The Bosch 1617 Router has been out for quite a few years now and has been a solid performer the entire time. When you look at routers, there are two brands that come up quite a bit and have some loyal followers. There is Bosch and Porter Cable. At least those are the two that I have been looking at for a few years now.
The main reason that I really like this 1617 router is it is about as universal of a router that you can get. It works as a stationary base router, you can get a plunge kit for it, plus it works with most router lifts.
If you are new to routing, or want to get started, there are somethings you need to think about before you jump into it. I unfortunately did not know what I needed to think about when I started, so I have made some poor choices in my past. Now I feel that I have reached routing nirvana.

Best bang for the buck is to just get 2 1617's, one plunge and 1 fixed. The depth adjustment is the best that I've found. Those twist collar ones are maddening when trying to adjust from under a table. Setup is everything and if something is a pain to setup, it can take all the joy out of woodworking.
I bought the plunge, got the Bosch router table and have since added a bunch of accessories for it. It became a hassle to remove it from the table to use for plunge routing, which my trim router cannot do, so I bought another 1617 with just the fixed base to keep in the table.
Tools that are a hassle to use are tools that do not get used.

This video is far above average. Video quality is excellent, you are easy to understand, you are direct and to the point, and you obviously know what you are talking about. I know zero about routers. My son just bought the Bosch 1617 so I decide to see what the excitement was . Hell, I may get one now!

I'm used to larger, corded routers czcams.com/users/postUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

This is an excellent learning video. Your discussion of things to consider when buying a router covered a lot of the same issues I had been thinking about, with the exception that your patient and thorough approach made things become clear. I'm ready to stop overthinking the process and just buy myself a Bosch 1617.

May 4, 2022. Thanks for a great video. I have the Bosch 1617 as well and it's a love/hate relationship. Sometimes I want to throw it in the nearest dumpster. I watched how easily you put the router into the fixed base and then removed it again. I have spent as much as 45 minutes just trying to get it into the fixed base and it's just as hard to remove it. I'm lining everything up properly and loosening the clamp and pushing in the lever. It feels like I need at least 3 hands. Today I finally adjusted the nut on the big clamp and now I can get the router into the base without too much trouble, but it's been a huge frustration. And yes, I've managed to scratch up the sides of the router in the process, which doesn't make things any easier. I worked on the scratches today with steel wool and that helped a little. I also have the Bosch table RA1181, I think, and I like that too, but I have just as much trouble getting the router into and out of fixed base when it's attached to the table. Okay, I'm done venting.

Thanks very much. This is very useful information and was well presented. I've been using my Dad's 3/4HP Craftsman router that he probably bought in the '50s. It's served me well for the occasional routing I've done over the years, but the lack of a find adjustment and lack of soft-start have annoyed me for a long time. I want to replace it with another solid machine that will keep me in good stead for years as this one has, while keeping the size and weight down and satisfies the two deficiencies of of the Craftsman. It looks to me like the 1617 will do the trick. I also like the fact that I can get the plunge base later if I decide I need it. I have several other Bosch tools and have always been impressed by their design and build quality.

Well I just bought the 1617 Bosch and it’s going in my just table. I just finished building my table and I’m a lot like you, I had mismatched equipment that I was using and now I’ll have a more convenient setup. I have the Jessem lift and I’m looking forward to this new routers ability. I do have an equal number of quarter inch and half inch bits so I was in need of a router with the ability to slow down some of those larger diameter bits. Keep up the video production!

This is way better than the DeWalt routers. (And I'm a DeWalt fan.)
Personally, the only DeWalt router I like is the 600b (? I think that's the model lol) the cordless 20v. But that's just for smaller stuff since it gets a bit wonky on bigger bits.
But for the best value in any corded router, the Bosch 1617evspk is amazing. They're tougher than any other router under $400. And having the plunge, and fixed base will give you a lot of versatility.

