- Hi everyone welcome back to my CZcams channel. In this video, I'm working on getting a few abstract paintings completed for an Art gallery order here in Toronto. I discuss a bit about my abstract painting process and the trials and tribulations that come with being a fine artist.
I'm working on all acrylic paintings on canvas with Golden and Liquitex paints. My tools are regular cheap paint brushes and a Messermeister Silicone Bowl scrapper. I have them in a few different sizes. They are great to push paint around the canvas and are really easy tools to clean up when you are finished painting.

Thanks so much. I wish I had some earlier one to talk about the struggles us arts go through. It's not always easy and it can be frustrating. But there are those moments when you feel like the painting just painted itself and it's almost magical!!! I live for those days. Hang in there :)

It helped me a lot to hear you talk about doubt creeping in, frustration, and losing your groove, and just working through it. I love watching your process and hearing you share the truth of your experience, the self doubt, about when things "go wrong." It's really refreshing to hear someone tell it like it is. In this video, when you were saying "here is where the self-doubt set in" was the exact moment when the blue you were adding to that painting just made it suddenly magical! It's what I absolutely love about abstract painting. No matter that I am a mere amateur, really new to abstracts, and my composition always seems to suck (I know - it takes practice to get there and get a feel for what works!), when I let go of expectation and let myself play, there are magical moments, aha's when something works, and I learn something new. It is really playful and fun and therapeutic.

Hi Lori. So glad to find your channel and watch this video. I’m on the brink of giving up as I constantly am thinking I’m not good enough. My art is rubbish and I don’t understand it. I start a painting and think it’s not good, so I put it in a bonfire. It’s going on pretty much in the middle of painting, that things just go absolutely wrong. When I’m kind to myself, I often just leave it and never look at it for months. Strangely though, it doesn’t look really that bad when I come back to it with fresh kind eyes. I guess you’re right. I don’t have to be so hard on myself. My husband keeps reminding me, the most important thing is for me to create, doesn’t matter it sells or not. The creating and creative process is the art itself. I’m so thankful for his encouragement and support, as much as I appreciate your honesty in creating this video. All the best to you. -E.J., Waikato, New Zealand.

Evi Julie: How's it going now? That happens to me all the time! Not the bonfire tho :) My bh is like yours & keeps me grounded, in art and in life! I keep all my old !#*t because it is SO motivating to go back see how far I've come in 3 years. Painting is like golfing, you don't play to beat someone else, you just try to beat your own score. It helps very much to keep those "kind eyes" around, they tell a better truth. Every painting of mine goes through an ugly stage & then starts to get way better, and then.....I have a REALLY hard time editing my "little darlings" to actually FINISH the work, a lot of them stay in that stage & wait for my "smart eyes" to show up. Sometimes they do & sometimes they don't. Mostly I just start another one, I happen to excel at procrastination :D

I love your honesty. Reminds me that I am not alone. I can't imagine anything that compares to the experience of the creative process through completion. Expressing the emotions and thoughts involved can be at times difficult to put into words. The final piece will hopeful do that for the artist. Thank you for sharing and connecting your experience. Lori...I can relate to what you say about finding that “sweet spot” when you paint...listening to music. I don’t paint like you do, I do much smaller pieces....but I have felt the “off in another world with everything humming in your brain” feeling and then “voila’!” everything just works! Hi Lori, I so emphatically agree about the importance of building a layered 'history' into each piece I create. I find that putting yourself into your work by underpainting layer upon layer really solidifies the work, it puts me into my piece & creates a consistency like nothing else. I am mostly commenting to help you build your channel & support you in that as I really appreciate you even taking the time to start the channel. I particularly enjoy all the talking as it's like a visit with a friend that I don't get often enough. You'll probably be hearing from me a lot! You be you dear girl... I'm enjoying all of it. Hi, thanks for posting this ( I. know im late to the game). I would have never considered doing abstract art 5 years ago. I primarily am a graphite//drawing artist //illustrator, and also use things like adobe for illustration...but there is something really beautiful and calming about just getting in touch with making marks on the paper or canvas without any particular desired effect...the last couple years I have been learning and pushing hard to become a better artist, but I have found that doing abstract art is extremely calming.

Thank you so much for sharing this experience Lori! I have experienced it so many times to ovredo a painting which was good in the beginning and then it got too many "adds-on" and lost the soul ;-) In the end I was furstrated that I spoilt it..
Of cource you can amend and everyone has got a unique taste in the end. I have enjoyed your painting process and loved your very first painting a bit time, wehen you sparkled up the maginficent white-gray-balack background - with reds and other vivid colors. That would be it for my taste. The white touch was huge and cast the true mist over the picture. But in the end it has evolved to the beautiful "ice palast" with the spring color touch :-D Love your sharing this process of creation! So true and wonderful!

