I am so sick, lying in bed barely able to move. This is just what i need. 9 out of 10 doctors recommend Kid Creole and the Coconuts for a hasty recovery.
This is not a concert, it’s a theatrical performance. Kid Creole oozes style and charisma. Coati Mundi the wacky eccentric sidekick and then we have the delicious coconuts, backed up by horn players and percussionists. I’ve still got the vinyl albums ‘off the coast of me’ ‘Fresh fruit in foreign places’ and ‘tropical gangsters’. KC epitomised coolness and hip. A unique style paying homage to such artists as Cab Calloway et al. Timeless!!
Fantastic! I've always loved the band & I saw them twice in London in the early 80's when they were at the height of their career. I went with my best girlfriend who is only 5ft 2ins so I had to put her up on my shoulders so she could see what was going on. I was 22/23 & fit enough to handle her & we had a brilliant time, dancing away. Great memories. They really put on a brilliant show when they toured here, it wasn't just a concert. The music still stands up today in 2023. I've always thought that Caro Emerald could do some great covers of some of their songs. If you don't know of her & like this style of music you really must check her out. I missed this on tv & don't remember ever hearing about it but this is a fantastic watch so thank you so much for putting it together. August Darnell is such a talented man. From his early work on Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band including 'Cherchez la femmes' & the Machine albums including the disco hit 'There but for the grace of god go I '....he was a busy man. Then of course all the years as Kid Creole & the coconuts. He also helped Cory Daye after she went solo from Dr Buzzards band to sing with Don Armando's 2nd Avenue Rhumba band. They created a great album with 'Pow Wow', 'Deputy Of Love' & 'I'm an Indian too' as the hit single releases. Not forgetting Coati Mundi's solo stuff as well, then there's Elbow Bones & the Racketeers who had a hit with the brilliant 'Night in New York'. I've probably left loads out but his extensive work on so many projects really has to be recognised & applauded.
Amen Brother. Sometimes Some of us just don't know (ain't quite Hip?) what's really good for us, right? Some got Good Stuff Sloshing between the Ears:-)
Cheryl for me was the best moreso as she sang alot of lyrics with the Kidd oh and she was the fittest lol...real estate agent now in maryland USA good for her... Brilliant days sadly gone
Man. I really didn't really appreciate or understand Kid Creole and The Coconuts until around 1985-86 range. They weren't funky like Rick James or Prince. Wasn't pop like Michael Jackson. Wasn't new wave like the B52s. But once I really got into Kid Creole, I really appreciated their music and style.
What a simply fabulous blast from the past. I still to this day have the Kid and crew on my playlist. And bonus points for the inclusion of the classic Top of the Pops rendition of Annie, l''m Not Your Daddy.
"By the Grace of God Go I"...it's too bad as the band got older they excised that song from their concerts, it was one of their best. Thanks for posting this, it was a good show.
By the Grace of God was KC&C first single. It didn't make it. But since i visited most of their concerts and own about all their Albums, Video's etc etc i think it belongs to their best songs. ( I also like Mr. Softee :-) ) They mostly perform it in their current concerts. By the way this is a really excellent show. I would like to get a copy of the Original in the best quality possible. Indeed a lot of old tapes, which are starting to get bad...
Thank you for sharing this! I remember seeing it on TV in the about 25 years ago and I taped it. The VCR tapes are long gone, so I'm really happy to see this once more. They're such a great group, always fun and very interesting with their presentation and music. Thanks again!!
I remember watching this the night it was broadcast. I had never heard of them before and was only watching because there was nothing better on the other channels. I was totally transfixed by it. An amazing performance and this is the first time I have seen it again in over 30 years. Thank you for uploading. Happy memories indeed!
Wow - exactly what I was thinking. Pirated the sound track onto TAPE and never stopped listening to it. Lost my VHS copy years ago so am so pleased to have found again! Many of the versions of the songs are better than the studio versions. It just absolutely ROCKS!
Me too I remember recording it and I couldnt wait for my wife to come home so I could show her. Utterley brilliant and we watched them live twice after that.
Never disputed that! She was not a coconut when they performed for Granada in 1982! This is why I said "Weren't they the most gorgeous Coconuts? " Got it?
I liked the 1986 version (see the "Paris" concert on CZcams) - Kid's wife/ex-wife was still leading them and there was a couple of gorgeous blondes, one of them Swedish.
Many thanks for this! It was a favourite in the house I shared (we always skipped the interview using the cable-connected 'remote' control). Saw them live in Sheffield in 1982.
Great to see and hear this performance, it's vundabar. very bad editing though and editing is central to what you bring here noddy. And as it's said elsewhere in the comments, it would have been great to hear the interview portions too.