Excellent info here... I'm in the research phase currently for my 1st router purchase. It didn't take me long to realize the Bosch 1617 EVS with or without the plunge kit is a very fine router based on numerous reviews I have read... The Bosch router table RA-1181 is a mixed bag as to what I might end up with by the time it gets delivered to me or the big box store. I may just build my own table at the end of my Delta contractors table saw in all eventualities, however I'm a big fan of Rockler wood working products & I will take a closer look at the plate U are illustrating here & perhaps build it into my own 3/4" plywood bench top to the right of my saw's fence & modify that fence to also use it on the router side. The T - handle height adjuster looks super user friendly & surely must add to the enjoyable experience of using a tabletop mounted router.
Thanks for sharing your experience with routers as I found it quite helpful.

I eventually figured out what I needed, and that was the Porter Cable model similar to your Bosch with both fixed and plunge bases... but I picked up another fixed router for a router table and a palm router... I find myself taking one hand off the handle to turn the unit off, which can be a bit hazardous, it's not a light unit. I plan on putting this unit into a router table. Thanks.

One thing I like about the 1617 is that Bosch makes a dedicated under-mount table base for it. About $60 for that, but it'd be better than using your fixed handle base as a table base, because it'd save you attaching and removing and attaching...and removing ad nauseaum.

I bought this make and model of router with both of its interchangeable bases used on Ebay, with the intention to install it into a custom build router table. Naturally, I want to use this router to cut out the insert into the table top to accept the router lift, but I've run into a problem when I tried to use the fixed base.
The router motor can be switched on when it is positioned upside down (like when it is installed in a router table for instance), but when it is right-side up (either naked or in the fixed base), it won't switch on. If I place it upside down on a table and switch it on, and then rotate it, it switches off once it gets to a horizontal position. It will switch on when it's installed in the plunge base however. It's like the fixed base is somehow activating a switch that detects when the router is being tipped over, sort of like the failsafe switch on a space heater that cuts the power when it is tipped over.
In other words, it seems impossible to use the fixed base. Has anybody encountered this problem before? I can still use the plunge base to cut out the insert, but I thought that was very odd.

Nice video, thanks. Bought the router with plunger and a Bosch table today. I like the Rockler table but it was a $$$ thing.

You just talked me into buying this router! Thank you! I can't afford a router lift though, so i'll just mount it on a 3/8" thick plate and rely on the micro adjustment to lift and lower the bit using the T-shaped hex screw. I hope it's as easy as it seems to be and no complications along the way. BTW I'm new into routing, specially building and using my own DIY router table. Any advice will be highly appreciated. Wish me luck!

VERY good explanation of what to consider. I recently got the 1716 combo and love it, and then last week bought the Bosch table, which (for me) was a beast to assemble. But it's up and now I'm learning the techniques to raise the router, change the bit, etc. Your video was quite helpful. I'm subscribing!

great review... I think you did a great job but there is a tiny problem I think you should of addressed and that is the plunge base kit of the 1617 .... I bought it and I had to send it back because of the plunge base .... as a machine I think it's the best that is between all these who has the same power level but as a plunge I think it's horrible and that's your they came up with new mrc23evsk 2.3 hp .... 1617 would be the best as a fixed base router or a table router and would recommend it for the tram and I think it would be a great idea to get mrc23evsk as a plunge router .... thank you for your review and u think you hit the spot .... bosch is the best that is for everyone... thanks again

Great explanation of the Bosch system. I will be getting a router for the 1st time and I was immediately drawn into this Bosch model and your explanation of the system helps a lot. Does anyone know where to get that work table?

On that third cabinet door, it is hard to look because you should have made the two sides symmetrical. The rest is ok, but I'd like to see the drills facing the walls, easier to grab is all.

Just bought a POF 1200AE Router but found no mention of a Table or Accessories in the instructions. I wanted that! Product is fine and I am new to this. I will follow it up but they should have mentioned it in the booklet.

I have the same Bosch router and have had it for years but did not know how to use it properly. I also have a Rigid trim router and a cordless Dewalt, which I use extensively . However now So now I am beginning to use my Bosch on my benchdog router table. I am starting to make cabinet doors and I just bought some Grizzly bits. My question is on the raised panel bit which is about 3 1/2 " I need to know what speed I should use. Also I was struggling changing the bits on my table and now I just saw how you can pull the router out from the mounting and it makes it much easier to change the bits for faster set up. That just made my day. Thanks for the video.