Thank you this was such a help.I have trouble and give up too easily a lot of self doubt. I go from writing children’s stores to surreal collage to fantasy drawing the watercolour oil acrylic- driving me nuts. I believe I have to stick at something to b good at it. You give me the feeling of hope, thank you.
Yes you really do have to stick with something in order to get to that place where you were excelling, so it’s determination, practice and at least 20 hours a week you should be spending on trying to work on your craft whatever that maybe. Thanks so much for the comment and for watching.

Lori, I've been going back over your videos and watching the ones I haven't seen yet, and I just have to tell you that I landed on this one just when I needed to see it. I have nine paintings on the go right now and each one is in that awkward, ugly stage. I'm alone while I work (I'm a Toronto artist too) and sometimes get down on myself. Thanks for the reminder to be kind to myself (and I think I'll take a break now and go enjoy that sunshine for a bit) I love your videos-you are open and honest and share your knowledge so freely. So I have a few favorite parts of this Lori. First I love seeing you dancing cause it makes me wonder what music you listening to. (I don't think it's classical, although that helps me sometime:)). I also like the part you were talking about self doubts as a painter. I told you in previous comments how much I love your art and I think you're an incredible painter but you're also real and honest with your paintings and sharing such information is valuable to a new painter like myself. Sometimes I work a piece so much that i have to walk away from it, and that voice that tells you, are you a real painter? Do you even know what you're doing? But at the end of the day, I have to trust the process and know that everything if needed can be painted over (Although I don't want to be much of an option but it's good to know it's there) Anyway, I love watching you paint. I told you, it's a great way for me to start my day and your narrative with watching you, feels real and inspiring.
Thanks so much!! I really do appreciate it. I still have those days all the time and I'm quite hard on myself when I don't have a good painting day. These are all the things I wish other artists would talk about more often. I thought I was the only one that felt this way and that just made me have more self doubt. When I started to open up this dialogue more and more artist were willing to express that it's a process that they go through too. I can't tell you how much better I feel now that I know this is normal... lol

What you said about doubt and thinking “have I just created my last good painting?” Reminded me It’s like many actors…”Have I just had my last role?” I know for sure it’s not true for you. 👍

Thank you for posting this Lori. Fantastic to see your layering process. You make it look so easy! I love the way adding the white at the end really makes the other colours stand out. Two questions please:
Could you tell me if you’re using a brush here, or some other tool?
Also, could you do a video on how you choose which colours layer well? In other words, is layering a random choice of colours or is the sequence planned?
Thank you so much Shelia... I'm using a brush and a silicone squeegee. I'm a true intuitive painter so my layers are decided in the moment. It would be really hard for me to break that down as to what layers work well. The thing with abstract painting, it's about trial and error and practice practice practice. It's truly the best way to learn how to layer and what colours work together. As soon as my big commission is completed and I'm caught up on my other commissions I will be doing some online tutorials. I'm sure you will fine them helpful. 😊

Thank for sharing this video, I can relate to so much of what you said. I also, do better work with music. It's my little escape. Maybe one day I can sell some. I also repaint over older paintings. I get some canvases at the thrift store and add to it or totally change the whole picture. Very therapeutic. Thank you for your inspiring videos!

Before you start a canvas do you chose the colour palette or do you just start with a colour and add whatever you feel is right?

You are my idol. And I'm 80 so that's hard to do. Do you use gesso or white paint when you put a layer of white on?
oh thats so nice thank you!! and no it's not gesso. It's a mixture that i create with titanium white as the base.

Great question, in the past most of them came from doing art shows throughout the year. However over the past year, almost all of them are coming from social media and google (organically).

What kind of music do you listen to while painting? Do you find that song lyrics influence how you paint?
I would say more the beat of the music influences. I have never been one to listen to the words of music. It's the sound of the voices and the beat the grabs more.

OMG! I listen to “true crime” at bedtime too. 🛌 I listen to it often as I’m going to sleep or as I do my bedtime routine 😴 I use a timer, but have occasionally forgotten the timer and woken up 2 hours later...once a I started dreaming about someone stalking me...not good.) I think it’s probably a bad habit, but most of the time, it doesn’t bother me and actually find it weirdly cathartic...maybe because there’s a clear “good & evil” line that’s always there, plus the “psychological profile” of the killers is fascinating to me. I will say, however, I don’t recommend reading “ The Stranger Beside Me,” about Ted Bundy, before attempting to nod off. No, not a good choice. 😱One of my fave TC podcasts of late is “Morbid.” Ash & Angela, two close girlfriends (and cousins I think?) review select TC stories. They don’t do any journalistic investigations or anything, but they do read all the media reports and comment and give the quirky “keeping it weird” analyses of these awful stories. The difference here is that they put their often humorous spin on the how, what & why and “WTF’s” of these mostly murder cases (FYI: full of expletives.) They are NOT laughing about the crimes or victims, because these are are not funny. They give deep respect for the victims and their families who have suffered so much in the terrible and senseless loss of their loved ones.
yesssss I love my true crime podcast just before bed. I know it's brutal but I'm true crime anything....movies, HLN, Court TV, podcast etc etc. I love trying to understand why people do the things they do or become who they are. The human mind is fascinating. . ..I'll have to check that one out..Thanks for tip.

