    I started smoking at 15, smoked for 45 years, only quit one time, cold turkey, a year and a half ago. No vape, patch, gum, nothing. Just will power which I never thought I had. I've conquered smoking one craving at a time. You can do it too. Be the master of your own destiny!

    I smoked from the time I was 12 until I was about 60. then one day I accidently ran into your videos and watched them from the morning till the afternoon. By the afternoon I had decided to quit and I quit "COLD TURKEY". It was hard and it actually took me months to start feeling normal, but it was the best thing I ever did, and still can't believe I did it. I remember I just decided that no matter how I felt I was just not going to have that next smoke. That was now 5 years ago and I turned 65 today. I no longer have a constant cough, I've had maybe one cold I just rarely get sick. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for these videos Joel, you literally saved my life. Still hard to believe I did it, but I did it due to YOUR VIDEOS. God bless you! AND by the way I had tried to quit a number of times and failed. Also i never had a good by smoke just quit that day I watched your videos.

      @joejoe7212 I know this is old but to anyone seeing this, there's no such thing as "just one smoke". One turns to two and two turns to three, just the same as a recovering alcoholic can't just have "one shot of vodka". It doesn't just break your streak it shoots you straight back to square one

    I quit smoking and drinking. And it only took me 10 seconds to do it. I just said enough with this crap. Sixteen years have passed and I never thought about booze or butts ever again. It just takes will power that is in all of us. Just quit.

    This is how I quit a pack a day habit of red 100s. I quit smoking instantly but my success was because I also quit coffee at the same time . I do not drink anything but water. I have been off both for 3 years and 14 days. I honestly had extremely mild withdrawals by day 3 I only had a craving or so once or twice a day for 15 minutes or so looking back my success was because I quit caffeine as well. I personally didn't have any headaches I looked at the process as my lungs healing . When I gained momentum I never looked back . I lost weight didn't gain it my energy increased my sleep improved . Best decision I have ever made . So glad I don't have to wake up in the night and have a smoke or have to drink a pot of coffee every morning my life improved immediately after day 2 you can do it throw away all your cigarettes/ coffee tea and just start do gods will not yours and you can quit easily and effortlessly . Smoking is a curse

    Willpower is so underrated.
    I smoked 20 a day for 9 years, then one day I decided enough was enough. (Cold turkey)
    For me the Eureka moment was simply deciding I REALLY didn't want to smoke anymore.
    Anyone can do it..just make the decision and be your own master. The thought of being a slave to something so detrimental both financially and physically sickens me now.

    I quit cold turkey after smoking for 40 years. I was about 14 yrs old when I started and I am months short of my 54th birthday. The first days I am not going to lie to you were very rough I was not sure if I would make it. But I put my mind to it and decided I was in control and made it past the 2 weeks mark and have been smoke free ever since. I tried to quit before used patches , nicotine gum, and all kinds of crazy stuff. Finally I just decided to use my mind and that is what worked best. I know people say this and it is true " If I can do this so can you". Well that is the truth and man do I feel better my lungs don't hurt anymore,my chronic cough went away, blood pressure is normal and wow I have saved so much money!

  • @painternow

    It was Joel Spitzer's videos that helped me quit over 6 years ago. I am SO GRATEFUL. This is the thinking person's quit. Watch as many as you can. I coupled these with an online quitting forum, for daily support. I was a big smoker. It was the hardest thing I've ever done. My body and mind tried so hard to rebel. But it simply can to a commitment to never take a another puff. These videos really helped me understand what was going on with the cravings. Nothing can help with the suffering through withdrawal. It tough, very tough. But SO worth it! I have long ago thrown away my list of reasons to quit. That list was very helpful, too. But now, I just enjoy living without all the smell, hassles, expense and health worries. And I actually LESS anxiety. Keep watching, and learning. And then, make a commitment to never take another puff.

    I quit cold turkey 50 weeks ago. I went from a 40+ a day habit to zero overnight. It's a much more intense withdrawal episode but I GUARANTEE YOU - you'll suffer for less time than someone using NRT. Patches, Gum, vapes etc - all these do is sustain the nicotine addiction. Be human, be strong, say NO. You'll get through like all of us.

