This is so great. I had been avoiding using my router because the clip was always failing. My solution was to drill a small hole and replace the c clip with a cotter pin.
Your way is so much easier. But it did make me feel like a bonehead for not thinking of it myself. I rember being smarter than I am now😊.

The other thing I learned from this journey of making the router work again is I had to really pay more attention to how the macro vs micro adjustment works. Because otherwise it's just going to happen again even WITH the stop collar on it.
While a traditional $$$ lift has 3 or 4 long vertical struts and you move the router up and down along those struts, this base has a different approach for a reasonable compromise. There are 3 large stops along the router. Think of them as high (router is pretty high up), low (router is pretty low), and medium (in between). Those three stops give you a range of maybe 1" or so up and down and you fine tune the router in that range with the little knob under the table or allen key through the router plate. When the router bottoms out or tops out in that range, you can easily unseat the retaining clip by forcing it by turning the allen key hard. So... as you raise/lower the router, pay attention where the hard stop is in that range. If you hit the top/bottom, bring it a little more towards the middle of that range and then use the push button release to raise the entire router up or down to next one of the three large grain stops. And THEN you can use the fine tuning to get it where you want. Once I figured that out, it was smooth sailing. It's just not obvious out of the box.

Thanks so much for this. I had actually lost my clip when it had failed. After seeing this video, I ultimately installed a collet from one of my never-used countersink bits in one of my bit sets and tightened it hard enough to hold the rod in place. Finding another spring clip has proven to be extremely difficult, although someone else in the comments mentioned using a cotter pin, which sounds like a pretty good idea to help take the load off the collet.

Thanks for posting this for others to see. I had to make the same 'fix' a few years ago when my Bosch router failed like this. It's quite a common failure and surprised the product design wasn't tested more thoroughly by Bosch, who you'd think would want to preserve their reputation for quality.

Awesome hack. I would consider putting a small flat on the shank with a file for the set screw to sit on. With some locktite, it would be going anywhere.

Thank you for this video. I have replaced the spring clip 3 times on the router base attached to the underside of my Kreg router table insert.. Now that I have the drill bit collar in place, I hope that I will not have to replace any more spring clips.

I ordered a 1617 EVS from Amazon and it arrived today. I am planning on mounting it in a table. I had a collar from a 1/4 in bit and put it on as a preventative for future problems. Better to be proactive than reactive. Thanks for doing the research

I was on the fence between the Dewalt and Bosch router. I bought the Bosch and this failed right out of the box. Thanks for the fix! It will save the tool but I'm definitely never buying Bosch again!

Yup. Ran into this issue with new BOSCH 1617EVS few days ago. Spring clip came completely off. Luckily, purely by happenstance, I spotted it laying on the floor and was able to put it back on the height adjustment rod. I'll make permanent fix soon. Thanks for the fix idea.
In my case the cause of the clip coming off was the fixed base galling the motor, causing it to bind when adjusting the height. Had to file and sand off the galling to stop the binding. Think the sliding surfaces in the base have/had burs that caused the galling.
Not the level of quality I expected from BOSCH. Sad.

I just bought this router, I have the same issue, frustrating. We shouldn't be buying extra parts. Bosch should be taking care of this issue. I tried different ways to fix it, so now i have to buy drill bit collar. It really sucks. But thanks for the tip.

The C-clip can probably be eliminated as long as a drill bit collar is installed in its place. I kept the c clip in place as a means of placing the collar in the correct location on the rod.

Thanks a lot for sharing. Just ran into this yesterday. I've installed it in my bench dog extension and I also bought a dust kit. The kit took some modification to get the hose connected to vacuum. HOWEVER it still dumps dust. I think because of the other unused holes in the base. Have you run into this?

I would guess the dust collection is about 80-85% effective in my setup. There is definitely dust dropping below the router and table. I attribute it to gravity negating some of the shop vac’s effectiveness in collecting saw dust.
That’s pretty good compared to many of my other tools.

I know this is settled but I was just thinking of another fix. What about a piece of wire (with a little grease on it) wrapped into the little slot and twisted really well with needlenose pliers? I would guess maybe 18 gauge would work. Just a thought.

I bought one of these routers last November. One day after the return period from Amazon expired it died. Sent it in for warranty service, got it back and it worked for 5 minutes. After sending it in again it worked for another 1 minute. Bosch wanted to "fix" it a third time but after going through a couple supervisors and a 4 week delay they finally replaced it. New one seems ok, but the warranty service center is a joke.
Wow, sorry to hear you got such poor service from Bosch. My router has not had any issues yet… other than the retaining clip.
I've had my 1617 for years, maybe decades. Actually never had a situation where this was or could be an issue. BUT it won't be an issue now! Thanks!

Hey Pete! My Bosch RA1181 and 1617EVS arrive this coming Monday. Question: Would purchasing the BOSCH RA1165 Under-Table Router Base prevent this? On second thought, I'll purchase the stop collars instead. Thanks!
I think you're on the right track sticking with the 1617EVS and adding the stop collar.
I believe the RA1165 is identical to the base that comes with the 1617EVS (less the wood handles). The Lifting / Height Adjust mechanism is the exact same and will probably have same issue with the snap ring.

Did you contact Bosch about this? Maybe they have a fix, or maybe you got a bad retaining clip. This is one of the most popular routers on the market, so maybe you just got one with a bad part, or maybe it was stressed one too many times. BTW I love your solution to the problem. If it is a design flaw, I will use your solution, as I just ordered this router.
Happened to me first use. It is a poor design.
nah this retaining clip bends like a paper clip. not even exaggerating
also the kit that comes with a plunge base has a common issue as well. when you plunge it sticks and wont move. slowly you put a bit more
weight on it and finally plunge but very forcefully. was like that since day 1 so i still havent been brave or stupid enough to test it out in application. id imagine theres something you could lubricate or loosen to fix the issue but i dont need a plunge router too often. anyways my advice is look for the next best model instead. or get a makita. every person ive met seems very happy with them
If anyone has the Bosch RA1165 under table router base, (instead of using the fixed base from the router), the fix in the video will work for that as well.

Are you talking about removal of the 1/2 inch collet to replace with 1/4 inch?
That’s quite easy. Just loosen the collet nut until its completely unscrewed and then lift off the shaft. 1/4 inch collet can then be screwed directly onto routers shaft. Hope that helped

Does anybody elses router slip when adjusting a bit up while in a table? There are three positive stop points but mine will slip out of them when adjusting up under the weight of the router itself and fall all the way down. It so frustrating

Pretty disappointing that this router has been out for many years and in all that time BOSCH has not stepped up to fix this design flaw that renders the micro adjustment unusable.
At the very least they should ship a collar with instructions to install.

It’s a little thing but you could easily not perpetuate the common error of using it’s as a possessive when it’s clearly not.

I just keep the Bosch in the plunge base, and use my Porter Cable for fixed base because its adjustment is far superior to the Bosch

So disappointed in this horrible design flaw. You'd think after paying hundreds of dollars for a router, bits, and table that the failure point wouldn't be a metal clip.
That said is the shaft 1/4" or is it 6mm? I just don't want another delay before I start my project if I order the wrong one.😂😂😂
I used a 1/4” collar. It fit very well.
