This is one of my favorite songs to sing with the banjo along with "I'm Dying Mother" and "Death and the Lady". Something I love about this style is how different the same song can sound between players. Keep up the great playing! Cheers!

What kind of strings are those and how do they sound so good when tuned that deep?

These are Aquila nylgut strings. They generally sound good even when slightly undertensioned. The nature of the gourd body also amplifies the lower tones well.
