I stand by that the Year of Luigi itself was never bad. As the games released for it and the treatment of Luigi was pretty decent. Its just every game came with a little catch that didn't allow them to hit their full potential. And yes, Nintendo choosing to do this at one of their lowest points due to Wii U also hurt it a lot. Overall though, I look back on it fondly because it was nice to see our boi get some Ws after years of mistreatment. Makes me wish they did this again with other Mario characters or even Nintendo characters.
I think Dream Team did a perfect job with Luigi. He’s literally the game’s main gimmick, and his importance is highlighted FAR more than Mario’s IMO. Yeah Mario goes into his dreams and gives him courage, but Luigi was the key to a lot of problems, ESPECIALLY convincing the Zeekeeper to take them to Bowser’s Castle.
Luigi being my favorite Bro, it hurts to see that potential not being fully realized. Especially as a Mario and Luigi series fan, I couldn't bring myself to get Dream Team due to the bloated and tutorial heavy nature of the game.
The saddest part of the Year of Luigi was the tragic passing of Luigis original actor in the west, Danny Wells. Notably in the Mario Super Show. Can't believe he's been gone this long. Rest in peace
Yeah. I found that to be really unfortunate timing. Danny Wells wasn’t the best Luigi as Charles Martinet perfected a voice that best fits his character and design but Wells is the most memorable Luigi because he was the first to play him and also because the Super Mario Super Show is such an iconic show that kids from the 80s remember so well.
I want more Years of Luigi. It wasn't a bad idea I just think too many people didn't take it serious enough to understand how Luigi is just as important as Mario is.
I want another year of Luigi, just so it can be a redemption arc for what happened before. The concept was good, but it felt like their wasn’t a ton. It also would have been great if Luigi made a couple of cameos in other games apart from just Mario games

Dream Team is solid but it's the poster child to how heavy tutorialized games have become. Plus, it didn't need like ten different ways to traverse the dream world, they could have half of it and instead had creative ways to combine them into platforming challenges like what the previous games did.

I think the yeqr of Luigi could of greatly benefitted in his own paper Luigi game featuring the story he went through in the thousand year door cuz after every new area boss was defeated you saw Luigi speaking to a new partner and the area he explored sure it was kinda embarrassing on a few occasions with characters berating him but it could of been better written or whatever like they exaggerated the events but Luigi proved his mettle I just hope Daisy can keep the train going and finally start getting more and more representation in mainline games like how shes in Wonder
I 1000% agree, I've been waiting for YEARS for the version of TTYD where we get to actually follow Luigi and his partners and see what they are doing! Though, I can't remember if it's cannon for not, but isn't the reason he has so many stories to tell is because all his partners mistake him for Mario and ask him for help? I know Year of Luigi being the blame for this started as a joke, but I feel this has led to others taking it seriously. I know recently MojoPlays made a video on top worst things that ever happened to Luigi, and while they talked about this in a joking manner, they still made it sound like Year of Luigi was the legit reason 2013 was a financial failure for Nintendo, though knowing the WatchMojo channels with their lack of research, this sadly wasn't surprising (which is why I barely watch them anymore.) In addition to the references to it in a few games afterwards, I also don't think Nintendo sees it as a failure because their UK Twitter page did the Month of Luigi event in October 2019 to celebrate the release of Luigi's Mansion 3.
The side effect of nerds online pretending to be financial experts of the industry. When every video on the topic released the past couple years highlights the money Nintendo lost that year, viewers just take it as gospel the whole event was some flop without considering other factors.
I feel like Nintendo should explore more games with their other characters more often, like what would a Waluigi game be like? Or Daisy would she be a side scrolling beat em up? How about a game about Zelda herself? Or making a zelda game where Ganondorf is the main character this time around.

Or would ya prefer the Trident aka: "F you in particular" the weapon. Where it lacks in AOE capabilities, it greatly makes up for in its dueling potential against elite enemies and bosses. Anything brave, stupid, or delusionally foolhardy enough to stand against you with a health bar just decreed themselves nothing more than a farm animal, and you're the entire slaughterhouse industry.