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  Před 7 lety +4

      Congratulations on 50 weeks. I want to point out that not everyone who quits smoking has an intense withdrawal. The videos Every quit is different czcams.com/video/fYHkaGt-YhE/video.html and What was nicotine withdrawal really czcams.com/video/WbEoMEpmMX4/video.html like address this issue. One other video I want to highlight is Are you stronger than your cigarettes?. czcams.com/video/uxLxDuTOCT0/video.html
      Staying smart is much more important than staying strong when it comes to staying free from nicotine.

    • @adamcurrie1157
      @adamcurrie1157 Před 7 lety +2

      Joel Spitzer I disagree. in fact to my knowledge I don't know of a single friend of mine who has given up using NRT. interestingly on the other hand I can think of multiple friends who've successfully cessated from smoking by use of willpower alone. it's not reflective of the whole world, but it's a pretty good barometer

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  Před 7 lety

      I was not disagreeing that cold turkey was not the preferable method of quitting. Your experience of having a hard time finding successful quitters who used NRT is quite common. I was referring to the idea the idea that cold turkey quitters were destined to have more intense withdrawal. There are many cold turkey quitters who have minimal withdrawal. Check out the video czcams.com/video/lUSJLDzkIhs/video.html and its attached resources. Congratulations on your 14 months quit Judith. I want to make sure that you actually watched the video here and are not responding just to its title. The page whyquit.com/joels-videos/you-should-retitle-that-video/ explains how this specific video has a unique situation where people think the title is saying that "I" and telling people not to quit cold turkey when in fact I am saying the opposite.
      Here are a few other pages that relate to topics you raised here in your response:

They are materials to help people to stay off once they have quit. Sometimes when people get to the point where you are at where cigarettes are no longer of any interest they can lose sight to the fact that they still need to remain vigilant in remembering the grip that nicotine once had on them and will take on them again if they ever make the tragic mistake of administering nicotine again via any source. Give the relapse prevention materials a look. Once again, congratulations on your quit.

    It is now August 18, 2016. I quite smoking on Dec. 15 2014 and have NOT had a cigarette since. The first 4 days after I quite ( for me was the easiest ). I ran out of cigarettes once before I decided to quite and lasted 4 days before buying a carton. So I knew I could go 4 days and still be alright. On Dec. 15th 2014 I stopped completely with no intensions of going back. My younger sister was using one of those E- cigarettes and wanted me to try it. I told her NO, my plan was to stop tobacco completely and not go to something different just so I could give that up as well. I can HONESTLY say I AM SMOKE FREE and don't miss it a bit. My sisters have come over to visit with me and now I'm hearing things like " when we walk into your home, it doesn't smell like a giant ash tray." " when you come over to our houses, your clothes don't smell like smoke." Even my Dr. was SHOCKED when I told him I quite smoking. I did something he has been trying to do for years with no success.

      I have told my Dr. that I quite smoking. He looked at me over his glasses and said that he was proud of me for quitting and doing it " cold turkey." I then asked him about those e-cigarettes and just how safe they were or were they a waste of time . He told me the FDA HAS NOT approved them at all. After using it for awhile, there is a large concern one could develop " vapor Lung." I told my sister what my Dr. said and at that time it went in one ear and out the other. A few weeks later we got to talking about it again and this time she told me she was going to quite altogether even tho in her cupboard she still had her vapor juice. I told her use the juice up first and then stop. Trying tto stop knowing her fix was just inside her cupboard was pointless. When her juice ran out, she stopped refilling. It was about a year that she still had to hold that empty e-cigarette between her fingers. As of today, the e-cigarette is completely gone.

    You’re absolutely right Joel. I went to the doctors Jan 2019. My weight went drastically up, my doc was telling me my blood pressure is high and I changed my eating habits and stopped smoking since I left that office. It’s been a month since I quit. This is the longest I went without smoking since I started 15 years ago. It’s because of my faith and that doctor visit that got me through. I say to those trying to find a reason, you’ll find a reason that’ll hit home for you. But when you’ll find it you’ll realize it works just for you.

