Here's a tip that I do frequently: I brown several pounds of hamburger at a time, portion into 2 cup increments in separate freezer bags, and freeze. Thaw overnight in fridge, or in warm water while chopping other ingredients, and it's ready to go! 2 cups equals about a lb.

@Kathy I don’t eat meat anymore but when I was a child, my mom and every one of her friends used to have what they called ‘Big Batch Chicken Day’ and they’d all bake six chickens and pull apart to freeze. This happened up and down the street and you could smell it halfway across town. They were the type of ladies who would babysit each other’s jar of sourdough starter when somebody went on vacation. Lots of children, work and fun. 💕

I used to do that when I bought hamburger from Walmart. I'd buy a 5 or 10 pound chub, slice it into 1 lb sections, and freeze it in freezer bags.

We are on WW, so we'll use ground turkey, Carb Balance tortillas, Instant Pot pintos (my husband makes them without pork so they are 0 points and DELICIOUS), FF cheddar shreds, avocado (0 pts), and our homemade salsa (0pts). Thanks for the great meal idea! Can't wait to try this!

I have made the cream cheese, chili, cheese mixture 2 ways for 50+ yrs. As a dip, I mix all of it together, even add some velveeta, warm it in a crock & eat warm with fritos. Can top with sour cream & diced tomatoes & jalapeños. As a snack, get small bags of fritos & cut the bags lengthwise. Ladle the dip mixture into the bag over the chips & top with cheese etc. Eat with a spoon. The bags are waterproof so no mess. These are called Pepper Bellies.

And some kind of red sauce as a layer too, like an enchilada sauce maybe. Since we were kids, I know it wasn’t salsa. I’m pretty sure it was a recipe that made the rounds amongst the mom’s in the early 90’s. Probably was featured somewhere 😂

@@FeedingtheByrds the Wet Burrito is a West Michigan/Grand Rapids food! My stepmom brought it to our family out west 😝
You can add other toppings, but I like just the beans and meat folded inside a tortilla- you cover it with enchilada sauce and cheese and then we microwave it to melt the cheese. I’m sure fancier people melt it in the oven!! If I am feeling creative I might throw some black olives and onions on it too. Those Michigan folks will put lettuce and tomato inside the burrito “pre-melt”, but I do not like hot lettuce- so that can be served on the side.

I always have cooked ground beef in 1 lb pkgs and chicken in 3 cup portions frozen in my refrigerator. When either is on sale I purchase as much as I can afford that week without busting the budget. I bring it home and immediately cook it. I season simply with salt and pepper. That way I have about 30 meals from both ground beef and chicken that I can fix in 20 to 30 minutes . I also always have the ingredients for breakfast for dinner and some sort of sausage, green beans or cabbage and potatoes for a 1 pot meal. The sausage last several months in the meat drawer and I save thar meal for when I forget to defrost something.

@Feeding the Byrds I have done this for years. I do not even put the meat away. I put chicken on in the crockpot to cook and the ground beef I put straight in a skillet. If I need more than a lb of ground beef I just pull out 2 packages. The only thing I buy ground beef for that I do not precook are for Burgers, meatloaf and meatballs. Everything else I make I use the precooked beef for. Most of the time I brown it with an onion, salt and pepper. I then can use it for anything. The chicken I place in the crockpot with a cup of water, salt and pepper. I cook on low 4 to 6 hours. I shred it and freeze in freezer bags. When time to use I just defrost enough to get it out of the freezer bag. It then will finish defrosting and reheating in what dish I am fixing.

I definitely think you could do this on a pie plate!

Often the cheapest way to buy hamburger is in a pkg. of 3 or 5 lb. big packages. I asked the butcher if I could just buy 3 separate pounds for the same price. No, he said, but just bring me one of those large bulk packages, & I will separate it for you! So I got 3 1-lb. packages, ready to freeze!

Isn't chili without beans just ground beef and tomatoes? I can't imagine eating chili without beans! That just isn't right Texans! :)

😆😂 I do like beans in my chili but I can also see how certain recipes are just better with a bean-less chili!

I’m from Texas the ladies in San Antonio that started it never used beans to prevent taking away from the beef taste. Beans began during the depression to stretch the mean all and make it able to feed everyone.

What is at the end of your wooden spatula? I haven’t seen wooden utensils like this. I don’t like using wooden utensils but this is interesting, I feel wooden are clunky and just moves food around and don’t turn food over easily. I like the look of yours though.

I usually have lots of staple dinners on hand but my chicken chili is one I always have for a meal that I can do in instant pot or crockpot.
My 10 year old doesn’t like cilantro either. However, if it’s cooked in a dish it doesn’t bother her too much. It is something she won’t add when I have it prepped as a topping for something. The rest of the family likes it. 6 out of 7.