Yeah it did, both games used the same strategy of only slightly modifying the overworld theme. And honestly, I liked the aspect in both games, dunno why this dude is complaining about it (or why he thought BiS didn't do the same lol). I especially liked it in DT, since there's supposed to be a connection between the dream world and real world, so using the same music but "dreamified" made sense.
The biggest issue with New Super Luigi U is that based on the cover and everything about it, it looks like LITERALLY New Super Mario Bros. U but with Luigi instead of Mario. I didn't even realize until way later that all the levels were new and unique or that the game was basically a harder and better version of the other game. Just really kinda bad marketing, and I'm probably not the only one who thought it was just the same game with a new coat of paint.
My favorit character from the Mushroom Kingdom is also Luigi, so i totally agree that it would be nice if Luigi got his own platformer game series. At least he gas the Luigi's Mantion games.

3:56 Since Dark Moon was on the 3DS, it makes more sense to make it a more linear game. The first one eventually made it to the 3DS in 2018 and it could barely run it. Next Level Games made the right choice when doing a mission structure for 2. (Because imagine 2 in the style of 1 and 3 but running at like 7 frames per second)
There's such a thing as "poor optimization" you know. It being "mission-based" doesn't automatically mean it'd run better. There were bigger, more "open" games that ran just fine on the original 3DS, like Ocarina of Time 3D & Majora's Mask 3D. There's no reason the 3DS should've had such issues rendering _a few rooms and some hallways._

You mentioned how the 3DS "could barely run [the 1st game]", which is why I _started_ by mentioning "poor optimization". The 3DS had games that weren't designed like that, with larger environments and ran perfectly fine. Hell, even some of the missions in Dark Moon let you wander around most, if not all, of an area without much problem. (But I imagine they were stretched pretty thin back then and probably didn't have enough resources to smooth things out.)
My Mom was such a BIG Nintendo Fan that she named my brother and I after the Mario Brothers. Now that my brother has kids of his own, he's doing the same thing except he's keeping the pool of naming choices wider than just Nintendo. He has 3 Sons now named Link (Legend of Zelda) Max (Goof Troop / A Goofy Movie) and Miles (Spider-Man) .

Luigi’s mansion 2 is very near and dear to my heart. When it released I was around 4 or 5 years old and I used to always play on my brothers 3ds, he got Luigi’s mansion 2 and he said I wasn’t allowed to play it. Eventually this barrier dropped and I was allowed to play the game, and 4 year old me fell in love. I would always play that game and, for a 4 year old, I was actually pretty good. I think I even managed to beat the game on my lonesome. I have very fond memories of playing that game from when I was 5 to when I was 7 and it will always be a loved game for me. So excited for the remake on the switch, too.

Luigi has always been my most favorite character from any franchise of all time. my oldest childhood toy is a luigi figure from mario kart 64 i got from toys r us in the 90s and my most favorite toy growing up was my plush luigi from mario party 5. from what i see those plush luigi are worth near 400 a piece now.
Luigi became the princess in distress in the Mario Movie while Peach can randomly pull an Ice Flower out of her ass and blast her way out of Bowser's castle, yep, make perfect God damn sense!

I will always remeber the year of Luigi, because i have a homebrewed year of luigi 3ds XL, and it's really funny pointing out it isnt a mario anniversary celebration, its specifically the year of Luigi, which is neat imo The irony is the console came with digital redeemable games... All of which were the Mario titles, granted ones that included Luigi in some way, but imagine how defeated I was getting the Luigi console, but they didn't include any of the games featured by the celebration as the preloaded games. I can't be too upset though, because the Mario titles were the latest and most popular back in 2013, and considering I was still able to claim them to my Nintendo account as recently as 2020 (my sister never redeemed them to her account I guess...?), That's was really impressive. I'm glad I did redeem them just in case, though, since the store shut down recently, which lead to the homebrewing the console. I never intend to sell it, so not like it matters.
I bought the limited edition Silver Luigi 3DS XL and I still use it. I transferred all my main games to a New 3DS a couple years later but I use the Luigi one for trading Pokémon and also because I purposely bought and downloaded Pokémon Blue and Silver to trade with the VC ports.
When i was 6 i mained luigi is brawl and sm4sh and in 2013 that year was so hype to me and when i was told there was gonna be another year of luigi in 2023 I was SUPER excited so every so often i always thought in the back of my mind oh hey luigi gon get a year in 2023... and he never did 😢