    Hello. Thank you Joel for these videos. I am on 3 weeks this time and these videos really help with support. I quit cold turkey this time and I really dealt with the physical withdrawal symptoms this time. Every time I have quit in the past whether it be one of the two day quits, two weeks, two months, or even 13 years, I always used the gum. I never want to go through this again so I don't plan on ever having to quit again. However, if I ever do quit again I would use the gum for a week or two. Now that I have tried both ways, I think the gum really does take the edge off and when I used it I don't think I had any physical withdrawal symptoms, just mental. I had no problem giving up the gum either. So that's my thought and experience on cold turkey vs gum. thanks again. Dawn

      Hello Ronnie:
      Here are a few links to resource pages addressing the issue of having to quit at a time where you are minimizing stress or shutting yourself away during the quitting process. Some people don't have the luxury of doing this and others may think they have set up such a time only to have some unexpected situation arise that messes up those plans. I want people to know that even if things like this occur they can still sustain their quits.

    I just quit four days ago. No preparation but I had a realization that my inflammation in my wrists coincided with me starting to smoke every day six months ago. So I read that nicotine and inflammation is somehow linked to my problem. So I read it takes three days to get nicotine out of my body. So I said I'm not smoking for three days. Now it is four days. My wrists feel soooo much better for the first time in months. So now I can't smoke anymore or my wrists will hurt again and I'll stink also. So now I'm free from smoking and it was technically very easy. I just stopped on a dime but the realizations I mentioned made it much easier to do. Before I didn't see the benefit. Now I've experienced the havoc nicotine can reap.

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  Před 4 lety

      Hello Michael:
      What may come to a surprise to many people is that most smokers who successfully quit do so without preparation. The pages whyquit.com/joels-videos/setting-quit-dates/ and whyquit.com/joels-videos/how-did-the-former-smokers-you-know-quit-smoking/ address this issue. Also, the page I referred you to yesterday of whyquit.com/joels-videos/does-smoking-cause-my-headaches/ addresses how while smoking doesn't cause all things that smokers may get while smoking, it may be responsible for causing or exacerbating many problems that may only be realized when a person quits. One thing though is that you don't want your reason for staying off to be hinged on just one issue. See the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/make-a-list-of-why-you-want-to-quit/. In the event that something else ever causes a return of the one symptom, locking into only one issue can cause you to instantly lose your reason for having stopped and possibly threaten your quit. The circumstance that causes the symptom may have only caused the problem for a day or two--but if you were to relapse and smoking was the reason for the chronic situation you had been experience, you may have then set up a return of a long-term if not lifetime problem all the while thinking smoking wasn't responsible. Not only could this set you up for the suffering that the one problem caused, but again facing all of the risks and problems that accompanies being a smoker.

    I tried every nicotine replacement there is. I tried cutting down. I tried everything over a period of several years. I've found that nicotine replacement just prolongs your suffering. Cold turkey is really the ONLY way to quit. All else is just a Band-Aid. I quit cold turkey and it took only a couple tries and now I am tobacco free and have been for 5 years. That's after smoking or dipping for over 30 years. And every real Dr. I've spoken to agrees. Cold turkey is the only way.

    Joe; For some people cold turkey works. Did for me. When I was 18, I just always felt after smoking like I was getting a cold. I threw the cigs out the car window and didn't look back. To me, even a little bit of smoking is a lure back in. Nicotine is just that addictive of a substance. Once you stop, and give it some time, you don't long for it anymore. But you have to stop altogether.

    My biggest challenge is not so many cravings, but I have an extremely hard time staying asleep, not necessarily falling asleep, although I'll have these vivid dreams and almost not even be full asleep, like I'm still somewhat conscious while I'm dreaming. But in most cases, I can't seem to sleep more than 1-2 hours at a time, and I'll then stay up because I feel wide awake after having some vivid nightmare in that time period. It always feels like very unfinished sleep almost like I never actually fell asleep. Weird. I can only fall asleep for 3-5 hours at a time if I really deprive myself for the whole day and I seem to be falling asleep better during the day, rather than night. I definitely could go grab one and smoke it down and feel amazing and keep telling myself one won't hurt, but then I'll tell myself that I'll be pissed after the fact and the whole 4-5 days of agony was worth nothing.