This group is the ultimate group of entertainers and educators!
I remember watching this the night it aired! I was 10. My Dad and family loved it. We Recorded it on our VCR. Happy memories

August Darnell said he met Cab Calloway and Cab couldn't understand why anyone would still want to wear a zoot suit
Absolutely brilliant. The orchestration & the Coconuts choreography for this track was just spot on.
I could not have said better
Growing up in NYC in the 80s, how did I miss "Kid" and his beautiful coconuts??? Virgin santisima!
This performance is nuts and the Camerawork is perfect.
Hands down THE best version of Gina Gina, too!
Great production plus they're playing live. ... Great version of I'm a Wonderful Thing. ...
Had this on video in the 80s - Played it to death; now I've found it again!

Cheryl is awesome! Loved her as a kid! The original coconuts were the BEST! Cheryl, Taryn and Adriana! None of the others matched these ladies!
oh . . .yessss . .
👍
I agree too lisa)))))
Hey Lisa you have great taste! Happy to meet Cheryl’s 2nd biggest fan 😃
Cheryl for me was the best moreso as she sang alot of lyrics with the Kidd oh and she was the fittest lol...real estate agent now in maryland USA good for her... Brilliant days sadly gone
Carol Coleman on bass Sublime bassist indeed
Saw them live at Rock city Nottingham in 82 doing most of this set. They were absolutely brilliant..

I loooove Coati Mundi's performance around 7 minutes in… His rap in Me No Pop I is one of the best raps from the whoooole of the last century
What a simply fabulous blast from the past.
I still to this day have the Kid and crew on my playlist.
And bonus points for the inclusion of the classic Top of the Pops rendition of Annie, l''m Not Your Daddy.
Their music has so much swag
Fabulous, 'Wonderful Thing' just rocks it here!!
"I got appointments in the morning, I need at least 11 hours of sleep" - I can relate!
Cheryl is so friggin’ hot! Even dressed in drag she is SMOKIN’. She truly is a wonderful thing!
Absolutely priceless, to this day!
Loved these guys in the 70s, 80s, 90s.. Glad to see they're still thriving and Mr Browders songs stay alive on Netflix. Genius!
Excellent groupe frais et entrainant
Watched on the TV all those ago been a fan of the Kid and the gang every since EXCELLENT

Genius in every way! We crave this music today!

Same here, think I wore the VHS out watching on repeat
Thank you for posting this superb video. The Coconuts are gorgeous, sexy and wonderful dancers. The band is brilliant.
the Coconuts, Taryn Haegy, Cheryl Lee poirier, Adriana Kaegi who also did the Choreography and Costuems.
I caught them 3 times back in the day all over NYC ❤❤❤🎉
Weren't they the most gorgeous Coconuts? :-)
Janique wasn't in this version!
Not in the Granada UK TV show 1982. Check at 0:14 Addy, Cheryl & Taryn. :-p
Never disputed that!

the end is Paris 85? innit so of course the georgeous Janique is present
I love both of their movies for Granada tv.
Wonderfull style! Wonderfull sound ! Absolument fabuleux
This is fantastic! Love the funkified rearrangement of Gina Gina. Wish I'd seen them live during their hey day.
Absolutely brilliant entertainment.
Thank you for the post, my favourite musical group.
Pure magic
Nearly 40 years ago. Where’s talent and acts like this now. No wonder we older folk think that modern “music” is shite. Congratulations Simon Cowell.
Unfortunately, the last I heard about Kid Creole was he got sent to prison for killing some homeless guy.
No Diggity
That's Kidd Creole and not Kid Creole August Darnell... different people.
Remember being transfixed by this show. Absolute quality! Thanks for posting. :)
Many thanks for this! It was a favourite in the house I shared (we always skipped the interview using the cable-connected 'remote' control). Saw them live in Sheffield in 1982.
Gotta love a song with the word "onomatopoeia" in it.
Thanks for posting noddy - taken me back to me yuff! Bloody awesome band!
the late Tony Wilson interviewing August Darnell
最高のパフォーマンス
大好き

kid créole mon evasion musicale

Sammy and Shirley Stopford (aka Shirley Ballas) at their peak...brand new cha cha🕺💃
That's a pity you've removed the interview. The most interesting part of it.
Don't take my COCONUTS...
Kind of weird that additional dancers are included...Kid and the Coconuts don't need any help! Super fun music as usual though.
What size is the neck on those pants?
Anyone know the exact date it was first aired on ITV?
Anyone know why Taryn left the Coconuts? Such a cruel thing to do to me! What a loss
Looks like Jimi Hendrix
Lou Bega's uncle
he starts naming chick's names right after I mentioned Lou Bega, LoL
46:45 scared me!
years. Girls were a little unrefined and avante garde at the same time.
Cool show but could’ve done without the artsy dancers. Just focus on my Coconuts!
he's obV not actually directly from the Caribbean basin directly. Terribly generic rendition of an accent
Uhh... The kid is Dominican and Coati is Puerto Rican you dummy!
Bore off! Dominican and Puerto Rican...get your facts before spouting off why don't you?
Only one word for this, FANTASTICO 🤌👍❤ x
Back in the days of real live music ... not mimed shite