Lori, what brand of paint are the larger bottles? Not Golden is it? Do you order your paints? is so, from where? Thank you @1:45 you put a new canvas up. The right side that has a roundish look, turn that side as the top/up. Looks like a person figure.

You don't have to understand abstract art. It's non representational. It's more about feelings and the technical components of putting together a serious of marks to make a composition work without having any reference to draw from.
I know I like a piece of abstract art when it lights me up. I feel uplifted somehow and enjoy exploring the juxtaposition of color and shape and line. Abstract art is about the choices an artist makes and whether they can keep your interest and make you feel something-good or bad, it doesn’t matter. But I like the ones that make me feel good. 🥰
Would really appreciate a tutorial from the very start ….. not after the first layer …. Could you please slow it down 😮 not learning your process at all 😢

Painting colour patches on s canvas and creating a mess is not really a process or involves much talent!
Really??? you are welcome anytime to come to my studio and show me your painting skills and You should do a little research before you make a silly comment like that.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist what would make think I haven't already researched? And what would make you think I don't have a natural talent to paint. I find abstract expressionism a cop out for the challenge of producing paintings to high standard.
I believe anyone can paint a Pollock or a Herring, but not everyone can paint a Caravaggio or Turner... Even better still combined with a touch of abstract expressionism!
your comment on that fact that anyone can paint abstracts clearly shows me that your knowledge on painting is minimal and you have a narrow view point for art. Abstracts are extremely complicated to create. A Pollock to you make look simple but what you are forgetting is he came up with idea...before that drip paintings didn't exist. what I find to be a cop out is someone that posts negative comments to someone when there is no proof they themselves can do it better. So anytime you want to send me your website or the galleries you are represented feel free😊
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist well youll have to wait awhile before you can see my artwork as it takes time time to produce each piece. It's not like flicking paint here and there and saying 'do I like it?' or 'dont I like it?'.
Pollock's work was first mocked in Life magazine which brought about his fame, but it was the start of abstract movement. The talentless point has be proven so now we have people flicking paint on canvas willy Nilly and calling themselves artist.
It's funny because talented writers don't face the same problem. They don't have talentless writers with bad grammar saying 'this is a novel I created in a day!' it must be better than Steven King 3months to produce piece.
If flicking paint works for you then carry on but it lacks depth of the artist and talent... Bit like the alcoholic J Pollock. America has never produced any great artist of high standard!
Plus, they get all defensive the moment they receive any criticism!
I’m not defensive just pointing out your narrow view point on what you think art is as well as your lack of knowledge on how complicated creating abstract art is. It’s really easy is to give negative Criticism when you lack knowledge. Anybody can say abstract artist’s lack talent that’s easy!!! 🤣 it’s a lot harder to actually make a full time career from being a painter and an abstract artist at the.
What time do you need to show me your work??? If it’s as easy as flinging paint you should have a body of work ready to show me by tomorrow. 🤣🤣🤣
I am interested in art, so this channel pops up now and then. I really must say that this channel is excruciatingly painful to me, mostly because I take abstract art (all art, in fact) seriously, yet I see not a hint of serious artistic work or effort here. I have known many artists, and of course have studied all the really best artists' work all my life --- and I have never, I mean NEVER, seen art treated so carelessly, crudely, and haphazardly. This leads me to only one conclusion: that this artist does not understand painting or abstract art at all, and has no clue how to proceed except to randomly just slap more paint on, willy-nilly, and keep mushing it around. I do not believe all art videos on youtube deserve praise, compliments, and support. Sometimes maybe an educated truthful assessment is called for. As for a meaningful suggestion to this artist, I would suggest to stop painting and spend a few years studying art history, visiting museums, then maybe a few years in good studio drawing class, and time spent reading and really trying to understand the purposes of great past art and how difficult those artists' challenges were. There is much more to it than just "coloring in" a canvas.
How about stop trying to be a CZcams critic and come out and see my art in person at my next art exhibit. I’ll be showing in Toronto next week and then I’ll be in New York and Austin texas in May. You can find all the details of my exhibitions on my website.

@@lorimirabelliabstractartist Very funny. The word is "critique" or "criticize". And I really do offer expert opinions. I have substantial credentials which do not need to be listed here because this is not about me. It is more about your flippancy and disinterest in accepting good guidance. Probably my most useful piece of advice would be to stop making youtube videos. There is no benefit in subjecting the public to these paintings and practices.