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  Před 7 lety

      Smoking did not cause everything. It causes a whole lot of things though and many things that it does not cause, it makes worse. On the same token, quitting does not cause everything. Quitting is usually accompanied with many repairs, but there are also some adjustments (see Medication adjustments) that go on that may need a partnership with your physicians to get worked out.
      My general rule of advice is whatever happens the first few days of a quit, whether it is physical or psychological reactions, blame it on not smoking. It is probably the cause of most early quit reactions. If it is a symptom to a condition that could be life threatening, such as severe chest pains or signs or symptoms of a stroke-contact your doctor immediately. While it is probably nothing and just a side effect of quitting, in the long shot that it is something else coincidentally happening the week you are quitting, you need to get it checked out.
      Things happening weeks, months, years or decades after your quits though should not ever be assumed to be a quit smoking reaction. It is life going on without smoking. Some of these things may trigger smoking thoughts-especially if they are similar to conditions you did have in the past when you were a smoker. The situation now is a first time experience with a prior feeling where smoking was integrates thus creating smoking thoughts. But even in this case, the condition is creating a smoking thought, it is not that your smoking memories or your smoking past is creating the condition.
      Life goes on without smoking. It is likely to go on longer and it is likely that you will be healthier at each and every stage than you would have been if you had continued smoking. Your life will continue to stay better and likely last long longer as long as you always remember to never take another puff!Joel

      If you're still using nicotine I can give you advice that may help getting off. When you're using nicotine, you're an addict to it. The reason chewing gum, smoking, or vaping feels enjoyable, is because when you do this, you are no longer in withdrawal. You associate not being in withdrawal as enjoyment because being in withdrawal feels awful.
      It takes about 3-4 days for your PHYSICAL addiction to nicotine to end. If you quit using nicotine for this amount of time, you will no longer be in withdrawal. You may have other symptoms as your body adjusts to having no nicotine, but you will no longer be in withdrawal after 3-4 days
      This is basically Allan Car's advice. You don't *really* enjoy smoking, what you enjoy is no longer being in withdrawal. It doesn't take that much time to get through it. Quit on Thursday night, go to work on Friday, seclude yourself on the weekend because you may be very irritable, and by Monday, you'll be OK. You may still have slight desires to use some sort of nicotine, but you won't be going crazy if you don't.
      After a few weeks, you will barely remember you ever smoked.
      However, if you use any nicotine again, expect to be wanting nicotine again in 1 hour, and it again takes about 3 days to be fully clear again. You can't ever use nicotine again.

    After almost 25 years of smoking, I am getting tired of it and I believe that I will get to the breaking point in month or two, when that moment comes I will quit for sure. Then I will get back here to confirm that "cold turkey" is the only successful way. My lungs are clear, I went to check and, to my surprise, doctor asked me "Do you smoke?". I expected something like "Man, you have some lungs left in your tar depository", but it turns out that lungs are actually clear. So, I was diagnosed with asthma, and I still smoke, much less than before but still... And I'm getting angry, hoping that I will hit that breaking point soon.

    I have started an anti-smoking campaign in my hometown, Rabwah, Pakistan. Pakistan is building at least three new cancer hospitals. I find your videos very useful, but I think you should change this one's title because it could mislead someone. Thanks, God bless you.

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  Před 6 lety

      Hello Anya Ali. Thanks for your feedback. I am actually going to try to make a video today talking about the real importance of why this video was named as it was. One think I should point out is that if you look at my video titles, you will see a significant number of them with quotation marks around them, as in this one "Whatever you do, don't quit cold turkey". Whenever you see these quotes around a title it means that the title is quoting a topic from another person or group of peoples point of view and not my own. Understanding this can help to avoid some confusion.
      On a more important topic, I agree that helping people to quit smoking or better yet, helping to get young people not to start is a much better approach to saving the health and life of people rather than having to treat conditions that may or may not be treatable.
      My page whyquit.com/joels-videos/my-work-in-the-field-of-smoking-prevention-and-cessation/ talks about how I've spent the last 47 years trying to help people to understand this. I'm thrilled now that with the Internet now with resources like this CZcams channel that I can share this message with people from all over the world.
      I wish you well in your endeavors with your campaign. I hope you find my resources helpful in assisting people to never start smoking or if they already do smoke, in understanding the importance of quitting, how to quit and then in making a personal commitment to never take another puff.
      Joel