They did my boy wrong. That 3ds in the video was only in Europe. They released a Year of Luigi 3ds XL in the states and it wasn’t even green. It was silver and had Mario on it first and Luigi behind him. There was also a regular 3ds, but that didn’t have Luigi on it at all and it was blue. Luigi has always been overshadowed and I feel like the year of Luigi was no different. They just shoehorned him into existing games. The poster was cool. I still have mine up in my game room, but I felt very let down by the year of Luigi at the time and still feel that way.
i have fond memories of the year of luigi as even if it had a peter out end he's my favorite mario character and would love more events for nintendo characters at that point.(would really love princess daisy & pit getting a year.:3) dark moon i love for the cutscenes(especially luigi saving mario.:3)/king boo's new look but should've been structured like the 1st game(didn't find the 1st one scary that it being lighter doesn't bother me.) and should've kept the portrait ghost. new luigi u i liked the cameos but of the main games was the weakest as i think nabbit could've been someone else and was at the point i had enough of the new series just finding it lazy. really loved dream team the most as while the tutorials got a bit old at points(still find zelda games till recent worse.) and could've included more(really wish princess daisy had been included in the year of luigi as she would've been fun to see in the rpg's with how it's artist did art of her.) but luigi had so much charm and was the last mario rpg that was good to me before paper jam showed how dead paper mario was/the remakes not needing to exist(at least for superstar saga should've brought the scrapped nintendo cameos back.) when instead it could've brought mario & luigi to the switch. don't fully consider 3d world it(moreso consider it princess peach's game as with the deserved spotlight she's getting kinda is a year of princess peach.) do really love it for having other playable characters that i'm very glad is coming back.
Bro, I agree with you. Luigi Mansion Dark Moon was one of the best games I have ever played. When I heard the announcement, I was so excited. Couldn't stop talking about it to my friends. Also, my all-time favorite Mario & Luigi game is Mario and luigi Dreams Team, but I do agree that there were too many tutorials.

luigis mansion dark moon is a perfect game, minus two things. E-gadd is annoying and chilly ride is a terrible mission. Also I really don't care about portrait ghosts, i didn't grown up with the first game and didn't enjoy it when I played it. Also, mario and luigi dream team is my favourite mario and luigi game. I know its not as good as the original and bowsers inside story but I love the pillow island and the story. I just think the desert area sucks
Hey, at least Dream Team's giant battles were handled better than Bowser's Inside Story. Blowing on the DS microphone just to breathe fire was awful, especially on the Fawful Express fight, AND your microphone was most likely unresponsive at times. Hell, I'd like to believe that some people who played this game had asthma and needed to take breathers so much and so often, especially since they might now be playing on emulators, which can ALSO be very unresponsive.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is so long and I love it, but the giant battles were hard for me when I was young.

My favorit character from the Mushroom Kingdom is also Luigi, so i totally agree that it would be nice if Luigi got his own platformer game series. At least he gas the Luigi's Mantion games.

3:56 Since Dark Moon was on the 3DS, it makes more sense to make it a more linear game.
The first one eventually made it to the 3DS in 2018 and it could barely run it. Next Level Games made the right choice when doing a mission structure for 2. (Because imagine 2 in the style of 1 and 3 but running at like 7 frames per second)
There's such a thing as "poor optimization" you know. It being "mission-based" doesn't automatically mean it'd run better.
There were bigger, more "open" games that ran just fine on the original 3DS, like Ocarina of Time 3D & Majora's Mask 3D.
There's no reason the 3DS should've had such issues rendering _a few rooms and some hallways._

It was originally a _Gameboy/Gameboy Color_ game, something _also_ "from the 90's",
yet it ran into issues running smoothly at times too.

The 3DS had games that weren't designed like that, with larger environments and ran perfectly fine.
Hell, even some of the missions in Dark Moon let you wander around most, if not all, of an area without much problem.
I used _those_ examples because they were made/worked on by the same company that made LM1 for 3DS.
(But I imagine they were stretched pretty thin back then and probably didn't have enough resources to smooth things out.)
My Mom was such a BIG Nintendo Fan that she named my brother and I after the Mario Brothers. Now that my brother has kids of his own, he's doing the same thing except he's keeping the pool of naming choices wider than just Nintendo. He has 3 Sons now named Link (Legend of Zelda) Max (Goof Troop / A Goofy Movie) and Miles (Spider-Man) .

Year Of Luigi was taken about as seriously as the Movie concept of the brothers being together makes them stronger. Every one was bummed in retrospect cause nintendo did him dirty
Luigi’s mansion 2 is very near and dear to my heart. When it released I was around 4 or 5 years old and I used to always play on my brothers 3ds, he got Luigi’s mansion 2 and he said I wasn’t allowed to play it. Eventually this barrier dropped and I was allowed to play the game, and 4 year old me fell in love. I would always play that game and, for a 4 year old, I was actually pretty good. I think I even managed to beat the game on my lonesome. I have very fond memories of playing that game from when I was 5 to when I was 7 and it will always be a loved game for me. So excited for the remake on the switch, too.

