    What were you most impressed with? To be honest, I was super impressed by Maro. Taking into account the thought behind the machine, the UI, the build quality, and the fact the two people running it are actual KIDS, was incredible. What are your thoughts on the five I hit? And don't forget to like and subscribe if you haven't! Helps the channel loads and allows travel like this (which I paid for- zero company assistance getting out there.Thanks to you!)

      Honestly, I was stoked about the Tone. The “sustainability” factor it addresses is a welcomed highlight. I really hope that this leads to an eventual reaction by the industry at large. It was a super cool thing to see.

      Definitely! I am excited about it but the fact that tech isn't really new (same exact unit inside manument) makes it not as impressive to me personally. But an absolutely NECESSARY addition to commercial equipment.

    Great video Lance! Just a couple of adjustments. The EK43 has alway had cast burrs as standard. We have greatly improved our casting process to eliminate warping in recent years to ensure higher quality, what you were referring to.
    The Omnia comes with the standard EK burrs, as in the current EK43. These burrs have been incredibly popular and have been designed to cover a wide range of coffees from amazing espresso to filter.
    The pre 2015 burr was a filter only burr that was also cast. There is many baristas out there who request we re-release this burr quite often. In fact, many have not actually tried it but the online community have created quite a buzz around it making it legendary… Some have even attempted to replicate it.
    Back then we reacted to the fact that the 2015 burrs were great for filter coffee but not a great all rounder due to its narrow application window and therefore did not cover the wider demands of our customers brewing espresso.
    If there is enough demand we could consider remaking the pre 2015 burr. Perhaps we should put it to a public vote to gauge interest? If we get enough demand we could open a preorder and remake it.
    Again great video and was a pleasure to meet you and Hugo at the booth ❤️

    • @LanceHedrick
      @LanceHedrick  Před 7 měsíci +2

      I definitely didn't get that with our conversation! I was under the impression all the burrs were largely tool steel and cast were relegated to lab sweet burrs (which are very well known to be warped often)
      I vote you bring back the pre2015.

    • @LanceHedrick
      @LanceHedrick  Před 7 měsíci +1

So many of the options are coming from completely new companies like Zerno, or their companies (Timemore, MHW-3Bomber) that don’t have experience manufacturing robust electric grinders.

    I understand that you may not see this, but with respect to the tone I was wondering why there is such excitement about these new fast heating (on/off) espresso machines, like the one James Hoffmann reviewed a few weeks ago. I understand the practicality of being able to heat up water in a instant for a shot and the economic benefits this would have in saving energy but surely this technology already has existed with thermoblocks and thermocoils. I was wondering what the big difference is between this new technology that is being developed and the technology that already existed in machines like the BDB (is it the accuracy and PID control??)

If they can truly go no-boiler, and pull a new type of cold esprsso, that's really exciting for not just the industry, but home barista, too! Great video, the Maro seems like a strange value proposition since it's targeted at people who don't know how to make espresso, yet are willing to spend $4500 on an espresso machine but I hope for them those are out there since it seems very well built and thought out. For the mazzer, any idea what the (EU) retail price will be? If the price is right it could be interesting to have a grinder from a company that has EU distributors avoiding the high import taxes (e.g. on Zerno Z1 or Lagom P64)

    • @LanceHedrick
      @LanceHedrick  Před 7 měsíci

      To be fair, it isn't targeted at that demographic. They just wanted to ensure and include it. You'd be surprised how many people start espresso and immediately buy a decent or LM mini. It is geared towards any level with the promised potential of infinite upward mobility.
      As for mazzer, they said 1000 euro in europe so likely 1400 or so in US

    Love the tech in all these machines, but I wish there were more physical buttons instead of touch targets, the last thing I want when I'm groggy and trying to get caffeine in me is to tap at the front of the machine five times because I missed by a millimeter or my hand was wet

      @@LanceHedrick definitely a ‘lateral move’ for mazzer. At first it looks like they’re trying to compete with the EK, or maybe even a fancier competitor to the Timemore sculptor. But given the price (allegedly 1.000€), it seems like a specialty version of the Mazzer mini. A lot of cafes already use Minis for decaf etc, and this would be a more versatile alternative to fill that space.

    lotsa cool new engineering for sure
    i wish the coffee industry stopped using, imo, super yucky spouted portafilters. i can't get over having an espresso made with a spouted portafilter that hasn't been rinsed out under the basket and the spouts. it makes my heart so so sad for all the baked on syrupy coffee under the baskets and in the spouts just having new espresso running over it. not to mention the objectively substantial amount more material and manufacturing costs making spouted portafilters

      I agree re: cleanliness! it does seem to be a relic of the past, though many are die hard lovers of it. I doubt it will be going anywhere anytime soon. maybe just easier to clean iterations, i'd imagine.