      Thanks for wishing me well with my campaign. Of course I find your resources very useful. What I am doing is, I am Whatsapping as many people as I can .jpegs with a little info added to them about the dangers of tobacco. I do this once or twice a day. The second one gives a quick overview. Basically though, the original definition of cold turkey quitting is to simply abruptly to stop smoking without using any quitting aids and not by gradual reduction. The videos delve into the fact that many people have started to work at redefining the term making it harder to know exactly what cold turkey may mean depending on who is using it. Here is a short article I wrote in 1984 discussing the method: whyquit.com/joel/Joel_03_02_cold_turkey.html

      Congratulations on your 22 year quit Geoffrey. Yes 22 years ago the way most people successfully quit smoking was by going cold turkey. Same is true today. Yet people have always been told that it was the hardest way and most likely to fail method and the pursuit of money is often the reason why that message is being delivered. Although it is important to point out, that many people giving the advice are not doing it for financial gain but rather because they believe the message. Joel, I don't buy into the "Pharmaceutical companies are evil" dogma. I believe the reason why they come up with these results is because their subjects aren't really willing to lay off smoking to begin with. Cold Turkey requires will power, everyone knows it. The "it takes will power to quit smoking is a myth" myth is a myth. It does take will power. And, just like anything else, it can be learned.

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  Před 7 lety +1

      Here is a section from a Mission Statement I wrote back in the early 2000s from one of my online support groups:
      "We are hostile to no one, not even to the tobacco industry or pharmaceutical companies who have different agendas than ours. They exist because they want you to use their products. We exist because you want to stop using them. We are not here to try to make anyone stop using their products either. We are here to help people stop using nicotine because they have already decided to do so."
      I am not so much bothered by big Pharma's pushing of their products--it is why they exist. I am more bothered by the fact that the scientific and public health communities push their products--for even if your feelings on the topic are accurate that the problem is with the study subjects level of motivation, scientists and health professionals should recognize these inherent biases and not perpetuating the idea that cold turkey should not be a recommended method for quitting smoking.

      I should have added that I stopped smoking 4 months ago. The fact that I smoked for almost 50 years, my doctor told me my lung are destroyed. Still, I hope to breathe a little better than huffing and puffing for the rest of my life.

      Cold turkey is how most people quit smoking 25 years ago. It is also how most people quit smoking 50 years ago. Most importantly, it is how most people successfully quit today.

    • @Buelligan88
      @Buelligan88 Před 7 lety

      No one really wants to hear that these days. Everyone needs a crutch to help them through it - the patch, gum, pills. I've never actually seen anyone successfully quit this way. They'll stop smoking for a year or two, but they always start again. Now a lot of smokers are turning to vaping nicotine, something that I think may be harder to quit than tobacco products.

      Actually, if you really generally desire to quit smoking you should just quit smoking. As far as for setting a quit date first--check out this video: Setting quit dates czcams.com/video/HYgSh3zJAF0/video.html

      Here is a page that discusses various issues that are involved with breaking free from nicotine while still using cannabis:
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/herbal-and-marijuana-cigarette-issues/
      Here is one section of that page that is especially important:
      One additional side note here.
      "Many people mix marijuana with tobacco. If a marijuana cigarette is blended with tobacco then it will indeed induce a relapse to nicotine dependency. Just an added note of caution that you need not concern yourself with if you do decide to take the route that as far as for any burning plant product that you are committing to never take another puff!"

      Shane, although easy to misconstrue the title to this video, the title is a spoof sharing what pharma and friends are telling quitters. This video (and Joel's entire collection of videos) actually encourage abrupt nicotine cessation or cold turkey.