Luigi has always been my most favorite character from any franchise of all time. my oldest childhood toy is a luigi figure from mario kart 64 i got from toys r us in the 90s and my most favorite toy growing up was my plush luigi from mario party 5. from what i see those plush luigi are worth near 400 a piece now.

I will always remeber the year of Luigi, because i have a homebrewed year of luigi 3ds XL, and it's really funny pointing out it isnt a mario anniversary celebration, its specifically the year of Luigi, which is neat imo
The irony is the console came with digital redeemable games... All of which were the Mario titles, granted ones that included Luigi in some way, but imagine how defeated I was getting the Luigi console, but they didn't include any of the games featured by the celebration as the preloaded games. I can't be too upset though, because the Mario titles were the latest and most popular back in 2013, and considering I was still able to claim them to my Nintendo account as recently as 2020 (my sister never redeemed them to her account I guess...?), That's was really impressive. I'm glad I did redeem them just in case, though, since the store shut down recently, which lead to the homebrewing the console. I never intend to sell it, so not like it matters.

I bought the limited edition Silver Luigi 3DS XL and I still use it. I transferred all my main games to a New 3DS a couple years later but I use the Luigi one for trading Pokémon and also because I purposely bought and downloaded Pokémon Blue and Silver to trade with the VC ports.
When i was 6 i mained luigi is brawl and sm4sh and in 2013 that year was so hype to me and when i was told there was gonna be another year of luigi in 2023 I was SUPER excited so every so often i always thought in the back of my mind oh hey luigi gon get a year in 2023... and he never did 😢

They did my boy wrong. That 3ds in the video was only in Europe. They released a Year of Luigi 3ds XL in the states and it wasn’t even green. It was silver and had Mario on it first and Luigi behind him. There was also a regular 3ds, but that didn’t have Luigi on it at all and it was blue. Luigi has always been overshadowed and I feel like the year of Luigi was no different. They just shoehorned him into existing games. The poster was cool. I still have mine up in my game room, but I felt very let down by the year of Luigi at the time and still feel that way.
This man single handedly got the Lord to bring us Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon with the power of prayer. God bless you my good man.

dark moon i love for the cutscenes(especially luigi saving mario.:3)/king boo's new look but should've been structured like the 1st game(didn't find the 1st one scary that it being lighter doesn't bother me.) and should've kept the portrait ghost.
new luigi u i liked the cameos but of the main games was the weakest as i think nabbit could've been someone else and was at the point i had enough of the new series just finding it lazy.
really loved dream team the most as while the tutorials got a bit old at points(still find zelda games till recent worse.) and could've included more(really wish princess daisy had been included in the year of luigi as she would've been fun to see in the rpg's with how it's artist did art of her.) but luigi had so much charm and was the last mario rpg that was good to me before paper jam showed how dead paper mario was/the remakes not needing to exist(at least for superstar saga should've brought the scrapped nintendo cameos back.) when instead it could've brought mario & luigi to the switch.
don't fully consider 3d world it(moreso consider it princess peach's game as with the deserved spotlight she's getting kinda is a year of princess peach.) do really love it for having other playable characters that i'm very glad is coming back.
were gonna have to wait til 50 years, my future kids will get to experience the year of Luigi once again

Bro, I agree with you. Luigi Mansion Dark Moon was one of the best games I have ever played. When I heard the announcement, I was so excited. Couldn't stop talking about it to my friends. Also, my all-time favorite Mario & Luigi game is Mario and luigi Dreams Team, but I do agree that there were too many tutorials.

Hey, at least Dream Team's giant battles were handled better than Bowser's Inside Story. Blowing on the DS microphone just to breathe fire was awful, especially on the Fawful Express fight, AND your microphone was most likely unresponsive at times. Hell, I'd like to believe that some people who played this game had asthma and needed to take breathers so much and so often, especially since they might now be playing on emulators, which can ALSO be very unresponsive.
They always keep doing my boy dirty while at the same time doing my boy well, all the same time, Luigi's mansion Dark Moon Is getting a switch remake and now it's finally gonna look just like how it did in my eyes when i was a kid, and maybe we get Luigi in Mario RPG (and maybe, JUST maybe they fix Luigi's sprites in mario maker so he isn't a green mario) would be honestly cool if we get another year of luigi, So far what we are getting when it comes to Luigi content is enough tbh, for me at least.
