for each individual of that species. Any nocturnal animals, who are physically able to be out during the day, can be seen out during the day without it automatically meaning that they are rabid, or sick. If they are rabid there will be signs and symptoms you couldn't attribute to any other illness. Also, another animal that gets a bad rsp for being put during the daytime is is opossum. They are generally considered nocturnal, though they can get be seen out in the daytime also. No opossum you see in the daytime will not have rabies because they have a natural immunity to the disease. So when you see one bare their eeth, and hiss at you when you find yourself in front of one taking the trash outside, don't worry that they have rabies. Also they eat ticks, and lots of them. They are also immune to many tick-borne diseases such as Lyme and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. So pass the information along to educate others on the wildlife we share the outdoors with, and even sometimes the indoors as well.

Injured, potentially drunk as others have stated from eating fermented foods.
Many nasty illnesses. Distemper has been bad in some areas.
Rabies is ALWAYS a possibility with wildlife, so don't just go poking it and touching it. If he'd just been in a deep sleep, a raccoon that size can react in fear VERY fast, and do you pretty decent damage.

The last thing you want to do is just LEAVE it there.
If you leave it behind, and it was actually Rabid, the Rabies will spread through carnivores eating it.
If you take it home, quarantine it in a travel carrier or outdoor kennel, for Ten (10) days.
Put a bit of food/water in with it, and watch to see if they eat it drink.
If any food or water is consumed, the likelihood of it being Rabies is unlikely.
However, don't let that fool you into a false positive.
A very sick animal may not be able to eat or drink, out of weakness.
So, if you're a Caring person, and the Animal is not showing aggression, force feed/water it.
Doing this for a period of time, say up to a week, will Definitely give you an indication of it being infected or not.
NOTE: Learn the Signs and Stages of Rabies! And FYI, the ONLY good you'll get from wearing gloves, is that you won't be touching it's body. A Raccoon will -not Can but WILL shred your hands regardless of what you're wearing.
