I play this song, because today I said goodbye to a friend. He died at the age of 36. Although he was young during most of the Dead's days, he saw the last concert, on Jerry's birthday before Jerry died. The laid him out today in the shirt he would have wanted to wear....of course, a dead shirt. If anyone reads this, keep my friend in mind, because he was a true Deadhead. RIP Steve.

Hi mama, your story reminds me of mine. When my grandson was just a babe and wouldn't fall asleep,I would put him in his stroller and walk around the neighborhood singing this song to him...soft,sweet,and full of love. He doesn't remember but I will never forget.

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
    It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
    Perhaps they're better left unsung
    I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air
    Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
    Nor wind to blow
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men
There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone
You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home
Songwriters: GARCIA, JEROME J. / HUNTER, ROBERT C.

Last heard of, ripples of sound waves of this song had reached a galaxy far, far away and still travelling at the speed of light. Sound travelling at the speed of light! It is perhaps seeking out Jerry somewhere out there, scattering pleasure on the way, all the way.

    • @CorrieBergeron
      @CorrieBergeron Před 7 lety +2

      A lovely sentiment.
However, the signal of this song has only traveled 36 light years. The first radio signal has gone 100 light years. While there are quite a few in that volume, on the scale of the galaxy, that's hardly even noticeable.
      Space is Big. Really Big.

To go to a Dead concert was to be transported to another dimension. It was a dimension of musical mastery. The Dead would transport you on their music. They start out playing a song like Uncle John's Band and go off on a 20-30 minute jam and then at the end of the song you realize what happened and all you can do is just think "WOW THAT WAS AWESOME." And then they do it again and again and again.....

I had a boss who was obsessed, dropped out of school to follow them and so he would play them constantly and I really just never understood it. You know what made the Dead great, above all other things? They loved what they did. They may not have been the best musicians, and they certainly had their good and bad years. But if you, as a listener, place any value on soul and emotion, the Dead provided. Jerry and Bob lived what they sang. They meant every word of every song.

It's just the best song ever written, perfect for calming children or college students who have overdosed on psychedelic drugs. I have been both. "If I knew the way, I would take you home." I'll always take that line with me.

The day Jerry Garcia passed was a day of true loss of a great and talented man. As long as the Dead keep playing we will be there:)

It makes me little teary-eyed myself. This soulful man always made me smile when
I saw him sing. Even when it was a sad song. I miss him. I put on a CD these days and it still makes me smile. I'm thankful for that! But it's not quite the same smile. RIP, dear friend. I'm gonna put "Europe '72" on right now. Thanks for listening to a sentimental old man. Gotta put that cd on now. BYE
